The Sculpture Fields at Montague Park in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Has only been open about a year at the time of this filming. Plans are to add dozens more sculptures in the near future. Dump trucks were hauling in more fill dirt even as this video was being shot. This is a brownfield site. Donated to the City of Chattanooga by the Montague family around a century ago, the city used it as some sort of dump.
Sculpture Field Coming to Chattanooga: One In%
What was once waste land, Will soon be the home of sculptures from around the world.
It is the future sight of The Sculpture Fields at Montague Park.
When people come into this park. They're going to see something they've never seen before, said John Henry, a sculptor, and founder of the Sculpture Field. There will be art and sculptures from all over the world. And lots of different points of view about how art is made.
John Henry is a world renowned sculptor, his work can be seen in Europe, Asia and across the United States.
His art, is created in Chattanooga.
He spearheaded the community effort to fill this once empty piece of earth into an international art destination by filling it with works from artists like Peter Lundberg.
Peter is from Vermont. His sculptures are on 4 continents.
Right now, he is working on creating a piece that will forever be in the sculpture fields.
Cultural activities are the things people remember, so when they come to Chattanooga and see the sculptures from around the world. It will be very important, said Lundberg.
His piece is made from three materials, Chattanooga earth, cast concrete and steel.
The finished piece is a tribute to the five service members killed in the Chattanooga shooting off Amnicola Highway July 16th.
There's nothing you can do to bring those people back. But we want to honor them in the best way we can. I'm trying to make the best sculpture I can, he said.
The sculpture will be erected on September 1st at 9:00am. You are invited to go watch.
The garden will be free and open to the public every weekend in November, and there will be a grand opening in the spring of 2016.
There will be more than 70 pieces of art in the collection once the park is complete.
