I walk through the Hudson Yards complex and The Shops at Hudson Yards Shopping Mall on opening day. I was not able to climb The Vessel artistic sculpture as I did not have tickets reserved.

Hudson Yards is a real estate development in the Chelsea and Hudson Yards neighborhoods of Manhattan, New York City. It is the largest private real estate development in the United States by square footage, and has been compared to Roppongi Hills, a Japanese development similar in scale and use. Upon completion, 13 of the 16 planned structures on the West Side of Midtown South would sit on a platform built over the West Side Yard, a storage yard for Long Island Rail Road trains. The first of its two phases comprises a public green space and eight structures that contain residences, a hotel, office buildings, a mall, and a cultural facility. It opened to the public on March 15, 2019. The second focuses on residential space, along with an office building and a school. Construction has not begun on the second phase.
Related Companies is the primary developer, and Oxford Properties is a major equity partner. Mitsui Fudosan owns a 92.09 percent stake in 55 Hudson Yards, and a 90 percent stake in 50 Hudson Yards. The architectural firm Kohn Pedersen Fox designed the master plan for the site, and architects including Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill, Thomas Heatherwick, Roche-Dinkeloo, and Diller Scofidio + Renfro contributed designs for individual structures. Major office tenants include or will include fashion company Tapestry, consulting firm BCG, and Alphabet subsidiary Sidewalk Labs.
The site of Hudson Yards was initially intended for other developments, most notably in the early 2000s as the site of the West Side Stadium, during the New York City bid for the 2012 Summer Olympics. The plans for Hudson Yards were developed after the failure of the West Side Stadium. Construction began in 2012 with the groundbreaking for 10 Hudson Yards, and the first phase opened on March 15, 2019. Both phases are projected to be complete by 2024. Agreements between various entities including the local government, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), and the state of New York made the development possible.
The special zoning for Hudson Yards (an area roughly bound by 30th Street in the south, 41st Street in the north, 11th Avenue in the west, and Eighth Avenue in the east) further incentivized the building of other large-scale projects. Hudson Yards is adjacent but unrelated to Manhattan West, 3 Hudson Boulevard, and The Spiral.

Vessel (alternately called Hudson Yards Staircase) is a public structure and landmark that was built as part of the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project in Manhattan, New York City. The concept for Vessel was revealed in 2016. Construction started in April 2017. The structure topped out in December 2017 and opened on March 15, 2019.
The elaborate honeycomb-like structure rises 16 stories and consists of 154 flights of stairs, 2,500 steps, and 80 landings that visitors would be able to climb. Designed by the British designer Thomas Heatherwick, Vessel is the main feature of the 5-acre (2.0 ha) Hudson Yards Public Square. It is expected to have a final cost of $200 million.
Vessel is a 16-story structure of connected staircases between the buildings of Hudson Yards, located in the 5-acre (2.0 ha) Hudson Yards Public Square. Designed by Thomas Heatherwick, Vessel has 154 flights, 2,500 steps, and 80 landings that stretch from its 50-foot-wide (15 m) base to its 150-foot-wide (46 m) apex, with the total length of the stairs exceeding 1 mile (1.6 km). The structure also has ramps and elevators to make it compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Stephen Ross, the CEO of Hudson Yards' developer Related Companies, said that The Staircase's unusual shape was intended to make the structure stand out like a 12-month Christmas tree. The copper-clad steps, arranged like a jungle gym and modeled after Indian stepwells,would be able to hold up to 1,000 people at a time. Heatherwick said that he intends for visitors to climb and explore the structure as if it were an actual jungle gym. At the top of the structure, visitors could have views of the Hudson River coastline.
Vessel is being designed in conjunction with the Hudson Yards Public Square, designed by Thomas Woltz from Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects. The attached 5-acre (2 ha) public square has 28,000 plants and 225 trees, located on the platform upon which Hudson Yards is built. The plaza's southern side is slated to have a canopy of trees. The southeast entrance is designed to contain a fountain as well. A 'seasonally expressive' entry garden is meant for the 34th Street–Hudson Yards station's subway entrance at 33rd Street. The plaza is also designed to connect the High Line promenade.
Although Vessel had originally been slated to cost $75 million, the projections were later revised to between $150 and $200 million. Heatherwick attributed the greatly increased price tag to the complexity of building the steel pieces. The pieces of Vessel are being assembled in the commune of Monfalcone in Italy. From there, ships transport the sections of the sculpture to the Hudson River docks.
It was planned that Vessel would be the structure's temporary name during construction, and that a permanent name would be determined later.

The Most Interesting American You've Never Heard Of

So, you may have not heard about Samuel P. Dinsmoor, but his story is about as Americana as it gets. Dinsmoor was born near Coolville, Ohio, on March 8, 1843. His youth abruptly ended after enthusiastically signing up for the Union Army after the Civil War began. Standing at just five-foot five inches, fellow soldiers nicknamed him “Little One.” He later claimed to be involved in 18 big battles during his three years in the war. He spent much of his service as a nurse, likely assisting in amputations and often witnessing horrifying deaths.
Incredibly, Dinsmoor made it through the war with no major injuries. However, just a few days after the war was over, a commander’s horse he was riding threw him off, slicing his head open. Always abstaining from alcohol, he refused to sip liquor as doctors stitched his head up.
He then returned home to Ohio and soon moved west to the Mississippi River, settling on the Illinois side just north of St. Louis. In 1869, he began a brief career as a schoolteacher. During this time, he fell in love with a woman four years older than him named Frances Barlow Journey. They married on August 24, 1870. The two exchanged vows on horseback in a stream bed, and yes, the presiding minister was also on a horse.
After the wedding, Dinsmoor quit teaching to farm, helping run a 341-acre property near the river that Frances had inherited after her first husband died. Frances and Dinsmoor managed one of the highest valued farms in the area. For 18 years, the family grew and lived a peaceful life. Yet, when Dinsmoor was 45 years old, he decided to move the family west to Kansas, leaving their prosperous and comfortable life back in Illinois behind. It’s not clear why he decided to do this, but some speculate it was because of how promoters hyped Kansas up.
By the time Dinsmoor arrived in Lucas, Kansas, his family had grown to five children, although his two stepchildren, now in their mid twenties, stayed behind. As soon as Dinsmoor arrived, he bought a small farm east of Lucas for $800. Unfortunately, the family arrived in Lucas at a time of economic downturn. Kansas farmers struggled, in particular, due to drought, which caused crop failures and major dust storms. By the end of the 1880s, many couldn’t pay back loans due to lower crop production. It’s unknown how badly this widespread depression hurt Dinsmoor, but regardless his family moved to Nebraska just two years after arriving in Lucas.
Dinsmoor later sold insurance for a company based out of Omaha, so perhaps this explains why the family made the move. However, less than one year after living in Nebraska, they lost everything in a house fire. This is probably why they ended up back on their land in Lucas less than one year later.
Back in Lucas, Dinsmoor became heavily involved in the trendy Populist movement. By 1892, Dinsmoor was probably the biggest Populist supporter in Lucas.The local newspaper called him a radical due to his outspoken and sometimes controversial views.
In 1896, Dinsmoor served as a delegate at the Populist national convention in St. Louis. He also held large Populist rallies at his house, sometimes attracting as many as 300 people. That same year, he achieved his first and only elected office, as justice of the peace of Fairview Township.
However, just as the Populist Party began to fade in the late 1890s, so did Dinsmoor’s political ambitions. In 1898, he lost a state representative race, which devastated him. He vowed to never run for public office again after that.
In 1905, at the age of 62, Dinsmoor sold his farm and moved into Lucas, buying land that would later be world famous. Despite not having any experience in architecture or engineering, he built a stone log cabin almost entirely by himself, completing it two years later. But he always had cement, and couldn’t stop creating with it. After he built a cement fence, he built a grape arbor that reaches from the back porch to the road. From there, at the end of the arbor facing the street, he created Adam and Eve, although Adam started out as a scarecrow he messed up.
After Adam and Eve, Dinsmoor began constructing the first of his eventual 29 concrete trees, some as high as 40 feet. Over the next 22 years, Dinsmoor used 130 tons of cement to create over 150 life-sized statues. Today, if these statues were cut up and sold at an auction, they’d likely sell for millions of dollars.

John D. Rockefeller was one of the richest men in the United States when he moved to Manhattan from Clevelend in 1883, buying an existing house at 4 West 54th Street. Despite the Rockefellers' immense wealth, the home was simple: a four-story brownstone built in 1865 that included a two-story carriage house and central garden. When Rockefeller died, the Manhattan home was demolished for the sculpture garden of the Museum of Modern Art.
Although Rockefeller's first New York home is gone, remnants remain, including the carriage house, which is currently listed for sale.
The turn-of-the-century property has been dramatically transformed into a modern loft, says listing agent Tony Oakley of The Corcoran Group.
The current owner bought it about 10 years ago, Oakley said. He renovated everything. He put in the central heat and A/C (and) reinforced the floors and ceilings. Everything you see there, he replaced.
The owner also added on additional floors, reinforcing each level with steel.
While the Columbus Circle carriage house would make a fantastic single-family home, Oakley says the renovation allows for other uses.
If someone wants to make it a restaurant, make it a bar, they can build up. It's ready to build up; it can hold a lot of people.
An open floor plan and 6,352 square feet of space make the property even more ideal.
But what really sets the home apart — especially in Manhattan — is the curb-cut access allowing for a first-floor garage that holds up to seven cars on its solid oak floors.
The rest of the home holds high-end finishes such as marble sinks and Viking appliances, as well as an enormous master suite with gas fireplace. Huge windows reach from the floor to the 16-foot ceiling in several of the rooms.
According to Zillow's mortgage calculator, a monthly payment on the property would be $25,807, assuming a 20 percent down payment on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage.

Ever since I did the worst places to retire I have been asked over and over to do the best places to retire in the United States. Some people consider the nicest place as the best places that’s normally because they have a good amount of money saved up, the rest of us consider the least expensive place as the best. So, we’ll do 2 videos. The first one will be the cheapest city to retire. It will be the cheapest yet decent place to live. I’m not telling anyone to move to Skid Row in LA or Hunts Point in NY. They would be extremely cheap but incredibly dangerous. That would be wrong and I would be filled with guilt thinking someone took my advice or information and moved to some of the nastiest places in the US. Relatively safe and budget-friendly is what we are looking for. Some cities will give you free college courses and breaks on the purchase of a home. So no student loans and a high mortgage at 65.

Rock star Mick Fleetwood joined political and conservation leaders in New York's Central Park to physically -- and morally -- crush the illegal ivory trade.
The co-founder and drummer of Fleetwood Mac helped feed trinkets, statues and into a rock crusher on Thursday (3 August 2017) in Central Park to demonstrate the state's commitment to smashing the illegal ivory trade. The jewelry was crafted from the tusks of at least 100 slaughtered elephants.
This is the beginning of a very fast race that has to be run in order to win the end result, Mick Fleetwood said. The end result would be not a good result if it continues at the rate of knots that it's going and there's not going to be any elephants within, really in a comparatively short amount of time in Africa.
The artifacts placed ceremoniously onto a conveyor belt to be ground into dust included piles of golf-ball-sized Japanese sculptures, called netsuke, intricately carved into monkeys, rabbits and other fanciful designs. Many of the items were beautiful. Some were extremely valuable.
But state environmental officials and Wildlife Conservation Society members, who partnered with Tiffany & Co. for the Ivory Crush of nearly two tons (1.8 metric tons) of ivory, said no price justifies slaughtering elephants for their tusks.
The sale of ivory across international boundaries has been banned since 1990, but the U.S. and many other countries have allowed people to buy and sell ivory domestically, subject to certain regulations that gave smugglers loopholes. Last year, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service instituted a near-total ban on the domestic commercial ivory trade and barred sales across state lines.
Since August 2014, New York law has prohibited the sale, purchase, trade or distribution of anything made from elephant or mammoth ivory or rhinoceros horn, except in limited situations with state approval. Enforcement efforts have focused on New York City, the nation's largest port of entry for illegal wildlife goods, state officials said.
The ivory pieces sent to the crusher included more than $4.5 million worth seized by undercover investigators from Metropolitan Fine Arts & Antiques in New York City in 2015. In pleading guilty last week to illegally selling ivory, the store's owners agreed to donate $100,000 each to the World Wildlife Fund and Wild Tomorrow Fund for their endangered species protection projects.
More than 270 tons (245 metric tons) of ivory have been destroyed by governments and conservation groups in high-profile public events in 22 countries, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society.
Some critics have argued that destroying ivory could drive up black market prices by increasing scarcity, thus encouraging more poaching. Others argue that it's wasteful and that it would be better to sell confiscated ivory to pay for conservation efforts in poor African countries.

David Smith (1906–1965) is arguably America’s greatest sculptor of the 20th century. His art enlarged the vocabulary of sculpture by employing welding and industrial processes and materials, laying the groundwork for the directness of minimalism and the realization that sculpture could be anything the artist desired. Smith’s oeuvre is a logical outgrowth of earlier 20th-century sculptural trends in cubism, constructivism, and surrealism. However, his work also represents a new paradigm for the language of modern sculpture that reflects the dynamic growth and industrial prowess of the United States after the Second World War. Smith’s confrontation with the process of creation broke the rules and expanded the possibilities of his art form. In part two of this lecture, presented at the National Gallery of Art on March 7, 2019, senior lecturer David Gariff explores Smith’s revolutionary art through a discussion of some of his most important and innovative works, including the Agricola, Tanktotem, Sentinel, Zig, Voltri, and Cubi series.

Ford II Family Curator of European Sculpture & Decorative Arts, Detroit Institute of Arts, presents his lecture, The Legacy of William Valentiner in Shaping the Display of European Sculpture in American Museums, 1900–Present on Saturday, May 20, 2017. This lecture is part of the symposium Sculpture Collecting and Display, 1600–2000 presented by the Center for the History of Collecting at The Frick Collection on Friday and Saturday, May 19–20, 2017.
This two-day symposium showcased how approaches to collecting and displaying sculpture have varied and changed over the centuries, from the Kunskammer of late Renaissance princes, to the sculpture galleries of the eighteenth century, to garden sculpture ensembles and, finally to the challenges of displaying sculpture in public museums. Renowned art historian Malcolm Baker offered the keynote address, which was followed by a roster of distinguished speakers from Europe and the United States. The symposium was made possible through the support of the Robert H. Smith Family Foundation.

The Getty Center, in Los Angeles, California, is a campus of the Getty Museum and other programs of the Getty Trust. The $1.3 billion Center opened to the public on December 16, 1997[2] and is well known for its architecture, gardens, and views overlooking Los Angeles. The Center sits atop a hill connected to a visitors' parking garage at the bottom of the hill by a three-car, cable-pulled hovertrain funicular.
Located in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, the Center is one of two locations of the J. Paul Getty Museum and draws 1.3 million visitors annually. (The other location is the Getty Villa in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, California.) The Center branch of the Museum features pre-20th-century European paintings, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, sculpture, and decorative arts; and 19th- and 20th-century American, Asian, and European photographs.[3] In addition, the Museum’s collection at the Center includes outdoor sculpture displayed on terraces and in gardens and the large Central Garden designed by Robert Irwin. Among the artworks on display is the Vincent Van Gogh painting Irises.
Designed by architect Richard Meier, the campus also houses the Getty Research Institute (GRI), the Getty Conservation Institute, the Getty Foundation, and the J. Paul Getty Trust. The Center's design included special provisions to address concerns regarding earthquakes and fires.
Originally, the Getty Museum started in J. Paul Getty's house located in Pacific Palisades in 1954. He expanded the house with a museum wing. In the 1970s, Getty built a replica of an Italian villa on his home's property to better house his collection, which opened in 1974. After Getty's death in 1976, the entire property was turned over to the Getty Trust for museum purposes. However, the collection outgrew the site, which has since been renamed the Getty Villa, and management sought a location more accessible to Los Angeles. The purchase of the land upon which the Center is located, a campus of 24 acres (9.7 ha) on a 110-acre (45 ha) site in the Santa Monica Mountains above Interstate 405, surrounded by 600 acres (240 ha) kept in a natural state, was announced in 1983.[4] The site cost $25 million.[5] The top of the hill is 900 feet (270 m) above sea level, high enough that on a clear day it is possible to see not only the Los Angeles skyline but also the San Bernardino Mountains, and San Gabriel Mountains to the east as well as the Pacific Ocean to the west.[6][7]
