Seven large 'works' of graffiti appeared in seven Russian cities on Tuesday to mark Russian President Vladimir Putin's 62nd birthday.
The graffiti on the facades of apartment buildings spell out the words: Sovereignty, Memory, Arctic, Strength, History, Safety, and Olympics. The first letters of these words (Suveritet, Pamyat', Arktika, Sila, Istoria, Besopasnost, and Olimpiada) also form the word thanks (spasibo) in Russian. Altogether they appeared on walls in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Vladivostok, Irkutsk, Kaliningrad, and Sevastopol.
The youth educational project, Net, organised the art events.

Russia: Stalin's bust unveiled at parking lot amid obstruction from local authorities
A bust of former Soviet leader Joseph Stalin was unveiled at a private parking lot of a business centre in Arkhangelsk on Saturday, after local authorities prohibited the placement of the monument in a public space. The unveiling of the bust was to mark Stalin's 137th birthday, celebrated on Wednesday.
SOT, Alexander Afanasyev, Deputy of the Arkhangelsk city assembly (Russian): We want to go to the city administration, to appeal to the so-called fathers of the city, satisfying all formal requirements in this appeal, and we will appeal to the Arkhangelsk city assembly to give us a worthy place in the city centre [for the monument].
SOT, Alexander Afanasyev, Deputy of the Arkhangelsk city assembly (Russian): It was created by a Moscow art group. This is a creative work, there is no such monument anywhere in the world, on Earth or in the solar system. It's an original work, a single instance, our Northern Arkhangelsk point of view of the historical personality. My favourite city deserves such a monument.

POV: Exploring Kadychan, Russia's abandoned city
Kadychan is an abandoned city in Russia's far east, 720km by road from Magadan. It was built with gulag labour during the 1940s, originally to house workers from the local coal mines, but in the late 90s the mines became unprofitable and residents were offered incentives to move elsewhere. The result is an entire city of apartment buildings, shops, a hospital, streets, parks and squares left to decay.
I had the opportunity to stop off in Kadychan in July 2014 while riding the Kolyma Highway on my motorbike, so I spent a few hours there taking photos. I only had time to look at two buildings; you could spend a week here exploring and still not see it all.
The first building in this video is the hospital basement (I was looking for stairs); the second is the hospital administrative wing, and the third apparently used to be some sort of shop or supermarket. The last segment is the town square with the traditional statue of Lenin (vandalised).
The medical records I looked at were dated 1954, and apparently just left to rot. Someone had used one pile to start a fire.

Ancient Skull Found in Cave Could Rewrite Human History
Ancient human bones, including fragments of a human skull, ribs and finger bone dating back 50,000 years, have been discovered in Pleistocene era layers in Strashnaya Cave by a team of archaeologists working in the Altai Mountains in Siberia. The ancient remains will help scientists to understand the interaction of modern humans, Neanderthals and Denisovans in the Altai territory, according to Professor Andrey Krivoshapkin, head of Archeology and Ethnography at Novosibirsk State University, who announced the finding. We look at the discovery on the Lip News with Margaret Howell and Nik Zecevic.

Timeline of Russian innovation
Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
