California sea lion
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) is a coastal eared seal native to western North America. It is one of six species of sea lion. Its natural habitat ranges from southeast Alaska to central Mexico, including the Gulf of California. Sea lions are sexually dimorphic; males are larger than females, and have a thicker neck, and protruding sagittal crest. They mainly haul-out on sandy or rocky beaches, but they also frequent manmade environments such as marinas and wharves. Sea lions feed on a number of species of fish and squid, and are preyed on by orcas and white sharks.
California sea lions have a polygynous breeding pattern. From May to August, males establish territories and try to attract females with which to mate. Females are free to move in between territories, and are not coerced by males. Mothers nurse their pups in between foraging trips. Sea lions communicate with numerous vocalizations, notably with barks and mother-pup contact calls. Outside their breeding season, sea lions spend much of their time at sea, but they come to shore to molt.
Sea lions are particularly intelligent, can be trained to perform various tasks and display limited fear of humans if accustomed to them. Because of this, California sea lions are a popular choice for public display in zoos, circuses and oceanariums, and are trained by the United States Navy for certain military operations. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the species as Least Concern due to its abundance. Predation by California sea lions on threatened or endangered salmon species at Bonneville Dam has resulted in more than 50 of them being killed by state officials.[2]
Appearance, physiology, and movement
Being sexually dimorphic, California sea lions differ in size, shape, and coloration between the sexes. Males are typically around 2.4 m (7.9 ft) long and weigh up to 350 kg (770 lb), while females are typically around 1.8 m (5.9 ft) and weigh up to 100 kg (220 lb).[4] Females and juveniles have a tawny brown pelage,[4] although they may be temporarily light gray or silver after molting.[8] The pelage of adult males can be anywhere from light brown to black, but is typically dark brown.[4] The face of adult males may also be light tan in some areas. Pups have a black or dark brown pelage at birth.[8] Although the species has a slender build, adult males have robust necks, chests, and shoulders.[8] Adult males also have a protruding crest which gives them a high, domed forehead;[9]it is tufted with white hairs.[4] They also have manes, which are less developed than those of adult male South American and Steller sea lions.[9] Both sexes have long, narrow muzzles.[8]
As an otariid, the California sea lion relies on its foreflippers to propel itself when swimming. This form of aquatic locomotion, along with its streamlined body, effectively reduces dragunderwater. Its foreflipper movement is not continuous; the animal glides in between each stroke.[10] The flexibility of its spine allows the sea lion to bend its neck backwards far enough to reach its hindflippers. This allows the animal to make dorsal turns and maintain a streamlined posture.[11] When moving on land, the sea lion is able to turn its hindflippers forward and walk on all fours. It moves the foreflippers in a transverse, rather than a sagittal, fashion. In addition, it relies on movements of its head and neck more than its hindflippers for terrestrial locomotion.[12] Sea lions may travel at speeds of around 10.8 km/h (6.7 mph),[13] and can dive at depths of 274 m (899 ft) and for up to 9.9 minutes, though most dives are typically 80 m (260 ft) and last less than 3 minutes.[14]
Sea lions have color vision, though it is limited to the blue-green area of the color spectrum. This is likely an adaptation for living in marine coastal habitats.[15] Sea lions have fairly acute underwater hearing, with a hearing range of 0.4–32 kHz.[16] Sea lions rely on their whiskers or vibrissae for touch and detection of vibrations underwater. Compared to the harbor seal, the California sea lion's vibrissae are smoother and less specialized and thus perform less when following hydrodynamic trails, although they still perform well.[17]

Are you ready to travel with us?
Leave everything and wander” is the result of Sara Bertagnolli’s and Luca Sguazzini’s desire to join their own skills and realize a dream: that of traveling, leaving the certainties and securities of everyday life behind.
After university Sara achieved high-level professional goals in the field of management and became the personal assistant to the fashion designer Philipp Plein.
Luca has been traveling a lot since he was a child and the last year he gained notoriety for his participation in the Italian version of “Dancing with the stars”; he has more than 138k followers on Instagram and 50k on Facebook.
They have decided to join forces and to tell a life out of the ordinary on social networks. The plan is to travel through Canada, Alaska and, in a second moment, United States, Messico and South America and to share the trip’s photos and videos on Youtube, Facebook and Instagram, giving to everyone the possibility to experience the “wander-spirit”.
Traveling without temporal or spatial limits will give Sara and Luca the possibility to entangle their story with that of people they will meet on the road and to discover new cultures, visiting also the places which are not famous, the ones which often have the biggest surprises in store.
The start-up budget will be limited in order to demonstrate that – also without great economical resources – everything is possible if you put the work in and involve as many people as possible.

'Unprecedented' Mass Death of Seabirds On US West Coast
undergroundworldnews.com
In the storm debris littering a Washington State shoreline, Bonnie Wood saw something grisly: the mangled bodies of dozens of scraggly young seabirds. In the storm debris littering a Washington State shoreline, Bonnie Wood saw something grisly: the mangled bodies of dozens of scraggly young seabirds. Walking half a mile along the beach at Twin Harbors State Park on Wednesday, Wood spotted more than 130 carcasses of juvenile Cassin’s auklets—the blue-footed, palm-size victims of what is becoming one of the largest mass die-offs of seabirds ever recorded. “It was so distressing,” recalled Wood, a volunteer who patrols Pacific Northwest beaches looking for dead or stranded birds. “They were just everywhere. Every ten yards we’d find another ten bodies of these sweet little things.”
Cassin’s auklets are tiny diving seabirds that look like puffballs. They feed on animal plankton and build their nests by burrowing in the dirt on offshore islands. Their total population, from the Baja Peninsula to Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, is estimated at somewhere between 1 million and 3.5 million. Last year, beginning about Halloween, thousands of juvenile auklets started washing ashore dead from California’s Farallon Islands to Haida Gwaii (also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands) off central British Columbia. Since then the deaths haven’t stopped. Researchers are wondering if the die-off might spread to other birds or even fish.
“This is just massive, massive, unprecedented,” said Julia Parrish, a University of Washington seabird ecologist who oversees the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST), a program that has tracked West Coast seabird deaths for almost 20 years. “We may be talking about 50,000 to 100,000 deaths. So far.” Although there doesn’t appear to be a link to the virus that killed tens of millions of sea stars along the same shores from California to Alaska over the past 18 months, some scientists suspect a factor in both cases may be uncharacteristically warm waters. The U.S. Geological Survey and others have performed animal autopsies, called necropsies, on several of the emaciated Cassin’s auklets.
700 Pound Snake Pulled out of Lake in North Carolina
Giant 700 pound snake caught in lake in Proctor, North Carolina. The giant man eating python was measured at 98 feet long. Police were contacted to see if there have been any recently filed missing person reports as a snake this big could have surely eaten a human.
This giant snake is massive and just gorgeous, but it didn't take long to find out that the STORY behind it... was fake, just another hoax.
While the image is indeed real, I think the size of the giant snake could have been exaggerated due to the camera angle
Nevertheless, this snake is still huge, but where did it come from? The markings on it's skin looks similar to that of a reticulated python native to Southeast Asia. After playing around with a little Google translate, the mystery was finally solved.
This giant python came from Indonesia and after some rough translating, it turns out that it was discovered this last Thanksgiving near the village of Belinyu City. It was found by accident by a group of construction workers who severely injured the reptile while knocking down a large dead tree in which the python was sleeping inside of. The workers put the dying snake out of it's misery and buried it.
It's sad to see such an incredible animal killed, especially one that could have been a new world record size. I wish there were more pictures so we could get a better idea of just how large it was.
I really enjoyed learning about this amazing snake, if you guys have any cool wildlife stories or interesting animals that you think I might enjoy, tell me about it on Facebook

Petting Zoo Animals Living Desert Zoo And Gardens Palm Desert CA California
The Living Desert was established in 1970 by several trustees of the Palm Springs Desert Museum who foresaw the impact that resort development would have on their local desert ecosystem. This foresight led to an interpretive nature trail and preserve in Palm Desert. Among the trustees was Philip L. Boyd who also founded the Riverside campus of the University of California and the Deep Canyon Research Station in Palm Desert. Among his first tasks was to hire a resident naturalist. This person turned out to be a young woman with energy, intelligence and ambition, as well as experience as a zoo keeper and park ranger, plus graduate work in wildlife biology.
Karen Sausman was President and CEO of The Living Desert for forty years and has recently retired. The vision that built The Living Desert and the love of the desert shared by Phillip Boyd, Karen Sausman, our members, volunteers, staff, trustees, and friends, will be carried forward by our new President and CEO, Allen Monroe.
For almost four decades The Living Desert has been engaged in the important work of preserving, conserving and interpreting the desert and all its varied plant and animal life. Even as we take immense pride in our accomplishments over the last forty years, we remain as dedicated as ever to the goals that initially inspired us when we first began operations in March of 1970.

#63 Hail Columbia! - Boaz Power TV
____ ____(February 3, 2003)
The tragedy of the space shuttle Columbia, as it disintegrated in the sky above Texas, brings home the fact that exploring new worlds takes courage, great courage. As a U.S. citizen, who was born in Israel, I was shocked by this event in which six Americans and one Israeli gave their lives doing something in which they believed passionately. They are all heroes.
Courage is something we all have. Some express it more dramatically. Id like to take you back 88 years to share one particular story of courage in the name of exploration.
His name was Sir Ernest Shackleton. At the age of forty, on an August day in 1914, he launched an independent voyage to make an 1,800-mile crossing of Antarctica on foot. This was considered at the time the last great expedition left on earth.
This incredible adventure turned into Sir Ernest Shackletons greatest failure. Its detailed in a fascinating book entitled Shackletons Way Leadership Lessons from the Great Antarctic Explorer, by Margot Morrell and Stephanie Capparell. A friend named Tyler gave the book to me.
According to the book, He lost his ship before even touching Antarctica. But he reached a new pinnacle in leadership when he successfully led all the members of his crew to safety after a harrowing two-year fight for their lives.
So, as the story goes, when the ship got stuck in the polar ice, The men were stranded on an ice floe more than twelve hundred miles from the farthest outposts of civilization. Whenever it seemed the situation couldnt possibly get worse, it did. The pack ice precariously dragged the ship north for ten months.
What happened next was terrifying. Then, the Endurance was crushed and the men were forced to camp on the ice. They watched in horror one month later as their vessel sank to the bottom of the sea. No one knew anything had happened to them. All they had to rely on were three rickety lifeboats salvaged from the ship. Shackleton allowed each crew member to carry only a few items necessary for survival. The first things tossed: gold coins and a Bible; saved were personal diaries and a banjo.
Continuing to quote from this fascinating book: When the weather was its most brutal, the men endured temperatures that were so low they could hear the water freeze. The bitter cold froze their garments solid and burned their hands and feet. They slept in tents so flimsy they could see the moon through them. They spent nearly four months in the frigid darkness of the long polar night. When the Antarctic summer finally brought warmer temperatures and the promise of some relief, the men awoke every morning in cold puddles of water as their body heat melted the icy floor of their tents. They subsided on a diet of mostly penguin, seal, and sometimes dog, fare that left them feeling weak and blubbery.
Eventually, when the ice began shattering beneath them, the men took to their three small lifeboats. After more than four months of mind-numbing boredom, they suddenly were pitched into an intense battle for survival that brought them to the limits of human capabilities. They fought the sea for nearly a week, making their way to land. They were cold, hungry, exhausted, and so thirsty their tongues swelled in their mouths. Whey they finally reached Elephant Island, they found it a stinking spit of land constantly ravaged by storms. Most of the crew spent the last months of their ordeal huddled under two overturned lifeboats.
As the book continues, the leader of the expedition was relentless in his courage and determination: In the end, Shackleton took five men and sailed eight hundred miles in a lifeboat over tumultuous seas to reach the inhabited islands of South Georgia in the remote South Atlantic. When by some miracle they made their destination, they found they had to cross a nearly impassable frozen mountain range to reach civilization: a whaling station. The whalers, who had seen so much in their own hard lives, were in awe of the invincibility of the men, horribly ravaged by the elements. Immediately, Shackleton turned around and led an effort to rescue the rest of the crew on Elephant Island. Amazingly, every single one had survived.
According to Napoleon, a leader is a dealer in hope. Shackleton knew how to keep hope in plentiful supply. When it was preposterous to think they could get out alive, he convinced his men that only a fool would say they wouldnt.

GOOD MORNING AMERICA'S HOMEPAGE:
500 Marines Were Facing Certain Death – to Save Them This Coastguard Made the Ultimate Sacrifice
In 1942, World War II was ranging around the world. The Pacific Island of Guadalcanal was a particularly hot spot. It was where the Japanese and the American soldiers were engaged in a fierce firefight. There were about 500 United States Marines trapped on the peninsula by the Japanese infantry. If a successful rescue mission were not put into place immediately, they every Marine on the island would die. Fortunately, a man from the U.S. Coast Guard had a plan, and he was sure that it would work.
The man with the plan was Douglas Albert Munro. He was born in Vancouver, British Columbia in October 1919. His father, James was an electrician from California and his mother, Edith, was from Liverpool. He was still a baby when his parents moved the family to Washington State in 1922.
For most of his childhood, Douglas lived in a small town called South Cle Elum. After graduating from high school, he went to the Central Washington College of Education. He was only there for a year before deciding to move to the next phase in his life.
Douglas decided that he wanted to enlist with the United States Coast Guard. His father was a Captain in the Coast Guard Reserve, which is what helped influence his decision. Douglas was known as the youthful Doug, and he was a member of the Cle Elum Drum and Bugle Corps. He took on the position of march leader, which was an early sign of his extensive leadership qualities. Doug told his older sister, Pat, that he wanted to join the Coast Guard because he felt a responsibility to rescue people. When Doug tried to enlist, he found out that he didn't meet the minimum weight requirement for recruits. This meant that he had to eat and eat to reach the goal weight. Finally, he did.
When Doug's training was over, he volunteered to serve on a cutter called, the Spencer. He served on that ship until 1941. That was the year that everything changed for Americans. It was the year that Pearl Harbor was bombed. The United States was not going to war with Japan and other Axis nations. During this time, Douglas had climbed the ranks to the signalman third class. It was his job to man the transport vessels. He also served beside sailors in the U.S. Navy. Because signalmen were in demand, Doug was sent to the Hunter Liggett in June 1941.
The USS Hunter Liggett was a cargo ship. The War Department converted it and brought it back to service in 1939. In 1941, they handed it off to the Navy. Its role in the war an attack transport vessel. In April 1941, it left New York for the Pacific.
Doug's ship held 35 landing vessels called Higgins boats. It also contained two amphibious crafts that could transport tanks to the shore. Since the Japanese were building an airfield in the Pacific Island of Guadalcanal, they had to be stopped. This would give them the upper hand over the Americans.
The Coast Guard had skills that were quite valuable to the Navy and Marine Corps. They were able to handle small crafts under challenging situations. They could easily take the landing crafts to the island where they were needed the most.
Doug was given his mission on September 27th, just a few weeks before his 23rd birthday. He had to transport three companies of Marines. The Marines were trapped on a ridge by the Japanese, and they wrote the word, Help in large letters. A pilot flying by saw the SOS message. It was up to Doug to get the craft back to the island to save the Marines.
Doug and the craft were caught in hostile fire, but he managed to get every man off the beach. Even the 25 who were wounded were saved. Doug was the hero. Sadly, the Japanese were shooting at the craft, and Doug was hit. With his last breath, he asked, Did we get them off? When the Marine told him yes, he smiled, and he died. For his bravery, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. He is the only member of the Coast Guard ever to be given this award. 500 Marines Were Facing Certain Death – So To Save Them This Coastguard Made The Ultimate Sacrifice. Doug gave up his life to save the lives of the 500 Marines who were stranded on the island. He is the true definition of a hero.
