Veterans Memorial Bridge (Port Arthur, TX) westbound [2017 Special Edition]
The first cable-stayed bridge in Texas was this structure built from 1988-91. The longest span is 640 ft and it spans just shy of two miles in total across the Neches River near the busy port city of Port Arthur on the Gulf of Mexico.
NOTE: Due to construction that closed the westbound Rainbow Bridge, the adjacent Veterans Bridge (which normally carries only eastbound traffic) was reconfigured to carry two-way traffic - that configuration is presented in this video.
Port of Port Arthur, Texas
Less than two hours from sea to transit, North America's ultimate direct transfer facility positioned on the Gulf of Mexico to competitively handle any type of commodity.
The ultimate direct transfer facility for international shipping. The Port of Port Arthur completed in the year 2000 an expansion that included all the operating features demanded by the
maritime industry.
The forest products industry wanted and got the finest transit shed to protect newsprint, linerboard, woodpulp, paperboard, plywood and lumber. To give them what they wanted, we not only duplicated the superior quality of our existing shed - we added extra large hanger type doors (36 ft. wide X 24 ft. high); state of the art lighting for 'round-the-clock safe traffic; an enclosed rail and truck apron for all-weather operations; and a storm water drain system throughout the apron dock that includes 36 ft. X 12 ft. door gratings.
The metals industry wanted more open storage and rail accommodations. What they got was an extension of the existing 50 car dockside capacity to150 rail cars for direct transfer; and an asphalt surfaced open storage up to 18 acres.
Need RoRo capability? You've got it - 80 ft. wide with direct rail transfer if needed. When you are tallying up all our assets, remember to include high security that is built into the system that makes the Port of Port Arthur the ultimate direct transfer facility and finest forest products transit terminal in North America.

New Port Arthur City Manager shares his vision
PORT ARTHUR - The New Port Arthur City Manager has completed his first day on the job and he has a large 'to do' list. Floyd Johnson has 25 years of experience in city and county government. He comes to Port Arthur after serving as the city manager of Fort Lauderdale, Florida for 12 years. The people here in Port Arthur are very friendly, said Johnson.Johnson says that's important in getting the city to work together for the common good. The key is not just one person or one entity. It's going to take a combined effort of the citizens, industry, government and the Chamber of Commerce, said Johnson. Johnson has a quarter century of experience in city and county government, most recently in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he spent 12 years as City Manager. He realizes when a community is near the water it must take advantage. Pleasure Island, I just happen to fall in love with. I believe it's a diamond in the rough just waiting to be fully realized as an asset in this area, said Johnson. Johnson says he also knows in order to thrive, the city must solve problems with its bus service and garbage collection. Council is leasing and buying vehicles to replace any that have broken down. I believe we have the staff and the commitment to make Port Arthur a better and attractive place for people to come to stay and raise their families, and we hope to make that dream come true, said Johnson. And while Johnson finishes his first day in the quest toward that dream, he says check back in a few years. The new city manager is confident you'll be able to measure the progress. The city has 8 garbage trucks in full service and back on schedule. The city is calculating the numbers to decide if it's more cost effective to continue to lease city buses from New Orleans or buy new ones.

STORYLINE:
Hurricane Humberto crashed ashore along Southeast Texas early on Thursday, bringing heavy rains and winds of up to 85 miles per hour (137 kilometres per hour) as it made its way to Louisiana, the National Weather Service said.
The Category One storm made landfall about five miles (eight kilometres) east of High Island, near Sea Rim State Park in Texas, where wind gusts measured 62 miles per hour (100 kilometres per hour), according to officials.
A hurricane warning was issued from east of High Island to Cameron, Louisiana.
A tropical storm warning was in effect from east of Cameron to Intracoastal City, Louisiana. The storm was initially expected to strike as a tropical storm until it energised into a Category 1 hurricane after midnight.
At 5 a.m. local time (0900GMT), the centre of Humberto was about 60 miles (97 kilometres) northeast of Galveston and about 25 miles (40 kilometres) northeast of High Island, Texas.
It was moving towards the north-northeast at around eight miles per hour (13 kilometres per hour).
AP Television footage showed high winds and heavy rain battering Galveston on Wednesday before the storm hit.
The storm's rain bands were spreading over the coast, and between five and 10 inches (13 to 25 centimetres) of rain were expected, with some spots possibly getting as much as 15 inches (38 centimetres).
But authorities said evacuations were not necessary.
The area expected to be hit hardest was in the far southeast corner of Texas, from Galveston Island eastward and including the Beaumont and Port Arthur areas.
Texas has had one of the wettest summers on record, with Houston soaked under the most rain it's had in 50 years. With the ground already saturated, flooding is likely, according to officials.
Governor Rick Perry has activated 50 military vehicles with 200 soldiers, plus a half-dozen helicopters and two swift-water rescue teams. Other crews from the US Coast Guard are on standby.

Largest Refineries Withstand Rain In Gulf Coast
Representatives for the plants said on Sunday, operations at the largest two U.S. refineries were unaffected by heavy rains along the Texas Gulf Coast over the weekend. Both the 600,000 barrel per day Motiva Enterprises Port Arthur, Texas refinery and Exxon Mobil Corp's 560,500 bpd Baytown, Texas, refinery were operating after more than 10 inches of rain fell over the Texas coast between Saturday and Sunday. Royal Dutch Shell's U.S. arm Shell Oil Co said the company's joint-venture 316,600 bpd Deer Park, Texas, refinery was operating normally.
