Memorial Day Ceremony, May 25th, 2016
Our Memorial Day Ceremony is a time for us to honor the brave men and women who made the supreme sacrifice in order to preserve our freedom, and all who served but are no longer with us. It’s an opportunity to recognize our students, staff and faculty who wore the uniform and those who continue to serve. It's a time for us to come together to support family members from our campus who have lost loved ones in the service of our country, whether they fell on the field of battle or after their active service ended. We will have a video presentation featuring their pictures and stories. We will be hosting service members from all branches of the Military, as well as Veterans from service organizations across our community including Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Please join us in welcoming them to our campus and providing any assistance they may require to locate our ceremony.
Our ceremony, led by Master of Ceremonies, Korean War Veteran and Post Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8870 Jim Blossey will begin in the theater. We will feature outstanding guest speakers including Lynnwood Mayor Nicola Smith, Campus President Dr. Jean Hernandez, and keynote speaker RaeLynn Ricarte. Ms. Ricarte is an award-winning journalist and author of “Living the Oath,” stories told by 29 warriors and their families about service and sacrifice. We will have special musical performances by Linda Kappus' Voice Class, bagpiper Kyle Gaul from the Northwest Junior Pipe Band, Native American Flute Player Peter Ali, and World War II Veteran Colonel Buck Weaver, USAF (Ret.) who will lead us in America The Beautiful. After our ceremony in the theater, we will have a procession led by a colorguard, bagpiper and a golf cart patriotically decorated by Girl Scout Troop 40252 to our Boots to Books Monument where we will lay a wreath created by Linda Toccoli from the Campus Horticulture Department. Following the wreathlaying we will have a reception with light refreshments in the BlackBox Theater and a display of military artifacts ranging from World War 1 to modern times.
US Marine Drum & Bugle Corps, Silent Drill Platoon Concert
Take Pride in America - Featuring the prestigious United States Marine Corps Drum & Bugle Corps, Silent Drill Platoon, and Marine Corps Color Guard, taken Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium, Mentor, Ohio (at Mentor High School). The Color Guard does not appear in this video. Had I more free space in my iPhone, I would have recorded more of the show - it was fantastic - and this video does NOT do it justice!

SUMMARY
=======
The Battle of Iwo Jima (19 February – 26 March 1945) was a major battle in which the United States Marine Corps landed on and eventually captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) during World War II. The American invasion, designated Operation Detachment, had the goal of capturing the entire island, including the three Japanese-controlled airfields (including the South Field and the Central Field), to provide a staging area for attacks on the Japanese main islands. This five-week battle comprised some of the fiercest and bloodiest fighting of the Pacific War of World War II.
After the heavy losses incurred in the battle, the strategic value of the island became controversial. It was useless to the U.S. Army as a staging base and useless to the U.S. Navy as a fleet base. However, Navy Seabees rebuilt the landing strips, which were used as emergency landing strips for USAAF B-29s.The IJA positions on the island were heavily fortified, with a dense network of bunkers, hidden artillery positions, and 18 km (11 mi) of underground tunnels. The American ground forces were supported by extensive naval artillery, and had complete air supremacy provided by U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aviators throughout the entire battle.Japanese combat deaths numbered three times the number of American deaths although, uniquely among Pacific War Marine battles, American total casualties (dead and wounded) exceeded those of the Japanese. Of the 21,000 Japanese soldiers on Iwo Jima at the beginning of the battle, only 216 were taken prisoner, some of whom were captured because they had been knocked unconscious or otherwise disabled. The majority of the remainder were killed in action, although it has been estimated that as many as 3,000 continued to resist within the various cave systems for many days afterwards, eventually succumbing to their injuries or surrendering weeks later.Despite the bloody fighting and severe casualties on both sides, the American victory was assured from the start. Overwhelming American superiority in numbers and arms as well as complete air supremacy—coupled with the impossibility of Japanese retreat or reinforcement, along with sparse food and supplies—permitted no plausible circumstance in which the Americans could have lost the battle. On February 19, 1945, the 133rd Naval Construction Battalion (NCB) joined the Fifth Marine Amphibious Corps and the Fourth Marine Division for the amphibious assault on Iwo Jima. The entire force landed on Iwo Jima on D-Day with the first assault wave led by the Fourth Marine Division. The 133rd NCHB suffered severe casualties during the fight for Iwo Jima, where it distinguished itself in both front-line combat and construction. The 133rd NCHC had 370 casualties, more than 40 percent of the 875 men that landed, the highest casualties as part of a single battle in Seabee history.Joe Rosenthal's Associated Press photograph of the raising of the U.S. flag on top of the 169 m (554 ft) Mount Suribachi by six U.S. Marines became an iconic image of the battle and the American war effort in the Pacific.
