Top Call Farm 2013 IEA Season Compilation: 6 Mos in 10 Min!
This slideshow is the 10 minute story of our inaugural season at Top Call Farm in Travelers Rest, South Carolina. Working with each girl on this team & watching them reach their goals, has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Learning about their lives- particularly how they've been shaped by horses has been beyond inspiring for me.
I hope that our story motivates more farms to consider this affordable method of competition & reach out to potential riders who may not be able to afford traditional programs, but have a love for the sport & the animals. One of the most brilliant aspects of riding is that horses don't know or care how much money their rider has. They could have millions to spare on a jumper- or not a cent to buy their own breeches, but at these competitions, the playing field is level. The goal is to showcase proper fundamentals & technique instead of being limited by the money equipment & horses can cost.
I also hope that the growth of the Interscholastic Equestrian Association helps people remember the value in the slightly older, less athletic, more common animals that our sport so often forgets. There are thousands of horses in US rescues who are solid citizens needing a second chance. A slightly crooked, plain, or senior horse is no less capable of touching the lives of the children it encounters, and is just as adept at teaching them trust, patience, and kindness. I love that this format helps these unwanted animals find a place to fit in our world.

It May Look Serene, But There’s Something Creepy Hidden At the Bottom of This Carolina Lake
**************************************************************
No light or sound penetrates the watery depths of Lake Jocassee. Its name in Cherokee means “Place of the Lost One,” and you’ll need a strong nerve to dive into it, not to mention a powerful flashlight. Still, cast a beam across its murky bed and you’ll glimpse the macabre remains of a long-lost time and place…
Fringing the Blue Ridge Escarpment in South Carolina, Lake Jocassee is surrounded by steep, forested hills cut with vertiginous gorges. The clean, clear waters of four Appalachian rivers feed the lake, which is no small body of water. Its shoreline measures 75 miles, while its area extends for 7,500 acres.

National Geographic placed the Jocassee gorges ninth on its list of “50 of the World’s Last Great Places.” However, long before it was a center of outdoor recreation, the region was populated by Native Americans. The Eastatoe, Oconee and Cherokee all called it home.
The first European to chart the region, however, was Hernando de Soto in 1539. And in 1690 he was followed by a British gold-hunter, James Moore. Indeed, by the late 1700s a European presence was well established in the gorges, and this was maintained by an extensive trade network with the Native American locals.
