SUMMARY
=======
The Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge is a wildlife refuge encompassing 965 acres (3.91 km2) located in the California coastal community of Seal Beach. Although it is located in Orange County it is included as part of the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge Complex. It was established in 1972.
The refuge is a collaboration between the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the Department of the Navy. It serves as a critical habitat and winter stopover for many birds along the Pacific Flyway. Among the birds found at the refuge are great blue herons and the three endangered species: California clapper rail, California least tern, and Belding's Savannah sparrow.The refuge is located within Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach. Public access in the refuge is limited or restricted to once-a month tour (last Saturday of each month) as it is located within an active military base.

Seal Beach NWR Sediment Augmentation - Close Up
This time lapse video shows the spraying of clean dredge material onto a new area of the marsh at Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge. The time period covers the initial spraying of an area through demobilization of the contractor.
This saltwater marsh is sinking and we have an opportunity to add some sediment. After the sediment has been applied we will monitor the site for the next 5 years with the expectation that plants will return and the cord-grass (Spartina foliosa) will be taller. Taller cord-grass benefits the light-footed Ridgeway's rail (Rallus obsoletus levipes), an endangered bird that this refuge was established to protect.

Elephant Seals - California's Coast
WINNER AT THE PANDA AWARDS AT #wildscreen! THE ACADEMY AWARDS FOR WILDLIFE FILMS. NOMINATED FOR 2 PANDA AWARDS AND WINNER OF ONE. Off the shores of the Pacific Ocean, Massive northern elephant seals battle like gladiators to become kings of the beach. Each year, the seals are forced to fight their way through towering waves to migrate to California's central coast. They arrive for one purpose. To breed. As the beach is filled with 5 ton bulls, they clash, bite and brutally attack each other to win a harem and claim themselves to be California's Beach Masters.

Farallon Islands Live Web Cam | California Academy of Sciences
Get a rare view of the Farallon Islands' craggy peaks and rocky shorelines and scan the islands for marine mammals and birds. Our high-definition webcam is newly restored and now streaming live from a lighthouse atop Southeast Farallon Island.
The islands of the Farallon Islands National Wildlife Refuge are managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and are located nearly 30 miles off the coast of San Francisco. The Farallones host globally significant wildlife populations, including hundreds of thousands of seabirds and thousands of seals and sea lions. They are also a place of science where biologists from Point Blue Conservation Science study this complex ecosystem every day of the year, looking at the data to find ways to guide conservation and restoration of the islands in the face of climate change and other threats.
Because of the important and sensitive seabird and mammal populations that use the Farallones as breeding grounds, the islands are not open to the public. They are accessed only by a small number of wildlife biologists and resource managers. Point Blue Conservation Science has been doing science and training the next generation of scientists on the islands since 1968 in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The webcam is a partnership of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Point Blue Conservation Science, and the California Academy of Sciences. Thanks to Axis and Mimosa for donating equipment and labor to this project.

Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge: 1999
This is an interview I did with Kater Bourden of U.S. Fish and Wildlife about conservation on Midway. (1999)
Midway about on the mid Pacific Island. part of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, is one of the world's most spectacular wildlife experiences. Nearly two million birds call it home for much of each year, including the world's largest population of Laysan Albatrosses, or gooney birds. Hawaiian monk seals, green sea turtles and spinner dolphins frequent Midway's crystal blue lagoon.
Midway became an overlay refuge in 1988, while still under the primary jurisdiction of the Navy. With the closure of Naval Air Facility Midway Island in 1993, there began a transition from bullets to birds, a change in mission from national defense to wildlife conservation.USFW on MIDWAY

Huell spends the day with the biologists who live on the Farallon Islands and learns about this wild and beautiful place which is just a group of islands and rocks found 27 miles off the coast of San Francisco, known as California's Galapagos, they make up the The Farallon National Wildlife Refuge. These wild and remote islands are rich with not only flora and fauna, but human history as well.
