Places to see in ( Sedona - USA )
Sedona is an Arizona desert town near Flagstaff that’s surrounded by red-rock buttes, steep canyon walls and pine forests. It’s noted for its mild climate and vibrant arts community. Uptown Sedona is dense with New Age shops, spas and art galleries. On the town’s outskirts, numerous trailheads access Red Rock State Park, which offers bird-watching, hiking and picnicking spots.
Nestled amid striking red sandstone formations at the south end of the 16-mile Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona attracts spiritual seekers, artists and healers, as well as day-trippers from Phoenix trying to escape the oppressive heat. Many New Age types believe that this area is the center of vortexes (not 'vortices' here in Sedona) that radiate the earth's power, and you'll find all sorts of alternative medicines and practices on display. More tangibly, the surrounding canyons offer outstanding hiking, biking, swimming and camping.
The town itself bustles with art galleries and expensive gourmet restaurants. In summer the traffic and the crowds can be heavy. Regionally, Oak Creek Canyon begins north of Uptown Sedona; the Village of Oak Creek, however, is south of the city.
Sedona's main attraction is its array of red sandstone formations. The formations appear to glow in brilliant orange and red when illuminated by the rising or setting sun. The red rocks form a popular backdrop for many activities, ranging from spiritual pursuits to the hundreds of hiking and mountain biking trails. Sedona was named after Sedona Arabella Miller Schnebly (1877–1950), the wife of Theodore Carlton Schnebly, the city's first postmaster, who was celebrated for her hospitality and industriousness.
Sedona is located in the Upper Sonoran Desert of northern Arizona. Sedona has mild winters and hot summers. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.2 square miles (49.7 km2), of which 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2), or 0.22%, is water. The red rocks of Sedona are formed by a unique layer of rock known as the Schnebly Hill Formation. The Schnebly Hill Formation is a thick layer of red to orange-colored sandstone found only in the Sedona vicinity. The sandstone, a member of the Supai Group, was deposited during the Permian Period.

Sedona Is Sacred
This clip is a fascinating introduction to the Sedona landscape, from internationally-renowned writer, educator, mystic and healer, Dr. Jewels Maloney. Dr. Jewels has devoted her life to a quest for expanded consciousness and has studied and taught both in academia and within ‘mystery schools’ of metaphysical learning. She has lived in Sedona, Arizona, for seventeen years, and she is passionate about both the power of its remarkable landscape, and our mutual responsibility to protect it from exploitation and over-development.
Dr. Jewels describes for us how as she first drove down Oak Creek Canyon she was enthralled by the crimson rock formations, green pine, and sparkling river. She recognised she was in a very special place, a place with the power to broaden and deepen her spiritual life and connection. She moved to Sedona, and spent many years out on the land, meditating, hiking, drumming, in sacred ceremony, and in healing. She formed an intimate and loving relationship with the energies of Sedona, based on reciprocity, respect and awe.
Three million visitors pass through Sedona a year. Some literally drive through, many just pull over at a scenic overlook and take pictures and drive on. Others come to Sedona to find healing or enlightenment or to have a reading with a psychic. Desert environments are inherently fragile, and this high desert land is no exception. With the local Chamber of Commerce committed to grow at all costs, Sedona is facing an ecological and spiritual tipping point in terms of sustainability and viability.
Dr. Jewels has become deeply concerned about this place she loves so well, and in this piece and the rest of the playlist, she asks that we consider what we can do to protect it. She has written a prayer to raise awareness of the issues it faces, and our mutual responsibility for Sedona and all sacred sites.
Please watch the next video to listen to her prayer, and to hear more of what makes Sedona sacred.
