Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Gardens (Avissawella) - Best things to do in Colombo - Travel Guide
The latest addition to the 5 botanical gardens in Sri Lanka, the Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanical Garden in Avissawella was opened to the public towards the latter part of the year 2014. You can access the botanical gardens if you travel along the Puwakpitiya – Thummodara main road while the gardens will be adjacent to the Indikada Mukalana Forest Reserve in Avissawella. The drive from Colombo takes approximately an hour or slightly more.
This wet zone botanical garden covers a land area of 79 acres (32 ha) while the climate is quite cool and temperate. The wet zone plants are well nourished since there is a stream that flows through the garden. The gardens are yet to be expanded to 105 acres in the future.

Wet Zone Botanic Garden - Seethawaka, Avissawella, Sri Lanka
Seetawaka Botanical Garden, or Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanical Garden is a botanical garden located in Sri Lanka which mainly serves as a research area and a conservation area for threatened and vulnerable endemic plant species in the Sinharaja Rain Forest region. Improving export floriculture, ex-situ conservation of wet lowland plants, and bamboo cultivation are also promoted in this garden. The garden was opened to the public in late October 2014 and it is the most recently constructed botanical garden in Sri Lanka.
The garden was established in 20th century as a plantation for Rubber and Tea, which was owned by a garden known as Pannaagula. But most of the land area was abandoned on that time, which was overtaken by Land Renew Commission. The construction of the Botanical garden commenced on 2008. The total land area of the garden is 79.07 acres (32.00 ha).
Seetawaka Botanical Garden is situated on the Puwakpitiya-Thummodara main road, at Illukowita, adjacent to the Indikada Mukalana Forest Reserve at Avissawella. The 32 ha (79 acres) garden has a cool temperate climate.
A beautiful stream flows through the garden, which sustains the existence of various wet zone plants. The tree cover is made up of large Terminalia arjuna trees.
When it comes to Botanical Gardens of Sri Lanka, the Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanical Garden is a lesser-known place and the most recently added to the list. Illukovita, an area closer to Avissawella is the home for this 106 acres Botanical Garden that is projected in 2008 and opened to the public in 2014.

It’s about a 1 1/2 hrs. of driving time from Colombo and the roads are fairly decent. There are a few rough areas here and there but it’s basically easy to travel in a car or van. As for the buses such as Tourist Coaches, it would not be that easy but with precision driving, it’s doable.

The Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanical Gardens is situated in the Colombo district. It is close to Avissawella when travelling from Puwakpitiya. It is located in Ilokovita on the Puwakpitiya-Thummodara main road. The construction of the gardens commenced in 2008 and it was opened to the public in October 2014. This park conserves wet, endemic plants for future generations. It has a calm and quiet environment with beautiful natural surroundings. There is a cool climate and a pleasant temperature in the botanical gardens. A beautiful stream flows through it and we can go on boat rides. This is an ideal place for a wonderful day out.

සතිය පුරාම කලබලකාරී ජීවන රටාවකට කොටු වෙලා ඉන්න කාර්ය බහුල ඔබට සති අන්තයේ විවේකයෙන් ගත කිරීමට හොදම තැනක් ගැන තමයි මේ කියන්න යන්නේ. ඒ තමයි සීතාවක තෙත් කලාපීය උද්භිද උද්යානය. අවිස්සාවේල්ල නගරයට කිලෝමීටර 10 ක් පමණ දුරින් පිහිටි ඉලුක් ඕවිට සුන්දර ගම්මානය ආශ්රිතව සරු තේ යායකට මායිම්ව පිහිටි මේ උද්යානය ගිය අවුරුද්දේ තමයි විවෘත වුනේ. මේ නිසා මේ ගැන වැඩිය කවුරුවත් දන්නේ නෑ.ඇත්තටම ගත්තොත් දැන් මල් බලන්න, සොබා සිරි නරඹන්න නුවරඑළියට හග්ගලට නැත්නම් පේරාදෙණියට ම යන්න ඕනෑ නෑ. අගනුවරට නුදුරින් පැය එක හමාරක දෙකක කෙටි කාලයකින් ළඟා විය හැකි සොඳුරු මල් උයනක් විදිහට මේ සීතාවක Garden එක සලකන්න පුළුවන්.

The botanical gardens bordering the fertile tea maker and rubber yard opened last year. Therefore, nobody knows more than this. If you take full advantage of this, see flowers, Nuwara Eliya or Haggala should not go to Peradeniya. This Seethawaka Garden can be considered as a beautiful flower garden which can be reached in a short span of two and a half hours.

Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Gardens is the latest addition to the 5 botanical gardens in Sri Lanka. This was opened to the public since 2014. Garden can be accessed by an approximately two hours drive from Colombo, It adjacent to the Indikada Mukalana Forest Reserve in Avissawella. This wet zone botanical garden covers a land area of 79 acres whilst authorities plan to expand up to 105 acres soon. Climate is quite cool and temperate. Wet zone plants are well-nourished by a stream that flows through the garden. Further garden serves as a conservation ground for wet lowland plants while promoting bamboo cultivation. Training programs for individuals who are involved in horticulture and facilitating research opportunities for researches and undergraduate students are also carried out here.
Information maps and boards are available for you to follow the route. The garden is photogenic while most trees consist of name boards hence you are educated while enjoying the scenery. The garden is open from 7.30 AM – 6.00 PM in 365 days. Ticket for a local costs SLR 100.
