Poland: Poland's lower house declares Volhynia massacre as a genocide
The Lower house of the Polish parliament, Sejm, passed a resolution describing the actions committed by the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) against the Poles in Volhynia during the second World War as genocide, during a parliament session in Warsaw, Friday.
The Volhynian massacre was orchestrated by a faction of the OUN and was led by nationalist activist Stepan Bandera, via its UPA military wing. The goal, as documented from the second conference of Bandera's faction, the OUN-B, was to purge all non-Ukrainians from the Ukrainian state.

Poland's lower house of parliament has voted through controversial new reforms which will see all Supreme Court judges removed and replaced. The ruling Law and Justice party with Mr Kaczyński at the head say it will make the judicial system more effective and able to fight against corruption. But critics say it is a threat to the rule of law, placing control of the judiciary in the hands of politicians. Thousands of people have also taken to the streets to protest the bill in recent weeks. Most Poles agree that the courts need reform. For many, Polish courts operate too slowly and sometimes deliver questionable verdicts. In its election manifesto Law and Justice promised to reform the courts. But is this the reform so many people want?
On July 18, during the second reading of the Supreme Court Act, there was the heated exchange between the oppositions and the chairman Kaczyński in the Polish Parliament.

The Sejm of the Republic of Poland is the lower house of the Polish parliament. It consists of 460 deputies elected by universal ballot and is presided over by a speaker called the Marshal of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland.
In the Kingdom of Poland, Sejm referred to the entire three-chamber parliament of Poland, comprising the lower house, the upper house and the King. It was thus a three-estate parliament. Since the Second Polish Republic, Sejm has referred only to the lower house of the parliament; the upper house is called the Senat Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej.

Poland: Protests against media law continue in Warsaw amid heavy security presence
Hundreds of anti-government protesters gathered in front of the lower house of the Polish parliament building (Sejm) in Warsaw on Tuesday, to rally against planned government restrictions to media coverage of debates in the parliament. Police formed a cordon barricading the building to prevent any break-in attempts.
Leader of the Committee for the Defense of Democracy in Poland Mateusz Kijowski urged the protesters to continue pressuring the government until it gives in to their demands.

Poland: Arrests as hundreds rally in support of opposition MPs
Several demonstrators were physically removed by police following their failed attempt of crossing the fence surrounding the Polish Parliament in Warsaw, Wednesday, as thousands of people protested outside the building in support of those opposition MPs who delayed the parliament's opening.
Among the demonstrators were also members of the Committee for the Defence of Democracy (KOD), a civic organisation that does not align to any political party.

Poland's Kaczynski says opposition breaking law as stand-off deepens
The leader of Poland's ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, on Wednesday told opposition protesters, including lawmakers occupying parliament's debating chamber, their actions were illegal and could lead to a great calamity.
But the opposition vowed to continue a six-day-old protest bringing to a head tensions that have been building ever since the socially conservative and nationalist-minded PiS came to power with a large majority 14 months ago.
In particular, it is demanding a re-run of a debate and vote on the 2017 budget that was diverted to a side-room of the lower house, the Sejm, last week because of the sit-in, and held without opposition lawmakers present.
The stand-off was sparked last week by government plans to curb media access to the Sejm, the latest in moves by the PiS government which critics say are part of a policy drift toward authoritarianism. PiS denies there is any such trend.
We are really acting in a restrained way, Kaczynski told a news conference, flanked by Prime Minister Beata Szydlo, the speakers of both chambers of parliament and a deputy speaker, against a backdrop of white-and-red Polish flags.
Opposition lawmakers are bound by the law as all other citizens are ... Blocking, taking away freedom from citizens, not allowing normal movements are all criminal acts and these acts are accepted (by the opposition), Kaczynski said.
This is really a road to a great calamity.
In Brussels, the vice-president of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, said the government must stop undermining Poland's constitutional court and said the EU would use all its powers to help protect Polish democracy.
Earlier this year, the Commission, the European Union's executive arm, opened a formal inquiry into the rule of law in Poland, a country previously seen as a model for the transition from communism to democratic rule and a market economy.
Warsaw denies it has undermined the top court and says there is no legal basis in EU treaties for the Commission's inquiry.
EU WON'T DROP ISSUE
Timmermans gave Warsaw two months to respond to its recommendations, which would essentially mean rolling back measures Brussels says are at odds with the EU's democratic values and weaken judicial independence in Poland.
We will not drop this issue, Timmermans told a news conference, without elaborating.
If all other member states agreed, Poland could lose its voting rights in the 28-nation EU, but Hungary has said it would veto such a move.
Timmermans also said on Wednesday the position of Poland's constitutional court's head must not be filled until questions about the court's independence were resolved.
A few hours before his comment, Polish President Andrzej Duda, a PiS ally, replaced the outgoing head of the court.
Fears of a drift toward authoritarianism under PiS have prompted protests in cities over the last year. But although a blockade of
The focus of protests has now switched to the budget debate, which the opposition says was conducted irregularly and is invalid.
If PiS is not open to concessions ... then I do not see other options than to continue the protest until it is effective, Ryszard Petru, leader of the liberal Nowoczesna opposition party, told reporters.
The protests have mainly been peaceful, but police have now cordoned parliament off with metal anti-riot barriers.
The government has placed state media and prosecutors under its direct control and changed legislation determining the functioning of the constitutional court.
Poland's financial markets have shown little reaction to the stand-off, with its currency, bonds and share indices all little changed.

Polish ruling party prevails in standoff

Poland's conservative ruling party appeared to prevail Wednesday in an ongoing standoff in parliament as the Senate approved a budget that centrist opponents said was passed illegally.
In an unprecedented political crisis, opposition lawmakers have occupied the plenary hall in the Sejm, the lower house of Poland's parliament, since Dec. 16.
The main point of contention was a budget vote which two centrist opposition parties said was held illegally. They had demanded a repeat vote.
But the ruling Law and Justice party held firm in refusing to have the budget reconsidered in the lower chamber.
The Senate - which is dominated by the ruling party - passed the budget on Wednesday without making any changes.
Opposition lawmakers denounced the Senate's move as a crowd of anti-government protesters gathered outside parliament and expressed anger at what they see as anti-democratic practices taking hold in Poland.
But ruling party chairman Jaroslaw accused the protesting lawmakers of being the ones to violate democratic norms with their blockade.
Kaczynski's opponents say his populist methods are increasingly authoritarian and they have argued the blockade of Parliament is necessary to defend democratic standards.
