Selby Abbey is an Anglican parish church in the town of Selby, North Yorkshire, England. It is Grade I listed. It is one of the relatively few surviving abbey churches of the medieval period, and, although not a cathedral, is one of the biggest. It was founded by Benedict of Auxerre in 1069 and subsequently built by the de Lacy family.
For a time after the dissolution, the church was unused but in 1618 it became the Parish Church of Selby. During the English Civil War and the Commonwealth period the building suffered with the north transept window being destroyed, and the statues on the brackets in the Choir were demolished.
Like York Minster, the church rests on a base of sand and has suffered from subsidence. Many sections collapsed entirely during the seventeenth century, including the central tower in 1690 which destroyed the south transept. The Tower was rebuilt, but not the transept. In the eighteenth century the Choir was filled with galleries, and used for services, the Nave only used for secular purposes.
In 1935 the architect Charles Marriott Oldrid Scott, son of John Oldrid Scott, raised the height of the towers at the front. In 1952 the Abbey was given Grade I listed status. In 1969 Selby Abbey became the first parish church to hold the annual service for the distribution of the Royal Maundy.

Selby is a town and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. Situated 14 miles south of the city of York, along the course of the River Ouse, The town’s origins date from the establishment of a Viking settlement on the banks of the River Ouse. Archaeological investigations in Selby have revealed extensive remains, including waterlogged deposits in the core of the town dating from the Roman period onwards.
Historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, much of the wealth of the town was facilitated via Selby's position upon the banks of the River Ouse. In the past, Selby had a large shipbuilding industry and was an important port, for the most part due to the Selby Canal which brought trade from the city of Leeds. Selby is home to Selby Town F.C. who play in the Northern Counties East Football League.
A notable feature of the abbey is the 14th century Washington Window, featuring the heraldic arms of the ancestors of George Washington, the first president of the United States. The design is often cited as an influence for the Stars and Stripes flag. The abbey was founded when Benedict saw three swans on a lake in Selby, and he saw it as a sign of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. That is why the official crest of Selby Abbey is three swans.
Selby is expanding to become a larger town. New houses and shops are being built on the present town's outskirts with the expansion of the town stretching as far as the bypass, although this has resulted in the loss of some trade from the town centre. Meanwhile, the riverfront area is being revamped with modern housing and fashionable flats. Selby was also a centre for shipbuilding, with vessels launched into the river. This often required the more unusual technique of launching the vessels side-on into the river due to lack of space for a more conventional stern first or bow first launch.
Selby lies on the tidal River Ouse in a natural area of Yorkshire known as the Humberhead Levels. The main roads which cross at Selby are the A63 from Leeds to Hull and the A19 from Doncaster to York, though the A19 and A63 no longer meet in Selby itself since the opening of the Selby Bypass in 2004. The River Ouse is navigable upstream as far as York so the old toll bridge by which the A63 crossed the river at Selby had to allow for this. For many years the swing bridge in Selby was a notorious local bottleneck but since the opening of the Selby bypass congestion in the town has been relieved.
The importance of Selby as a market town has declined in recent decades and its short lived prominence as the centre of the Selby Coalfield has also waned. Selby is a commuter town with proximity to both York and Leeds. Its popularity as a tourist destination, due to Selby Abbey, has led to a large amount of development and renovation in the town and surrounding area.
Selby is the transport hub for the local area and has a bus and railway station running services to many places around the area. Train services from Selby railway station run directly to London King's Cross, Leeds, Manchester Piccadilly, York and other destinations. Arriva have a bus depot in Selby, from where they offer a range of local services, as well as longer services to Goole, Doncaster, Leeds, Pontefract, Wakefield and York. Thornes Independent of Hemingbrough also offer a range of services in the area.

Michelle and Hey's wedding was filled with all the typical fun and delights we have come to expect from a Chinese wedding. This was of course combined with a touch of English tradition. A combination to provide an amazing blend of culture, tradition and of lets not forget the pre wedding games. For those who haven't been to a Chinese wedding, the groom and groomsmen are certainly made to work during the morning, but its all in good spirits.
We started our day with Michelle and the girls in a cottage on the edge of Carlton Towers. Preparations were pretty chilled out until it was time for the boys to arrive and be put through there cases with various games.
We then made our way to Carlton Towers for a traditional Chinese tea ceremony followed, by a bus ride to the splendid Selby Abbey. Selby Abbey is huge and as grand as they come for a wedding ceremony. We have never seen a bride have to walk so far down an aisle.
The Abbey has celebrity status, and hosted a recent wedding for two well known Asian celebrities.
After the ceremony it was back to Carlton Towers to party the night away.

We had the pleasure to be asked to film the Wedding of Ang and Tianci. Their day started at Hazlewood Castle for Bridal preparations and then onto Selby Abbey where we created a 'Jay Chou' styled video (Ang favorite pop star and who also married there! - check out the other video we posted). On returning to Hazlewood the day continued with photos, speeches, cake cutting and then the wedding breakfast.

Selby Abbey
Selby Abbey is unique in the North of England, as the first monastery to be founded in the North after the Norman Conquest and one of the few in England to have survived as a parish church.
The Norman Nave and Decorated Chancel are considered to be among the finest examples of 12th and 14th Century architecture in England. The Abbey was granted its founding charter by William the Conqueror and is reputed to be the birthplace in September 1068 of King Henry I of England, the son of King William I and Queen Mathilda.
