This building was constructed in 1871,Designed by Thorwas James Waters a British engine, it is the oldest western-style building in Osaka city,The “Sempukan”was originally a reception house for the Mint Bureau, and the word “Sempukan” means coin. This building was constructed in brick, and is surrounded by a wide terrace supported by thick stone columns. In addition to the Mint Bureau, there used to be many chemical factories along Okawa River, and this area played a significant role in the development of not only modern Osaka,but many of Japan’s industries.
