Seneca Rocks is made of Tuscaora quartzite. It is popular with rock climbers. There is a trail along the north side for non climbers to a lookout deck. There is also an excellent discovery center at the base of the rocks.

Seneca Rocks & Seneca Shadows Campground
I just spent a couple days at Seneca Shadows Campground in Seneca Rocks, WV. Definitely a wilderness in the West Virginia Appalachian Mountains. There are a lot of activities in the region such as rock climbing, hiking, kayaking. Be aware that there is NO cell service but, there is wifi and the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center. The wifi signal is pretty strong inside certain areas of the building but all but nonexistent outside.
According to the Forest Service website, the hardness of the Tuscarora sandstone formation, and the degree of climbing difficulty, Seneca Rocks offers rock climbers a unique opportunity found nowhere else in the east. There are over 375 major mapped climbing routes, varying in degree from the easiest (5.0) to the most difficult (5.12). Only trained and experienced rock climbers should attempt to scale the rocks. There are two climbing schools located in the communities of Seneca Rocks and nearby Riverton who train prospective climbers in beginning and advanced rock climbing. The school in Riverton also offers a climbers rescue course.

Milky Way and Hiking trip with a group of friends. We left Northern Virginia at 7PM. We arrived at Seneca Rocks around 10:45PM. It took us about 40 minutes to hike to the top of Seneca Rocks and we stayed at the top of the summit sleeping under the stars. It was a 6% moon and we had little to none light pollution. The stars were beautiful and the sunrise was great as well. The hike up is very short and great for anyone. Only part to watch out is the summit where there is jagged rocks, so watch your step and be careful. Also, if you plan on staying the night be sure to bring some warm clothes as it tends to get pretty cold during the night/early morning. The overall trip was a lot of fun and relaxing. My car battery died and luckily a local elderly man (extremely kind) jumped our car. So thank you so much to you sir. Also, thank you Tiffani and Kelly for asking him for his help while Miguel, Saul, Myself went down the road to get some help. The people are very kind and friendly. Highly recommend to anyone. As well, the Waffle House we stopped by was really good. Those chocolate chip waffles hit the spot!

Hike up to the top of Seneca Rocks in WV
Hike with me at Seneca Rocks West Virginia during the fall. A spectacular rock formation that juts straight up for several hundred feet in the wild countryside of West Virginia! Hike with me along the main trail to the viewing platform at the top of the rocks which gives a great view of the surrounding area. Also hike along as I follow Roy Gap Rd to give a view of the back side of the rocks!

Fabulous hike with buddies Mark Schoenfeld, Greg Toews, & Neil Klugman. Hiked up the steep Blue Blaze climbers trail, and came down the 1.5 mile tourists trail. 1000 ft. of vertical climb from the parking lot to the top. Finished with a refreshing swim in the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River.
