Seneca Rocks & Seneca Shadows Campground
I just spent a couple days at Seneca Shadows Campground in Seneca Rocks, WV. Definitely a wilderness in the West Virginia Appalachian Mountains. There are a lot of activities in the region such as rock climbing, hiking, kayaking. Be aware that there is NO cell service but, there is wifi and the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center. The wifi signal is pretty strong inside certain areas of the building but all but nonexistent outside.
According to the Forest Service website, the hardness of the Tuscarora sandstone formation, and the degree of climbing difficulty, Seneca Rocks offers rock climbers a unique opportunity found nowhere else in the east. There are over 375 major mapped climbing routes, varying in degree from the easiest (5.0) to the most difficult (5.12). Only trained and experienced rock climbers should attempt to scale the rocks. There are two climbing schools located in the communities of Seneca Rocks and nearby Riverton who train prospective climbers in beginning and advanced rock climbing. The school in Riverton also offers a climbers rescue course.

Seneca Rocks, WV Rock Climbing Trip
Heather and I spent the day being guided at Seneca Rocks in West Virginia. We climbed Ecstacy Junior - 5.4, and did a nice long rappel. After playing around on the first pitch of The Prune a 5.7, Heather also got to climb on Humphrey's Head before we all walked down the stair master at the end of the day.

Nelson Rocks | FULL ROCK CLIMBING - West Virginia 2017
On this day (October 2017), I explored Nelson Rock in Circleville, West Virginia. It contains several other similar razorback ridges or fins including Seneca Rocks, Champe Rocks, and Judy Rocks, all on the western flank of North Fork Mountain. Nelson Rocks mountain climb is a great experience with beautiful sight scenes and extreme heights that can be deadly. The staff are extremely supportive with great attitudes and will assure your guidance to safety. Although, you are signing your life away with the wavier prior to payment (Total with tax: $121.90). Also, I’ve been told that an 84 year old man and a blind individual have completed this mountain climb.

Seneca Rocks
Recorded on June 5, 2003. Seneca Rocks is a large crag and local landmark in Pendleton County in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. It is easily visible and accessible along West Virginia Route 28 in the Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area. One of the best-known scenic attractions in West Virginia, the sheer rock face of Seneca Rocks is a popular challenge for rock climbers.

Hiking Pee Wee Point via the Beacon Trail and Pee Wee Trail - Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area
This hike takes place in the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area in the Pan Handle of West Virginia outside of Martinsburg. The highest point reached is the summit of Third Hill Mountain at 2,171 feet (Berkeley County’s highest point), and the hike ultimately reaches the Pee Wee Point (1,660 ft.). This trail is easy (class 1) over mostly even terrain, only a couple logs to step over.
Using google maps will get you fairly close to the trailhead. I was coming from the east and google was about a ¼ mile short. Once at the trailhead there is parking along the North side of Hampshire Grade Rd.
Starting on the Beacon Trail you will find a washed out trail. The forest in this area is wide open which can make it difficult to differentiate the trail from the surrounding forest. While I was there a massive blow down blocked the trail, however since the forest is so open it was easily avoided. The trail is blazed in blue. All of a sudden the forest fills in and the trail narrows with mountain laurel lining the trail. This section has moss covering most of the trail making for a nice soft walkway. At 1.1 miles is the summit of Third Hill Mountain (2,171). On the summit is a Shanghai Beacon tower, with a ladder leading to a small platform approximately 50 feet up. The trail continues south where the grasses may impede on the trail in spring/summer. The junction with the Pee Wee trail occurs at mile 1.7. Turn left and continue straight on the Pee Wee trail through three clearings until it finally reaches Pee Wee Point at 3.5 miles. The view from Pee Wee Point is limited. Retrace the path to return to the trailhead.

It is the only true peak — a peak inaccessible except by technical rock climbing techniques — on the East Coast of the United States. One of the best-known scenic attractions in West Virginia, the sheer rock faces are a popular challenge for rock climbers.
Seneca Rocks is easily visible and accessible along West Virginia Route 28 near U.S. Route 33 in the Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area of the Monongahela National Forest.

Last year, I took pictures of Pinnacle rock. This time we will explore Black Rock, Turkey Rock and Bramwell Lake. These rocks are off the beaten trail but are still part of the whole Pinnacle Rock State Park. Strange that no one has ever questioned this as something that could possibly be manmade.
