Accessibility At Wakayama Castle and Ninja History at Eunji!
In this episode, we visit Wakayama Castle to see how the Ninja are assisting the community in a new way. I haven't seen many castles in Japan address accessibility, so this was a really cool thing to experience.
Then we visit Eunji temple where I experience zen meditation, learn some history, and purchase my first ever Goshuin-cho -- a special stamp book you can use to collect personal signatures at shrines and temples with across Japan.

Japan Travel: Kofukuji Temple one of four greatest temples of Nara Period, Nara20
Japan Travel: Kofukuji Temple one of four greatest temples of Nara Period, Nara20
Kofukuji Temple used to be the family temple of the Fujiwara, which is the most powerful family clan over much of the Nara and Heian Periods. The temple was founded in Nara at the same time as the capital foundation in 710. At the height of Fujiwara domination, the temple consisted of over 150 buildings.
Today there remain a couple of buildings of great historic importance, including a five story pagoda and a three story pagoda. The five story pagoda is 50 meter tall, ranking second in Japan, after the five story pagoda at Kyoto's Toji Temple with only seven meter gap. Kofukuji's pagoda is both a landmark and symbol of Nara. It was first built in 730, and most recent reconstruction was done in 1426.
While addmission to Kofukuji's temple grounds is free and it can be entered around the clock, there are two areas that require addmission fee: Kofukuji's National Treasure Museum and the Eastern Golden Hall. The National Treasure Museum, recently renovated, exhibits part of the temple's great art collection and is something that must not miss out on for lovers of Buddhist art. Among the many outstanding exhibits, the three-faced, six-armed Ashura Statue is one of the most renowned Buddhist statues in all of Japan.
Hours: 9:00 to 17:00 (National Treasure Museum and Eastern Golden Hall)
Closed: Opened all year round.
Admission: 600 yen (National Treasure Museum), 300 yen (Eastern Golden Hall), 800 yen (both)

Cycling to Fushimi Inari-Taisha Shrine (The 1000 Gates) in Kyoto, Japan
Both of us finally travelled around Kyoto by bike (click here to read our Cycling Tips in Kyoto) and our first destination was this stunning Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. It's the place that you should go while in Kyoto. The thousands of gates are fascinating! We explored the mountain or hiking trails and the shrine buildings where everything is so attractive. Even though there were a lot of visitors at the temple, the further we go it's getting quieter. We took a lot of pictures, especially when we were inside the tunnel of red gates along the way. It was truly beautiful, unlike anything else we've ever seen.

Nara is located less than one hour from Kyoto and Osaka. To-dai-ji ”the great eastern temple” is one of Japan’s most famous and historically significant Buddhist temples. It’s the main attraction of Nara. Its Great Buddha Hall , houses the world's largest bronze statue of the Buddha known as Daibutsu in Japanese. Until recently this was the largest wooden building in the world
The temple also serves as the Japanese headquarters of the Kegon school of Buddhism. The temple is a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara, together with seven other sites including temples, shrines and places in the city of Nara.
There were many massive columns in the 320-year-old “Hall of the Great Buddha” , but one amongst them was quite special. Many of the guide books and guides here say that if one is able to fit through the hole in that column, he will achieve enlightenment.
Deer, regarded as messengers of the gods in the Shinto religion, roam the grounds freely. Deer biscuits are also available in the shops around .These Deer have their antlers removed so they are harmless. But I was still scared as they were almost as tall as me.
There are so many souvenir shops here- for deer doll, books, sweets and snacks.
Kobe is the capital of Hyogo Prefecture and one of Japan's ten largest cities. Located between the sea and the Rokko mountain range, Kobe is also considered one of Japan's most attractive cities.
In 1995, Kobe was hit by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, which killed over 5000 people and destroyed tens of thousands of buildings. Today the city is completely rebuilt, and few signs of the terrible event remain.
Harborland is a shopping paradise. Kobe Port Tower is located here. The Kobe Port Tower is 108 m high. It also has an observation deck.

SUMMARY
=======
Shinto (神道, Shintō) or kami-no-michi (among other names) is the traditional religion of Japan that focuses on ritual practices to be carried out diligently to establish a connection between present-day Japan and its ancient past.Shinto practices were first recorded and codified in the written historical records of the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki in the 8th century. Still, these earliest Japanese writings do not refer to a unified religion, but rather to a collection of native beliefs and mythology. Shinto today is the religion of public shrines devoted to the worship of a multitude of spirits, essences (kami), suited to various purposes such as war memorials and harvest festivals, and applies as well to various sectarian organizations. Practitioners express their diverse beliefs through a standard language and practice, adopting a similar style in dress and ritual, dating from around the time of the Nara and Heian periods (8th–12th century). The word Shinto (Way of the Gods) was adopted, originally as Jindō or Shindō, from the written Chinese Shendao (神道, pinyin: shéndào), combining two kanji: shin (神), meaning spirit or kami; and michi (道), path, meaning a philosophical path or study (from the Chinese word dào). The oldest recorded usage of the word Shindo is from the second half of the 6th century. Kami is rendered in English as spirits, essences, or gods, and refers to the energy generating the phenomena. Since the Japanese language does not distinguish between singular and plural, kami also refers to the singular divinity, or sacred essence, that manifests in multiple forms: rocks, trees, rivers, animals, places, and even people can be said to possess the nature of kami. Kami and people are not separate; they exist within the same world and share its interrelated complexity. As much as nearly 80% of the population in Japan participates in Shinto practices or rituals, but only a small percentage of these identify themselves as Shintoists in surveys. This is because Shinto has different meanings in Japan. Most of the Japanese attend Shinto shrines and beseech kami without belonging to an institutional Shinto religion. There are no formal rituals to become a practitioner of folk Shinto. Thus, Shinto membership is often estimated counting only those who do join organised Shinto sects. Shinto has about 81,000 shrines and about 85,000 priests in the country. According to surveys carried out in 2006 and 2008, less than 40% of the population of Japan identifies with an organised religion: around 35% are Buddhists, 3% to 4% are members of Shinto sects and derived religions. In 2008, 26% of the participants reported often visiting Shinto shrines, while only 16.2% expressed belief in the existence of a god or gods (神) in general.According to Inoue (2003): In modern scholarship, the term is often used with reference to kami worship and related theologies, rituals and practices. In these contexts, 'Shinto' takes on the meaning of 'Japan's traditional religion', as opposed to foreign religions ...
