Seodaemun Prison History Hall in Seoul, South Korea
The Seodaemun Prison History Hall is a museum and memorial that honors those who suffered and gave up their lives for Korea during the Japanese occupation. Construction on the prison started in 1907. When completed on October 21, 1908, it was known as Gyeongseong Gamok. The name was changed to Seodaemun on September 3, 1912. The prison was built by the Japanese during their occupation of Korea from 1910 to 1945.
Visiting Seodaemun Prison (서대문형무소역사관) - A DAY IN KOREA ???????? #4
We met up for lunch in Sinchon and then we visited the Seodaemun Prison. The prison was built by the Japanese to lock up, torture, and murder innocent Koreans who wanted freedom from Japanese colonial rule. Many people lost their lives there.

Travel Korea: Seodaemun Japanese Prison History Hall
Koreans celebrate 71st Liberation Day at Seodaemun Prison History Hall
광복 71주년, 서대문형무소역사관 행사
All throughout this historic day,... various events were held across the nation.
Our Kim Hyesung went to one in central Seoul herself... to see Koreans reflect and remember all those who sacrificed their lives for the freedom that we enjoy today.
The feet of Korean independence activists were printed at a ceremony on Sunday at Seodaemun Prison History Hall... to commemorate their spirit of perseverance and patriotism.
The prison-turned-museum also offered several activities for both children and adults... to engage more people in remembering the legacies of Korean independence activists and help them reflect on the meaning of Liberation Day.
In the recreated prison, visitors can find trial records and documents on over 60-thousand Korean independence activists who were imprisoned here back then.
Visitors can also explore the old jail cells, torture chambers and execution rooms where they were held.
After seeing the jail, a symbol of Korea's resistance against Japan's thirty-five year colonial rule, children learn the story of a well-known independence activist, Ahn Jung-geun, through a play.
Considered a national hero, Ahn is known for assassinating a four-time prime minister of Japan and the first resident governor of Japanese-run Korea Ito Hirobumi in 1909, which helped boost the Korean people's aspirations and desire for independence.
After watching the play, the children take time to write a letter to Ahn.
I really want to thank our independence activists. Coming here made me think more about our country and how precious the Korean language is.
To lighten up the solemn atmosphere, children can also enjoy other activities like face printing and making a mug.
And finally, in the highlight of the event, a flash mob performs with patterned umbrellas using the Korean national flag, Taegeukgi, and dances to the Korean folksong Arirang.
As the colors blue, white, red and black create waves, they also seem to connect Korea's past and present, the old and the young... in a celebration of the country's liberation.

Seodaemun Prison History Museum
A prisão de Seodaemun é localizada no Parque da Independência construída no final da Era Joseon, em torno de 1910. É nesse local que os Japoneses torturaram todas as pessoas que apoiavam o movimento da Independência da Coréia.
