Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Sabah, Malaysia
Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre was opened in 1964 with the aim of orphaned, injured or displaced orangutans back to the wild. So far, some 760 orangutan have successfully undergone the process of rehabilitation and have been released into the 4294 hectare Kabili-Sepilok Forest, a virgin jungle reserve rich in tropical rainforest and mangrove swamp.

Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre is located about 25 kilometres west of Sandakan in the state of Sabah, Malaysia.
Sepilog Orangutan rehabilitation centre opened in 1964 as the first official orangutan rehabilitation project for rescued orphaned baby orangutans from logging sites, plantations, illegal hunting or kept as pets.The orphaned orangutans are trained to survive again in the wild and are released as soon as they are ready. The sanctuary is located within the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve which covers an area of 4,294 ha (10,610 acres), much of which is virgin rainforest.Today around 60 to 80 orangutans are living free in the reserve. It has become one of Sabah's tourist attractions.
In October 2014 the centre opened a new section where visitors can view the nursery area where the younger Orangutans first learn to be outside and play on a large climbing frame. This consists of 2 large indoor seating areas (one with air conditioning and one with fans only) with a large window that overlooks the play area. There is no additional charge to enter this part of the centre.

ORANGUTAN REHABILITATION CENTRE | KOTA KINABALU TO SEPILOK BORNEO
Palm oil plantations, pulp plantations, illegal logging and forest fires are the key drivers of deforestation in Borneo. ... Habitat conversion from natural forests to palm oil plantations has been shown to have a devastating impact on tropical forests, along with plants and animals that depend on them.
Although the government are making efforts to reduce the amount and size of palm oil plantations they are still affecting the natural habitats of the orangutans and other wildlife - make sure you do not visit rehabilitation sanctuaries that are within oil palm plantations - they do not support rehabilitation of the animals. Sepilok rehabilitation centre has been set up to increase the wild orangutan population and contact with humans is as little as possible - the sunbear conservation only allow you to view sunbears that have already had too much human contact - unfortunately these bears will never return to the wild. Within this centre there are areas cut off to visitors that have sun bears with the hope of beaing released into the wild again.

The Orangutans of Borneo - Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre
I spent two months working at the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Sabah, Borneo and It was one of the best experiences of my life.
We share 97% DNA with these amazing, playful and intelligent creatures yet they are on the verge of extinction. Deforestation across Malaysia and Indonesia is taking away their homes.
The Sepilok orangutan Rehabilitation centre and its amazing staff are doing all they can to help the orangutans, they raise and rehabilitate orphaned orangutans and their work has helped release hundreds back into the wild there are similar organisations on the island and they are making a difference but it is not enough.
But what can we do? The biggest threat is caused from our demand of unsustainable palm oil which can be found in so many products we use, if there is less demand then we can collectively make a difference.

ORANGUTAN SANCTUARY in BORNEO MALAYSIA - Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre (STOP PALM OIL!!)
We learned so much when visiting the ORANGUTAN SANCTUARY at Sepilok Rehabilitation Center in BORNEO MALAYSIA. On our way to the center, we found out that PALM OIL is causing a huge problem in deforestation in MALAYSIA. The interest in palm oil has wiped out 50% of the animals in 30 years here in Malaysia. These are some of the few remaining orangutans and sun bears left in the world. The rehabilitation center cares for orangutans who were once exotic pets, served in the circus, or other captivating circumstances. The center cares for them and releases them back into the wild when they are ready. In addition, the center is NOT a ZOO. It is completely open so animals are free to roam wherever they please.
