Stuttgart Germany Attractions: Sepulchral Chapel on the Württemberg
Sepulchral Chapel on the Württemberg
The sepulchral chapel on Württemberg hill (Grabkapelle auf dem Württemberg ) was erected by King Wilhelm I in memory of his beloved wife Katharina, who died at a young age. Offering spectacular views over Stuttgart, this monument to eternal love is considered Baden-Württemberg’s most romantic spot.
The prominently positioned chapel, constructed between 1820 and 1824, overlooks the Neckar Valley. King Wilhelm purposely chose this deeply symbolic location on the site of the former family residence of the dukes of Württemberg. Moreover, it was one of Queen Katharina’s favourite places.
Love never dies
The inscription above the entrance to the chapel can be interpreted as King Wilhelm’s promise, eternalised by this monument. Following the sudden death of his Russian wife on 9 January 1819, Wilhelm ordered the removal of the old Wirtemberg Castle and invited architects to submit plans for a mausoleum. He chose the design by Giovanni Salucci. Later, the King himself and his eldest daughter Marie Friederike Charlotte von Württemberg were also buried here. The tomb designated for his younger daughter Sophie remained empty – she married the King of the Netherlands and was laid to rest in Delft.
Just a stone’s throw away is a residential house that was also designed by Salucci. It was home to a chaplain and two choristers who were employed to regularly pray and sing for Katharina’s salvation.

The Württemberg Mausoleum is a memorial in the Rotenberg part of Untertürkheim in Stuttgart, Germany. The mausoleum stands on the peak of Württemberg Hill at the westernmost end of Schurwald woods overlooking the Neckar river.
The memorial was built for Catherine Pavlovna of Russia (1788–1819), the second wife of William I of Württemberg (1781–1864). The remains of William I and his daughter Maria Friederike Charlotte of Württemberg (1816–1887) are also housed in the mausoleum.
The mausoleum was built after the death of Queen Catherine between 1820 and 1824 based on a design drafted by Giovanni Salucci. The location on the former site of Burg Wirtemberg was chosen as the home of the House of Württemberg. Between 1825 and 1899 the mausoleum was used as a Russian Orthodox Church place of worship. The memorial is still used to this day for a Russian Orthodox service every Pentecost.
The building stands by itself in the middle of the vineyards along the river Neckar making it visible from afar. The mausoleum is inspired by the Villa Capra La Rotonda build by Andrea Palladio. Salucci created a circular structure made from local sandstone with three pillared porticos and steps leading up to it. The entirely with interior has a domed roof. The arrangement of pillars and the colossal statues of the four Evangelists reflect the neoclassical preference for severity and purity of style.

Places to see in ( Stuttgart - Germany ) Rubble Hill
The About this sound Birkenkopf is a prominent hill in Stuttgart, Germany. At an elevation of 511m, it is the highest point in the city centre of Stuttgart and is almost 300m higher than the river Neckar on which the city lies. It is in part a Schuttberg, an artificial hill built from the ruins and rubble from World War II.
During the war, 53 Allied bombing missions destroyed over 45% of Stuttgart, and nearly the entire city center. Between 1953 and 1957, 1.5 million cubic meters of rubble were cleared and moved to the hill, which resulted in an increase in height of around 40 meters. At the summit there are many recognizable facades from ruined buildings. The locals colloquially call the Birkenkopf Monte Scherbelino, which roughly translates as Mount Shards but in an expression alluding to Italian.
One of the pieces of rubble has a plaque attached to it, which says: Dieser Berg nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg aufgetürmt aus den Trümmern der Stadt steht den Opfern zum Gedächtnis den Lebenden zur Mahnung. This translates roughly as: This mountain piled up after World War II from the rubble of the city stands as a memorial to the victims and a admonition to the living.
From the summit the whole city center can be seen, and on a clear day the view extends to the Swabian Alb, to the Black Forest, and the lowlands of Württemberg. On the summit there is a steel cross, which in 2003 replaced the original 1953 wooden cross. In the summer, early morning services are held on Sundays here.
