佐渡へのアクセス | Japan Travel Guide
More information about Sado:
- Geography
Sado is located in the Sea of Japan and is a part of Niigata Prefecture. The island is 855 km2(330 mile2)in area which is bigger than the 23 wards of Tokyo(621 km2 = 240 mile2)and the country of Bahrain(758 km2 = 293 mile2)which is ranked 184th in the world. The tourist season is in summer, but there are also people who make the effort to come in winter to view the rough waves of the Sea of Japan at that time.
- Landmarks
Landmarks include Sado Gold Mine whose mountain top has been cleaved in half due to the efforts of gold mining, Toki Forest Park where you can see the Japanese crested ibis which is an endangered species, and the Ogi Diving Center where you can get a unique sea kayaking experience through blue grottoes and the waters of the Sea of Japan. There are also plenty of highlights such as Chokoku-ji Temple where you can have more than 30 Buddhist experiences including one involving entering a coffin. Usually between April and October, you can view traditional nighttime performances of Noh theater which occur outside the temple, and with Sado being the base for the world-famous Kodo wadaiko drumming troupe, you can hear the drumming amid nature as one example of art and nature splendidly co-existing.
- Food
The specialty of Sado Island which is completely encircled by the Sea of Japan has got to be seafood. It’s no exaggeration to say that sushi with several times the taste can be savored here at only a fraction of the price charged in Tokyo. The new local dish that has been all the rage is buri-katsudon or deep-fried yellowtail on rice. Natural yellowtail deep-fried as a cutlet covered in a special sauce consisting of ago-dashi soy sauce topped on Sado rice makes for a superb dish. The sake brewed from the nature of the island is also delicious, and the island is also home to the brewery for Manotsuru sake which is the sake served in first class on Air France flights.
- Getting Around
It takes the better part of 2 hours from Tokyo to Niigata Station, followed by a 15-minute bus ride to Niigata Port. And then it’s a trip by ferry for 1-2.5 hours from Niigata Port to Ryotsu Port on Sado Island.
Rental cars are handy for getting around the island. There is no train service. Rental electric bicycles are also convenient.
- Accommodations
Accommodations around Ryotsu Port are convenient on the first day. Aikawa and Mano which are located in the center of the island are also great as starting points for sightseeing.

Asakusa , Taitō, Tokyo, Japan - The temple ground of Sensō-ji
Asakusa is a district in Taitō, Tokyo, Japan, famous for the Sensō-ji, a Buddhist temple dedicated to the bodhisattva Kannon. There are several other temples in Asakusa, as well as various festivals, such as the Sanja Matsuri.
The Nakamise-dōri is a street on the approach to the temple. The length of the street is approximately 250 meters and contains around 90 shops. Many tourists, both Japanese and from abroad, visit Sensō-ji every year. Catering to the visiting crowds, the surrounding area has many traditional shops and eating places that feature traditional dishes, hand-made noodles, sushi, tempura, etc. Nakamise-Dori, the street leading from the Thunder Gate to the temple itself, is lined with small shops selling souvenirs ranging from fans, woodblock prints, kimono and other robes, Buddhist scrolls, traditional sweets, to Godzilla toys, t-shirts and mobile phone straps. These shops themselves are part of a living tradition of selling to pilgrims who walked to Sensō-ji.
Within the temple itself, and also at many places on its approach, there are o-mikuji stalls. For a suggested donation of 100 yen, visitors may consult the oracle and divine answers to their questions. Querents shake labelled sticks from enclosed metal containers and read the corresponding answers they retrieve from one of 100 possible drawers.
Within the temple is a quiet contemplative garden kept in the distinctive Japanese style.
Asakusa is on the north-east fringe of central Tokyo. It is central to the area colloquially referred to as Shitamachi, which literally means low city, referring to the low elevation of this old part of Tokyo, on the banks of the Sumida River. As the name suggests, the area has a more traditionally Japanese atmosphere than some other neighborhoods in Tokyo do. With so many religious establishments, there are frequent matsuri in Asakusa, as each temple or shrine hosts at least one matsuri a year, if not every season. The largest and most popular is the Sanja Matsuri in May, when roads are closed from dawn until late in the evening.
Next to the Sensō-ji temple grounds is a small amusement park called Hanayashiki, which claims to be the oldest amusement park in Japan. The neighborhood theaters specialize in showing classic Japanese films, as many of the tourists are elderly Japanese.
Sensō-ji is an ancient Buddhist temple located in Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan. It is Tokyo's oldest temple, and one of its most significant. Formerly associated with the Tendai sect of Buddhism, it became independent after World War II. Adjacent to the temple is a 5-storey pagoda, Shinto shrine, the Asakusa Shrine.

Asakusa, Tokyo in cherry blossom season
We take you on a brief walk around Asakusa, through the famous Sensoji Temple, down Nakamise shopping street, and a walk along the cherry blossom-lined Sumida River with a view of Tokyo Sky Tree.
If you're looking for free or cheap things to do in Tokyo, Asakusa is perfect for sightseeing with it's Japanese shrines and temples. It is a nice contrast to the busy modern streets of Shibuya and Shinjuku.
Sensoji Temple is a must see tourist attraction in Tokyo. It is probably the most famous and popular temple in Tokyo. Nakamise shopping street leads up to the main grounds of Sensoji Temple. It is lined by numerous shops offering snacks, local goods and souvenirs.
The nearby banks of the Sumida river includes a riverside park, making it a great spot to rest your feet. It becomes a popular cherry blossom viewing spot in Spring and provides a good view of Tokyo Sky Tree.
