Namibia Part11: From Swakopmund to Sossusvlei/Deadvlei/Sesriem Canyon/Homestead Lodge
Day 15+16 of our Safari: From Swakopmund we drive southward. Flamingo Colonies, Kuiseb-Pass, lunch break in Solitaire, Namib Naukluft Nationalpark until we reach our destination: The Homestead Lodge. Romanic place in the middle of the desert.
Next mornig we visit Sossuvlei, dune Nr. 45, Deadvlei, dune Big Daddy and the Sesriem Canyon.
Next morning we return to Windhuk - time to say good bye to Namibia.

About This Episode:
Sesriem is more than just the gateway to Sossusvlei. It has one of its own natural wonders – the Sesriem Canyon. Do you know where the name of the settlement originates from?
Sesriem is often only thought of as just a gateway to the famous and amazing Sossusvlei, but it is also home to the Sesriem Canyon.
About 4.5km from the entrance of the Namib-Naukluft National Park, you will find unique Namibian story….. you see, the Sesriem Canyon is the second most important tourist attraction in the area after Sossusvlei. It is a natural canyon carved by the Tsauchab river in the local sedimentary rock. The name Sesriem is Afrikaans and means six rawhide thongs. This name was given by settlers on the Dorsland Trek who had to join six such thongs in order for a bucket to reach the water. Sesriem Canyon is only two metres wide in some places, and has a portion that permanently contains water, which many animals use.

This video is part 2 of 6 in the playlist containing the video log of Dawn's Explore holiday to Namibia in November 2018. Sossusvlei has some of the largest sand dunes in Namibia. We visited sand dunes Big Daddy and Dune 45, explored dead and living vlei and walked in Sesriem canyon. In the evening we were treated to African dancing and singing by the staff at Hammerstein Lodge.

NAMIBIA in HD: SESRIEM CANYON
Der kleine aber feine Sesriem Canyon im Namib-Naukluft Nationalpark Namibia. Im Laufe der Jahrmillionen hat sich eine enge, 30-40m tiefe Schlucht gebildet, wenn ca. alle 10 Jahre einmal Wasser durch den Canyon fließt. Bei fast 40°C und brütender Sonne ging es am 24.09.2017 hier durch. Fast unvorstellbar, dass im Canyon das Wasser 3m hoch stehen kann und mit gewaltiger Kraft durchfließen soll, so dass sich bizarre Formen gebildet haben. Nach 1km weitet sich der Canyon und von hier fließt das Wasser als Fluss Tsauchab weiter bis Sossusvlei.

Namibia has been called the Land God Made in Anger, it is vast and wild...few countries in Africa can match Namibia's sheer natural beauty. Louis and I have been there many times and we continue to return, it is still one of our favourite safari destinations. This trip was a road trip. A way to maximise your time in Namibia is to take a plane for some of the long distances. Plenty of visitors opt for a combination of flying and driving to pack in as much as possible if you don’t have the kind of time we had... But have to say there is something special about a road trip! We had fun, easy going travelling companions and that does make all the difference!
Another thing that we think is very special about Namibia it is the first country in the world to enshrine environmental protection in its national constitution, ensuring that roughly 40 percent of the territory is designated for conservation.
We started out in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. Had a great time at the lively Joe’s Beer House with the wonderful owners of House on Olof Palme.
We headed out in the morning to Sossusvlei, the giant red sand dunes, rising from the arid salt pans, are an amazing sight. We also had a couple of nice side trips to the Seriem Canyon and Solitaire...which had it’s own kind of funky charm!
We stayed at the Mirage Desert Lodge which we really enjoyed. We all agreed that was some of the best food on the trip, the dining room had lots of ambience and the stay was really fantastic!
Swakopmund, known as Swakop in Namibia is the country's biggest coastal town and a resort for Namibians on holiday. The city's German origins are quite pronounced in beautiful old German colonial buildings throughout the city, making an even starker contrast for this town sitting at the edge of the Namib Desert. Swakopmund is like a German North Sea town with an African flair.
Swakopmund isn’t boring. In fact it’s Namibia’s most popular holiday destination, and there are myriad attractions for enjoying the great climate including surfing, fishing, lolling around on the beach and finding ways to terrify yourself – it’s the adventure sports capital of Namibia. We stayed at Swakopmund Luxury Suites Bed/Breakfast in the town centre, it was an ideal base from which to explore this delightful town and a couple of blocks from the beach. Restaurants and cafés abound and there are galleries, museums and craft markets to explore. We stayed pretty low-key wandering the streets and listening to music and the dramatic waves of the sea. The restaurant at the end of the pier was wonderful as was the music at the entrance of the pier! And the beach kitchen in a giant tent at sunset was a great place to end our stay.
A more adventurous drive was includes, in the north-west, the bleakly beautiful, fog-bound Skeleton Coast, and the mountainous desert scapes of Damaraland. This area boasts magnificent desert scenery, fascinating geological formations, archaeological sites and a unique variety of desert fauna and flora. We climbed among the fabulous Twyfelfontein rock engravings. And we were lucky in our fortune to see the famous Desert elephants. They are adapted to living under the particular conditions of the desert. They routinely move great distances between feeding grounds and the scattered waterholes where they drink during the dry season.
Etosha National Park is really unique in Africa. The park’s salt pan so large it can be seen from space. Abundant wildlife that congregates around the waterholes, giving you incredible game sightings like the rhinoceros, lion, elephant and large numbers of antelope. Must see, must do! Have to say Onguma – The Fort was a beyond fabulous stay in every way!

Der Sesriem-Canyon entstand, weil sich der heutige Trockenfluss Tsauchab tief in das Tal einschnitt. Heute führt der Fluss nur noch in der Regenzeit etwas Wasser und füllt den Canyon. Als ich am Ende der Regenzeit in Namibia war, konnten wir wenigstens etwas Wasser im Canyon sehen. Diese Stelle soll meist Wasser führen und ist Wasserstelle für viele Tiere.
Der Tsauchab entspring im Naukluft Nationalpark und versickert in einem Sandsee im Sossusvlei. Der Fluss erreicht den Atlantik nicht.

Sesriem Canyon was created because the current dry river Tsauchab cut deeply into the valley. Today, the river only during the rainy season some water and filled the canyon. When I was at the end of the rainy season in Namibia, we could at least see some water in the canyon. This job is usually cause water and is water point for many animals.
The rise in the Tsauchab Naukluft National Park and seeps in a sand sea of Sossusvlei. The river does not reach the Atlantic.

Am Tag 13 unseren Namibia Botswana Simbabwe Roadtrips geht es nochmal zum Sossusvlei. Diesmal schauen wir uns den Sesriem Canyon an und laufen auf der berühmten Dune 45.
Spontan hielten wir auf dem Hinweg an der Dusiwib Castle an und fuhren am Ende der Tagesetappe weiter nach Solitaire.
Hier gibt es nicht nur viel Oldtimer Wracks zu sehen, sondern auch den den berühmten Apfelkuchen, womit ein Traum in Erfüllung ging, diesen Ort einmal zu besuchen.

Travel with Simon on my Namibia road trip as we head out into the sand dunes at Sossuvlei to see the biggest dunes on earth. See how not to avoid getting stuck in the sand! On the way back to camp at Sesriem we will stop for breakfast at Dune 45.
On day 10 of our Namibia roadtrip we are heading out into the sand dunes at Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert to watch the sunrise.
The Sossusvlei road from the the campsite at Sesriem is through thick sand, if you don't want to get stuck then park your car at the 2x4 car park and take the shuttle. It's cheap and runs about every 15 minutes in open safari vehicles with super flat tyres.
There are a number of dunes you can visit on the way back including Dune 45 (Big Daddy) which is possibly the most photographed individual dune and great for sunset (for viewing the sunset itself rather than the sun setting over the dunes). Another famous dune worth a visit is Dune 5 or Elim Dune.
Sossusvlei forms part of the Namib Naukluft park, but don't get confused, the Namib Naukluft is a very large park and to see the red sand dunes at Sossusvlei or to see Deadvlei you must enter through the park gate at Sesriem. The camp ground known as Namib Naukluft is some 100km away in a different section of the park entirely.

The Namib-Naukluft National Park - is a national park of Namibia encompassing part of the Namib Desert (considered the world's oldest desert) and the Naukluft mountain range. Dead Vlei - Nearby is yet another place of no return this one even older, and much deader than Sossusvlei. Known as Dead Vlei or dead marsh (Vlei being Afrikaans for a type of marsh), it is found among the tallest dunes in the world – home to Big Daddy the 343m high dune shadowing over Dead Vlei. Dead Vlei was once like Sossusvlei, with the river draining into it nourishing desert life and even trees. But no longer. Some 900 years ago the climate dried up, and dunes cut off Dead Vlei from the river. It became too dry in Dead Vlei for the trees to even decompose. They simply scorched black in the sun, monuments to their own destruction. The trees, now over 1000 years old, form a barren forest.
