Cologne, a 2,000-year-old city spanning the Rhine River in western Germany, is the region’s cultural hub. A landmark of High Gothic architecture set amid reconstructed old town, the twin-spired Cologne Cathedral is also known for its gilded medieval reliquary and sweeping river views. The adjacent Museum Ludwig showcases 20th-century art, including many masterpieces by Picasso, and the Romano-Germanic Museum houses Roman antiquities.
Cologne is the largest city in the German federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the fourth-largest city in Germany (after Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich). Cologne is located within the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region, one of the major European metropolitan areas, and with more than ten million inhabitants, the largest in Germany. Cologne is located on both sides of the Rhine River, less than eighty kilometres from Belgium. The city's famous Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is the seat of the Catholic Archbishop of Cologne. The University of Cologne (Universität zu Köln) is one of Europe's oldest and largest universities.
Cologne is a major cultural centre for the Rhineland; it hosts more than thirty museums and hundreds of galleries. Exhibitions range from local ancient Roman archeological sites to contemporary graphics and sculpture. The Cologne Trade Fair hosts a number of trade shows such as Art Cologne, imm Cologne, Gamescom, and the Photokina.
Road building had been a major issue in the 1920s under the leadership of mayor Konrad Adenauer. The first German limited access road was constructed after 1929 between Cologne and Bonn. Cologne has a railway service with Deutsche Bahn InterCity and ICE-trains stopping at Köln Hauptbahnhof (Cologne Main Station), Köln Messe/Deutz and Cologne/Bonn Airport. ICE and TGV Thalys high-speed trains link Cologne with Amsterdam, Brussels (in 1h47, 9 departures/day) and Paris (in 3h14, 6 departures/day). Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln (Ports and Goods traffic Cologne, HGK) is one of the largest operators of inland ports in Germany. Ports include Köln-Deutz, Köln-Godorf, and Köln-Niehl I and II. Cologne's international airport is Cologne/Bonn Airport (CGN). It is also called Konrad Adenauer Airport after Germany's first post-war Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, who was born in the city and was mayor of Cologne from 1917 until 1933.

Bridge Over Troubled Water
A film about my car journey across the river Severn suspension bridge last week when I was abducted by aliens and examined in their ship. The crossing should only have taken 8 minutes but it took nearly an hour, according to the clock in the car, and I was late for my appointment. Of course, it may just have been a dream. I'll never really know for certain.

Treni a Preglia - BLS Power! - 03/01/2012

Preglia is a small and very typical station on the Domodossola-Brig line. In this line there's always an intense railway traffic (mainly freight traffic) because it's one of the few lines which goes from Italy to Switzerland and from there to the rest of Europe.
Most freight trains, in fact, doesn't finish their services in Switzerland but they reach Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and other European countries.
The passenger traffic, however, is limited to some EuroCity services (to Basel, Geneve and Zurich), two InterCity services per day (one train from Domodossola to Basel and one from Basel to Domodossola) and a few Regio/Interregio trains from Domodossola to Brig and vice versa for border-workers.
In this video I included all the freight and InterCity trains I managed to film on Jan/03/2012 in Preglia's railway station. I stayed there for about 6 hours and I filmed and photographed lots of BLS services, one CrossRail service, two SBB Cargo trains and two SBB CFF FFS InterCity trains.
In the end, I can say I passed a fantastic day there!
You can find a list of all the trains I filmed and photographed in the Italian description (I wasn't able to include it in the English one because the description was too long and couldn't be saved with the video).

Königswinter Railway Station, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany - 27th March, 2015
Königswinter is located on the River Rhine in North Rhine Westphalia in Germany. It has a railway line which is extremely busy with freight traffic to and from the North Sea Ports and industrial Northern Germany / industrial Southern Germany, and pretty much anywhere in Europe between including the Rhone Valley route through France and the routes through Austria. As well as this, the station has stopping passenger services travelling between Cologne and Bonn.
This film features both passenger and freight traffic. Footage is taken from the station platform. The freight includes containers, wagon trailers, cars, logs and much intermodal traffic. This rushes through at high speeds causing much noise which is a contentious issue in the Rhine valley, but the price of being an industrial powerhouse. The passenger trains are DB Regio services travelling between Cologne and Koblenz.
