Sewri Jetty | Flamingos | Mumbai | Vlog04
Sewri jetty is a well-known bird-watching spot overlooking mudflats where thousands of flamingos spend half the year. You have to go there at proper tide time to see the Flamingos and other birds. When the tide is rising and when the tide height is between 2.40 meters to 3.30 meters, it is ideal time. At this time they come near shore close to you.

Sewri Jetty Feb 10th 2018-Documentary
Sewri is a locality along the eastern edge of South Mumbai, in Maharashtra, India. It is also the name of a railway station on the Central Railway Harbour Line.
Sewri (pronounced as Shivdi) was a small hamlet on the eastern shore of the Parel island, one of the original seven islands of Bombay. Sewri has a fort that dates back to 1770. The Agri-Horticultural Society had established gardens at Sewri, which were acquired in 1865 by Arthur Crawford, then the Municipal Commissioner of Bombay, for building a European cemetery. Large parts of Sewri belong to the Bombay Port Trust and were incorporated into the harbour facilities. In 1996, the mangrove swamps of Sewri were declared a protected ecology. Lesser flamingoes from other parts of India come to these mangroves to breed. They arrive at the mudflats from the months of October to March every year. These mudflats are near the Sewri jetty, which is a 20-minute walk from the railway station.
Sewri Flamingo Point is at a distance of around 1 kilometre from Sewri railway station. The point has large areas of mudflats which are safe habitat for flamingos in winter. The mudflats abound in algae, which attracts flamingos who migrate to India every year between the months of October and March to escape the cold winters.
Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), is one of the environmental NGOs, making efforts to create awareness about this place and its conservation. Flamingo Festival is organized each year by BNHS with exhibitions, book stalls, Bird tattoo stalls, souvenir shops and nature conservation workshops for visitors. They also do occasional tours and nature trails to the jetty and are generally receptive to the idea of enlightening visitors and nature lovers about this place.
How to reach Sewri Jetty?
To reach here, one must get off at the Sewri station on the Harbour Railway line. Jetty is approximately 1 km from Sewri east, and a taxi should reach you there conveniently. Even if you are driving down, Sewri station remains your landmark. You must take the road opposite to Sewri station and the railway crossing in the east. Once on that route, there are petroleum industrial units on both sides. Keep moving straight until you reach a T-junction, from there take right and keep moving straight. The end of that road marks the beginning of Sewri jetty and the mud flats. On your way to the jetty, you will also pass Sewri fort. This fort is not easily noticed since the structure is dilapidated and the location is secluded.
This Year there were no Flamingos spotted on my two visits in the past two months.
Flamingos like all other birds and animals don’t like urbanization and so they will soon stop coming here because of the developmental projects that constantly get approved compromising on nature.

Sewri Fort, Mumbai
The Sewri Fort, also spelled Sewree Fort, is a fort in Mumbai built by the British at Sewri. Built in 1680, fort served as a watch tower, atop a quarried hill overlooking the Mumbai harbour
The fort was built primarily for defence, and embellishments are absent. It is bordered by high stone walls, including an inner ring for added protection. It is landlocked on three sides, and sits atop of sheer cliff of about 60 m (197 ft). The entrance is a stone doorway that leads into a courtyard. To prevent a frontal assault from the main entrance, the inner entrances were placed perpendicular to the main entrances.
Architectural highlights include pentagonal room along with a long domed corridor, and linear vaulted structures.

Secret Mumbai: Finding Flamingos in Sewri & Airoli
The flamingos are back in Mumbai, and i went to spot them in Sewri - not only did i see hundreds of them, but i also discovered a forgotten underbelly of Mumbai - the Dockyards.
Post the Sewri Jetty, i also checked out Bhau Cha Dhakka - which will soon be the docking port for the Mumbai-Goa ferries that will start plying again after 26 years!!
UPDATE (2019): The better spot to view flamingos now, is in Airoli.

Sewri Nhava Sheva Mumbai Trans Harbour Link MTHL MMRDA India's 22 kms Longest Sea Bridge
Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), also known as Sewri-Nhava Sheva Trans Harbour Link, is a proposed 22 km, freeway grade road bridge connecting the Indian city of Mumbai with Navi Mumbai, its satellite city. If completed, it would be the longest sea bridge in India. The bridge will begin in Sewri, South Mumbai and cross Thane Creek north of Elephanta Island and will terminate at Chirle village, near Nhava Sheva. The road will be linked to the Mumbai Pune Expressway in the east, and to the proposed Western Freeway in the west. The sea link will contain a 6 lane highway, which will be 27 meters in width, in addition to edge strip and crash barrier. The project is estimated to cost ₹11000 crore (US$1.8 billion) and is officially estimated to be completed in 2019, although as of 2014, construction has not begun, tendering has not been completed (despite three attempts) and funding remains uncertain. For more details visite
The sea link is expected to reduce commuting time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, and provide direct connectivity to Mumbai Port Trust, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust JNPT and the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport. It will also allow faster travel to Thane, Nashik, Panvel, Pune and southern India and is also expected to boost the economic growth of neighboring Raigad district and raise real estate prices in the region.

Flamingos' Journey From Sea To Mudflats - Sewri, Mumbai
The Flamingos assemble at sea on deep water during the high tide and move towards the shore or mudflats when the tide water starts receding. The video record of the various stages of this journey is from Sewri jetty near the mangroves. Initially the birds started swimming and floating in deep water. When they sense the obstacle and danger in form of a fishing boat, they take off and fly to settle on sea water at a different location and commence their journey after regrouping. Next they start walking in shallow water. After reaching the mudflats, they are constantly pocking in mud for food. Also seen in the video is a Red Billed Gull, a black -- headed Ibis and swarm of unknown small birds.

Bird ( Flamingo ) watching at Sewri bay, Mumbai 12 January 2013
We visited Sewri bay for bird watching at 9 am, 12 January 2013. It is about 10 minutes walk from Sewri railway station. This day was one day after new moon and so low tide was at 6.30 am and high tide was at 12 noon. By the time we reached there, tide has already come up and flamingos were leaving and they were far off. However we could see many birds.Early morning is better for bird watch. After low tide when water rises, birds comes to the shore. Near high tide all birds fly away to safer places. At morning time photography is bit difficult because we have to take photos against sun light. This video is taken using Canon sx 10 digital camera having 20 X zoom. If you go there two or three days after new moon, the atmosphere would be generally clean and pleasant
