Stratford-upon-Avon, a medieval market town in England’s West Midlands, is the 16th-century birthplace of William Shakespeare. Possibly the most famous writer in the English language, Shakespeare is known for his sonnets and plays such as 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Hamlet'. The Royal Shakespeare Company performs his plays in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and adjacent Swan Theatre on the banks of the River Avon.
Stratford upon Avon is a market town and civil parish in Warwickshire, England, on the River Avon, 101 miles (163 km) north west of London, 22 miles (35 km) south east of Birmingham, and 8 miles (13 km) south west of Warwick. Stratford was originally inhabited by Anglo-Saxons and remained a village before lord of the manor, John of Coutances, set out plans to develop it into a town in 1196. In that same year, Stratford was granted a charter from King Richard I to hold a weekly market in the town, giving it its status as a market town. As a result, Stratford experienced an increase in trade and commerce as well as urban expansion.
Stratford upon Avon is a popular tourist destination owing to its status as birthplace of English playwright and poet William Shakespeare, and receives approximately 2.5 million visitors a year. The Royal Shakespeare Company resides in Stratford's Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Stratford is 22 miles (35 km) south-east of Birmingham. It is close to the Cotswolds, with Chipping Campden 10 miles (16 km) to the south. Suburbs and areas of the town include Shottery, Bishopton, Bridgetown, Tiddington, and Old Town.
Stratford is 22 miles (35 km) from the UK's second largest city, Birmingham, and is easily accessible from junction 15 of the M40 motorway. Stratford-upon-Avon railway station has good rail links from Birmingham (Snow Hill station, Moor Street station) and from London, with up to seven direct trains a day from London Marylebone. Stratford-upon-Avon Parkway railway station opened on 19 May 2013 to the north of the town.

Ronnie Mulryne at the Guildhall, Stratford upon Avon
This film includes a selection of extracts from a guided tour of the Guildhall in Stratford of Avon given by Professor Ronnie Mulryne. Originally recorded by film-maker James Willetts in 2015-2016, it has been re-edited as a tribute to Professor Mulryne, who died on 28th January 2019.
Professor Mulryne demonstrates that the Guildhall served as the headquarters of the religious Guild of the Holy Cross and that Shakespeare was at school in the same building. His schoolroom, which has been recreated, is directly above the priest’s chapel. He was at school from about 1571 to 1579, a regular period of schooling in those days. Professor Mulryne explains how Shakespeare was inspired to become a playwright in the schoolroom – part of the curriculum were Latin plays by authors such as Plautus and Terence, which the boys performed.
In the room next to the school room, top-level professional players from London and elsewhere came and played on more than 30 occasions while Shakespeare lived in Stratford. The whole story, schoolroom and professional players, hangs together.
Professor Mulryne, Professor Emeritus at the University of Warwick, was the leading expert on the history of Stratford-upon-Avon’s Guildhall. He was editor of 'The Guild and Guild Buildings of Shakespeare’s Stratford' which was published in 2010. He was instrumental in securing the £1.7m Heritage Lottery Funding to restore the Guildhall and open it to the public.
James Ronald Mulryne was born in Belfast on 24th May 1937 and received his early education there. He took his B.A. and Ph.D at Cambridge University and subsequently lectured at the Universities of Birmingham (Shakespeare Institute), Edinburgh and Warwick, where he was Professor of English and Pro-Vice-Chancellor.
As former Director of the Centre for the Study of the Renaissance at Warwick University, he developed and transformed the University’s research base in the European Renaissance and left behind him an important and challenging legacy.
In Stratford he has been a Trustee of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, a Governor of the RSC, and Chairman of Governors at King Edward VI School. At Holy Trinity Church he has been involved in the leadership of services, a church warden, a Chair of the Friends of Shakespeare's Church and a President of the Choral Society, as well as in the restoration of the Becket Chapel and the creation and development of St Peter's Chapel.
Dr Margaret Shewring, a former colleague at Warwick University, writes, His energy, generosity in encouraging others and love of theatre, music, poetry, architecture and history have been an inspiration to many. He will be greatly missed.

The official opening of Shakespeare's school
Every building tells a story - Dr Kate Giles
When archaeologist and medieval Guildhall specialist Kate Giles was asked to do a historical stock take by William Shakespeare’s old school at Stratford-upon-Avon, it marked the start of a remarkable journey.
An interdisciplinary and collaborative project, the research combines cutting edge building surveys, scientific dating and historical research with the latest digital 3D modeling. The work has inspired a £1.4 million Heritage Lottery Funded project opening up access to the Guildhall complex, and enabling a distinctive part of Shakespeare’s cultural legacy to be better understood, interpreted and conserved for future generations.
This lecture was given at YorkTalks 2016. Styled on the highly successful TED Talks lecture series, YorkTalks features short, accessible 15-minute presentations on some of our most innovative and thought-provoking research.
