Chinese variety art at Shanghai Grand Theatre.
See map:
The Shanghai Grand Theatre is one of the largest and best-equipped automatic stages in the world and it is a landmark for the city Shanghai.
Since the theatre opened on August 27, 1998, it has staged over 6,000 performances of operas, musicals, ballets, symphonies, chamber music concerts, spoken dramas and various Chinese operas.
It is the home of the Shanghai Opera House Company; however, the title Shanghai Opera House officially applies to only the performing company and not to the building.
- Chinese variety art refers to a wide range of acrobatic acts, balancing acts and other demonstrations of physical skill traditionally performed by a troupe in China. Many of these acts have a long history in China and are still performed today.

Shanghai Grand Opera House by Snøhetta
Following an international design competition, Snøhetta has been commissioned to design the Shanghai Grand Opera House in Shanghai, China. The project aims to attract a broad audience through offering both traditional and Chinese opera performances, classical concerts and more experimental performances that will attract a younger audience. Snøhetta has developed the architectural, landscape, interior, and graphic design for the Opera, and the project will be undertaken in partnership with Shanghai-based architects ECADI.
The new Opera House is an important part of a new urban master plan for Shanghai that aims to place the city at the forefront of the globe, economically, scientifically, and culturally. The Opera House is expected to become one of the major cultural landmarks of Shanghai – the country’s 13th Five-Year Plan names it as the most important initiative to strengthen Shanghai’s cultural and global influence.
The Shanghai Grand Opera House will be a world class venue, placing the visitor at the center of the stage. Through its aesthetics, functionality, as well as its cultural and ecological ambition, the Opera House will be an accessible canvas for global visitors, local citizens, and artists to fill with life and culture.

People's Square Shanghai & The Bund Shanghai China
People's square is a spectacular space in the heart of the city. It is a garden-type open space surrounded by buildings and facilities for administration, cultural activities, transportation and commerce
Throughout Shanghai’s short history, People’s Square has been a nucleus of culture and activity.
The Bund is a mile-long stretch of waterfront promenade along the Huangpu River. To the west of this stretch stand 52 buildings of various architectural styles, including Gothic, baroque, and neoclassical styles. It is often referred to as the museum of buildings.Due to its centrality and proximity to the Bund, the area draws tourists from all over the world to its hectic streets.

I filmed this during the troupe's rehearsal at the Shanghai Opera House in March of 2009. The girls never seemed to stop coming out from behind the curtain. A fantastic dance. Enjoy!

CHINA: SHANGHAI: NEW OPERA THEATRE NEARS COMPLETION
Mandarin/Eng/Nat
The skyline of the Chinese city of Shanghai is being transformed by a series of prestigious building developments aimed at showcasing the city's new confidence.
Following a new museum devoted to Chinese art which opened last year, a stunning new Opera Theatre costing more than 120 (m) million U-S dollars is nearing completion.
But it is not an entirely Chinese achievement, as architects and engineers from around the world have been involved.
It has been designed by the French, build by the Chinese, furnished by the Canadians and glazed by the Germans.
The new developments are part of an effort by the Shanghai municipality to soften the atmosphere of the city.
Shanghai is better known as a financial centre than a cultural one.
Although that is unlikely to change, a number of high profile projects are creating a new look for the city.
The modern structure of the Opera Theatre stands in contrast to the old colonial buildings built at the turn of the century.
But the theatre is not an entirely Chinese achievement.
The architect was a French man, a German company was responsible for the glasswork and a Canadian company for the interior design.
They have all co-operated with Chinese engineers to create the eye catching new theatre.
One of the biggest challenges the team faced was supporting the roof which is made of a single piece of metal.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
The roof is a huge iron frame weighing more than 6-thousand tonnes. It would have been difficult to assemble it on the top so we decided to put it together on the ground and then lift it up. It worked but it took us 21 hours alone to elevate it to 40 metres high. But it was successful.
SUPER CAPTION: Zhu Jialin, Deputy General Engineer, Shanghai Grand Theatre
The building includes some original features.
They include heat reducing metallic quadrangles on the glass which are designed to deflect heat and give opera goers some relief from the hot Shanghai summers.
But more traditional materials dominate the building, with marble covering the walls and floor.
This guard wears covers on his shoes to prevent damage to the fragile surface.
Architects who have visited the building have been impressed with the design.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I think the strength of this project is tremendous transparency for the city and I wish I could see it in the evening when it is all lit up. I also like this project because it is low rise and very sculptural in a city which is becoming high rise and a little bit hard so it gives a bit of softening to the city with a park in front and it has a more human scale than some of the towers around us. I think this project will be a wonderful addition to Shanghai and its people.
SUPER CAPTION: Ann R. Chaintreuil, President, US National Council of Architectural Registration Board
When completed the theatre will seat more than 18-hundred people on the ground floor with more on the three balconies.
The supports for the vast main stage are still being constructed.
The whole project has cost the Shanghai municipality one (b) billion yuan (more than 120 (m) million U-S dollars), and has taken nearly 4 years to complete.
Projects like this one, and the nearby museum, are intended to establish Shanghai as an international cultural centre for the next millennium.

50 Years of Kynar 500® - Shanghai Grand Theatre
Shanghai Grand Theatre is a landmark building in the city of Shanghai, China. Architects wanted the theater “to look like a transparent crystal palace” and capture both the Eastern Chinese architectural soul and the modern Western influence. To protect this architectural stage, the building was coated with PPG Industries’ Duranar® coatings with Kynar 500® resin. Kynar 500® resin-based coatings offer long-term durability and color retention under extreme conditions. The coatings protect the brilliant white roof against humidity, intense sunlight, industrial pollutants and soiling, making sure the building remains an international landmark for decades to come.
Check back monthly for a new featured building and visit us at Kynar500.com to see how we’re celebrating throughout the year. #kynar500
