Jade Buddha Temple in Shanghai, China
In 1882, a temple was founded at this location to house two rare jade Buddha statues brought to Shanghai from Burma. While the temple was destroyed in 1911 during the revolution that overthrew the Qing Dynasty, the statues were saved. A new temple, as seen today, was rebuilt from 1918 through 1928. Although the history of the temple is short, its striking classical architectural style are unique, especially in a modern city such as Shanghai.

Longhua tempel Shanghai
The Longhua Temple (Chinese: 龙华寺; pinyin: Lónghúa Sì, literally Lustre of the Dragon Temple) is a Buddhist Temple dedicated to the Maitreya Buddha located in Shanghai, China. Although most of the present-day buildings date from later reconstructions, the temple preserves the architectural design of a Song Dynasty monastery of the Buddhist Chan sect. It is the largest, most authentic and complete ancient temple complex in the city of Shanghai. (source: Wikipedia)

Jade Buddha Temple - Shanghai - China
During the reign of the Guangxu Emperor (1871–1908) in the Qing dynasty, Huigen, a Buddhist monk, went on a pilgrimage to Tibet. He visited Myanmar (also known as Burma) after leaving Tibet. While there, Chen Jun-Pu, an overseas Chinese resident in Myanmar, donated five jade Buddha statues to Huigen, who transported two of them back to Shanghai. Here, Huigen had a temple built in 1882 with donated funds, where he placed the two jade Buddha statues. Shortly after the construction of the temple, the Buddhist monk passed away.
In 1911, during the Chinese Revolution, the original temple was occupied and damaged by the rebels. The temple, as well as the jade statues, were moved to a new location.
A few years later, in 1918, a Buddhist monk by the name of Kechen later had a new temple built on land donated by a member of the Qing imperial court, Sheng Xuanhuai. The construction took ten years, and completed in 1928.
In the 1960's, during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, the temple faced difficult times and the monks had to make a living by selling handicrafts. In 1983, the Shanghai Buddhist Association used the temple as the headquarters of The Shanghai Institute of Buddhism.
2018 China: Shanghai - Jade Buddha Temple
In the western part of Shanghai, a very modern and flourishing city, there is a venerable and famous Buddhist temple, Jade Buddha Temple. In 1882, an old temple was built to keep two jade Buddha statues which had been brought from Burma by a monk named Huigen. The temple was destroyed during the revolution that overthrew the Qing Dynasty. Fortunately the statues were saved and a new temple was built on the present site in 1928. It was named the Jade Buddha Temple.
The two precious jade Buddhist statues are not only rare cultural relics but also porcelain artworks. Both the Sitting Buddha and the Recumbent Buddha are carved with whole white jade. The sparkling and crystal-clear white jade gives the Buddhas the beauty of sanctity and make them more vivid. The Sitting Buddha is 190 centimeters high and encrusted by the agate and the emerald, portraying the Buddha at the moment of his meditation and enlightenment. The Recumbent Buddha is 96 centimeters long, lying on the right side with the right hand supporting the head and the left hand placing on the left leg, this shape is called the 'lucky repose'. The sedate face shows the peaceful mood of Sakyamuni when he left this world. In the temple there is also another Recumbent Buddha which is four meters long and was brought from Singapore by the tenth abbot of the temple in 1989. Furthermore there are many other ancient paintings and Buddhist scriptures distributed in the different halls here.
Although the history of the Jade Buddha Temple is not very long, the old-time and classical architectural style makes it unique and inimitable in this modern city. Devajara Hall, Mahavira Hall and the Jade Buddha Tower make up the main structure of the temple and at sides are the Kwan-yin Dian Hall, the Amitabha Dian Hall, the Zen Tang Hall, the Dining-Room and the Recumbent Buddha Hall. The Sitting Buddha is in the Jade Buddha Tower and the Recumbent Buddhas are in the Recumbent Buddha Hall. More than 7,000 Dazang sutras are kept in the Jade Buddha Tower; these are all the inestimable culture relics.
The Jade Buddha Temple is a good place to go whether you are a Buddhist or not, the peaceful and transcendent atmosphere adds a kind of richness to our busy modern society.

Shanghai Tower (632 meters) - Highest observation deck 2nd Tallest Skyscraper in the World
Shanghai (上海), China.
The Shanghai Tower (in Chinese: 上海中心大厦) is situated in the heart of Lujiazui and it's China's tallest building. It's the second tallest skyscraper in the world just after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
It's designed with a curve that twists and rises, standing at a total height of 632 meters.
The Shanghai Tower elevator is the fastest in the world traveling at 18-20.5 m/s (1230 m/min, 73.8 km/h).
Inside you can reach the observation deck at the 118th floor within 55 seconds.
We visited the observatories at the 118th floor (546 meters) and 119th floor (552 meters) where we enjoyed an amazing 360-degree view of Shanghai. We went there at around 4pm and stayed there for a couple of hours so we could enjoy both the spectacular view of sunset and the stunning view at night of the city.
From the Shanghai Tower we could see the top the other tallest skyscrapers of the Shanghai Skyline:
- The Shanghai World Financial Center (492 meters)
- The Oriental Pearl Tower (470 meters)
- The Jin Mao Tower (421 meters)
A new observatory at the 125th-126th floors is to be opened. This observatory is going to surpass the current one in Dubai becoming the highest observatory in the world. The 125/126F will be the highest accessible floor in the tower with an exhibition about the damping system, then there will be the Eye of Shanghai art installation and the 4D music.
The ticket for the Top of the Shanghai Tower cost me RMB 180 ($27 - €23).
