After 24 years of development, Pudong has become the engine of economic and social development of Shanghai. Pudong is situated on the east coast of the Huangpu River of Shanghai, and sits at the intersection of China's coastal belt for opening-up and the Yangtze River estuary. It is backed up by the Yangtze River Delta urban megalopolis and faces the boundless Pacific. Its coastline is 115 kilometers long.
Famous religious sites in Pudong include Qinciyang Temple, Chaoyin Nunnery, Fuquan Temple, Nanshan Temple and the Church of our Lady of Lourdes. The well-known memorial places include the old residence of Zhang Wentian, the old residence of Huang Yanpei and the cemetery of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom martyrs.

Major festival activities that are well-attended in the city are the Shanghai Peach Blossom Festival and International Music Fireworks Festival.
