Chinese STREET FOOD Breakfast Tour in Hangzhou + BULLET TRAIN to Shanghai | Hangzhou, China
My final day in China started off in the city of Hangzhou, where I set off early that morning to find a delicious Hangzhou-style breakfast! I couldn’t wait to fill up on more amazing, local food before I had to leave for Shanghai!
My street food search began in the old town near Hefang Street, a pedestrian street where you can find tons of restaurants. I found a Middle Eastern restaurant where they were making kulcha, a type of flatbread that I had tried in Amritsar, India!
This kulcha contained black sesame seeds, spring onions, and more! It was very thin and crispy and had a light and airy texture. The black sesame was very unique and almost gave it a chocolatey flavor! And because Hangzhou is the green tea capital of China, I had to have some! The tea and kulcha together cost 6 Yuan/$0.87 USD!
Then I found another spot selling thick, fluffy, biscuit-like cake. It was very dense and contained egg, onion, and maybe custard. It was crispy on the bottom and very sweet!
Then I headed over to one of my favorite spots to get a tofu sandwich. On the way, I passed souvenir shops, tea places, and a pharmacy. There are jerky kiosks on the street as well as shoe stores and a McDonald’s. The street is called Royal Street and it has an ancient stream going down the middle of it!
I passed through the gate, which served as the entrance to the old town when Hangzhou was the capital of China.
I ordered a thin crepe with spring onions and tofu. It was almost like a panini and was so crispy and flavorful! The spicy sauce provided a nice contrast to the sweet sauce. I was in tofu heaven!
I also ordered some wonton soup. They were almost like the slippery wontons I’d had a couple of days earlier. There’s a dense piece of pork in the middle, but the wonton wrapping around it slips right down your throat. The best thing about this place is that there were only locals there. I was the only Westerner! My crepe and wonton soup came to just 15 Yuan/$2.18 USD.
After that, I headed back to the gate and went inside, where there is a little museum with paintings and a diorama that shows what Hangzhou looked like when it was the capital of China. It was the biggest city in the world at one point and even amazed Marco Polo!
Then I headed back to my apartment, grabbed my bags, and headed to the train station. I recommend getting to the train station an hour before your train. I was a little behind schedule because I wanted to double- and triple-check that I had everything.
The train station is so big, it looks like an airport! After I got my ticket and passport, I went back upstairs and went through security. The station was super futuristic with lots of shops and restaurants. It felt like I was in a spaceport! There are even arrows on the floor that direct you to drinking water and the bathroom!
The business class lounge was super nice, with lots of snacks and drinks. The ladies there were really friendly! I tried a Chinese drink that turned out to be cold lychee juice! One of the ladies walked me straight to my gate and got me to the front of the line.
I arrived at the platform and boarded my train. This business class was large and had reclining seats with a TV and a tray table. There are thousands of bullet trains that connect Chinese cities. It’s the fastest way to travel; driving between Hangzhou and Shanghai would take 3-5 hours!
It only costs 210 Yuan/about $30 USD for a 45-minute ride. I loved watching the countryside go by. I was given a gift that contains chocolate, raisins, peanuts, biscuits, gummies, and braised beef!
After 45 minutes, we were back at Hongqiao Station in Shanghai!
I hope you enjoyed coming with me on my final street food adventure in China! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food adventures!

Chinese BULLET TRAIN Business Class REVIEW + Chinese Spicy Noodles | Shanghai to Hangzhou
My trip to China in April of 2019 was a whirlwind of travel, incredible culture, fascinating history, amazing sites, and lots of spectacular food. It took me from Shanghai to Suzhou, back to Shanghai for a one-day job with Renault, to Hangzhou, and finally, back to Shanghai yet again. I loved every moment of this trip and am so excited to share it all with you!
After finishing up my one-day job with Renault in Shanghai, I got up on the morning of my eighth full day in China excited for my journey to the city of Hangzhou, where I’d spend my final two days in the country!
I would have to catch the bullet train to Hangzhou, which is famous for its West Lake, which has over 1,000 years of history. The ride takes 45 minutes and over 130 trains connect the two cities. I’d be riding Business Class, which costs 210 Yuan, or roughly $30.56. I highly recommend booking your ticket online, which saves a lot of time and prevents you from having to deal with sold-out trains, which are common in China!
I arrived at Hongqiao Station about 80 minutes before my train. You have to have your passport ready if you’re a foreigner. I headed through and went right, where you’ll see a lot of lines for tickets. It’s usually crazy busy here, so be prepared for that! There were easily 50,000 people there! Luckily, I had a picture of my reservation to show the teller.
After I got my ticket, I headed off to look for some breakfast. There was lots of fast food available, but I only wanted to eat Chinese food in China. There were lots of restaurants on the third level. I went with a restaurant called Bai Shi Jia, where I ordered soup noodles with spicy meat for 32 Yuan/roughly $4.66.
My noodles looked so good! I could see and smell the spice in it. I also had some mushrooms on the side.
I started with a sip of the broth, which was really spicy! Then I mixed everything together and dug in. I loved the spice! It wasn’t too bad, heat-wise. Remember, it’s considered good etiquette here to slurp your noodles! They were so hot, I was starting to break out into a sweat!
The noodles contained a lot of beef. It would really give me a lot of energy for the day. Then I went with some of the mushrooms to cleanse my palate and get rid of some of the heat in my mouth!
With 20 minutes until my train, I headed back down to my gate. The station is huge and is so busy. It’s overwhelming and there aren’t many people who can help you if you get lost or are unsure of where to go because most people in China don’t speak English. Instead, they usually speak their native language and Mandarin.
I headed through my gate and down to the platform. Once it arrived, I had only two minutes to board before it left.
Business Class was at the end of the train. It was super spacious with 5 seats. The seats are made of leather and have a TV attached to them as well as a tray. They give you snacks and water. The snacks include chocolate and biscuits. You can also extend and recline your seat if you want. It feels like a spaceship! I had to be quiet, though, because the other passengers in my car were sleeping.
After 45 minutes, I arrived in Hangzhou! I had 2 minutes to disembark because the train had other stops to make. I was planning on catching a Didi, which is the Chinese version of Uber, but I was told it was too complex and too hard to find, so I decided to get a taxi instead. The queue for the taxis was super long but it moved fast.
I showed my taxi driver my Airbnb address and then we were off!
I hope you enjoyed coming with me to Hangzhou! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food adventures!

Having lived in Hangzhou for 5 months while a student at Zhejiang University, I took it upon myself to create a video exploring life in Hangzhou. The aim of this is to provide prospective travellers to the city on some cool sites (like the famous West Lake), transport tips and places to grab food. Also a great opportunity to have a word with the local people in Chinese (with subtitles). I take the opportunity to taste the infamous 'Stinky Tofu'.
Hangzhou, it's glorious West Lake (Xihu) and the surrounding scenery and city, is truly a sight to behold!

China Trip Part 1: Shanghai & Hangzhou
We visited our families back from China! Here are some memories we made at Shanghai and Hangzhou. Enjoy!
Hangzhou to Shanghai one day trip
Hangzhou & Wuzhen | West Lake | Venice of China
My first solo trip in China WOOHOO achievement unlocked!
A short episode in my trip:
When I arrived at Hangzhou, I realized my backpack had been locked with a TSA lock that has a different combination which I kinda accidentally reset while fumbling with the lock on the train. I felt so lost and helpless because everything that I need is in my backpack! I was on the brink of cutting open my backpack, but I decided to calm down (after crying lol) and Baidu (equivalent to Google) about it. I tried whatever the people online have suggested.
Apparently, when you accidentally changed the passcode, the new passcode should not differ much from your original. So you just have to be patient and trial and error. (For example, your original is 123, so you have to try 133, 223, 124, 122 etc...) I can't remember how many times I did this to finally open that damn lock but I know I was praying so hard and when it got unlocked I cried tears of joy HAHAHA
Hangzhou was much colder than Shanghai at that time (it was raining as well) so I think the cold weather and the weight of my backpack (super heavy of course, because I tend to pack in things that I don't need) kinda made me super emotional and vulnerable. I had a hard time locating my hotel as well because, duh, I have a bad sense of direction (road idiot 路痴 I'd call myself).
Initially, I did not want to go to my hotel first, I wanted to tour West Lake immediately because I deliberately chose to arrive early in HZ so that I can fully utilize all the time I have in my hands. However, due to the cold and lack of sleep the previous night, eventually I had to book a cab and go back to my hotel to rest because I felt so unwell. I was freezing and shaking already! My bf was so worried, he flooded me with angry voice messages, (haha) demanding me to rest immediately because that was what I needed the most at that time. I have to rest well before I can carry on with the rest of my solo trip. I listened to him, slept for about 2 hours and woke up feeling recharged!
I think it's very important to remember that you can always visit somewhere twice or even thrice, allow yourself to be in the best state of health and mind first before travelling. This is so that you can enjoy and feel things at the fullest! :)
China high speed train: Shanghai to Hangzhou
Booked my ticket from super easy with detail instructions on how to pick up tickets. Remember most cities in China has more than one train stations, please make sure you book the right station(s). For this one hour trip, I booked first class and the seat was great and they served snacks.
Beautiful China: A tour of Suzhou, Wuxi, and Hangzhou
A look at a more traditional side of china our tour took us to visit 3 cities: Suzhou, wuxi and Hangzhou. Where we visited their traditional houses and gardens from different time periods. We also visited factories that made some of china’s sought after art forms and resources.
Thanks for watching XOXO
