Shankaracharya temple is a beautiful Shiva temple situated at a height of 1100 feet on a picturesque location on the Gopadari Hill on the South East of Srinagar. Home to Shankaracharya when he visited Srinagar, it was renamed by King Lalitaditya as Shankaracharya Temple in the sixth century. The temple became more accessible after the Dogra ruler, Maharaja Gulab Singh, constructed the stairs. It is believed to be the oldest shrine in Kashmir.

Shankarajayanti is the birthday of adi guru Shankaracharya who was the pioneer on advaita philosophy. He was born in Kerala 2000 years back. The saint travelled thousands of km from Kerla came to Kashmir to do meditation at Shankaracharya hill Srinagar to spread the message of peace to humanity. On may 9 Shankarajayanti several thousands of people came to pray for the nation in remembrance of adi guru Shankaracharya. Swami vishwathmananda SARASWATI from sunderbani ashram came along with hundreds of his followers and performed Abhishek for world peace. Several Purohit came from Kanchi mutt from Tamilnadu and performed homa, havan and Yagna for peace in the country. Ramakrishna mission Srinagar kept book stall on the teaching of rama Krishna paramahamsa to spread his message of universal brotherhood. Several displaced kashmiri Pandits led by ravinder pandita also came to pray for their peaceful return to tge valley and they also prayed for the opening of Sharada Peeth in POK. The program was organised by Local business man Vidhu SHARMA who is staunch devotee of Shankaracharya. Program was given wide publicity, coordinated among the santh samaj, national leaders by team one India strong india led by mentor Bellur Laxminarayana and Paneendra kumar from Bangalore who are driving this mission from past six years. Every year several people from different parts of the country come to Srinagar on Shankarajayanti to pray for One India Strong India. This year on may 11 2016 J&K DY CM Dr nirmal singh came to Shankaracharya hill srinagar to be part of shankarajayanti celebration. Kanchi mutt take the lead in performing various pujas for world peace. Dr Nirmal Singh was blessed by the pandits. With there blessing the state of Jammu and Kashmir will prosper . Aerial view of Dal Lake in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The fascinating, magnificent view of Dal Lake with calm water can be seen.The fascinating Dal Lake is divided into two smaller ones the Lokut (small) and Bod (big) Dal.Dal Lake is, initially, one of the most confusing parts of Srinagar for it is not really one lake at all, but three.
As we go on this serene aerial journey our eyes fall on the beautifully well-decorated Shikaras and houseboats. Tourists on these colourful Shikaras are seen to enjoy the gorgeous view of the lake. One side of the lake is deeply moored with the house boats. These houseboats look so firmly moored they could almost be islands and hotels on islands which look like they could simply float away.
Dal Lake is a maze of intricate waterways and channels.There are three islands in the lake; three real islands anyway, there are other sorts of islands joined by causeways. Around the lake are many of Srinagar's most interesting sights, in particular, the pleasant Mughal gardens. It's also flanked by hills, particularly along its east bank. The Shankaracharya hill provides a very fine view over the lake.
The lake is probably at its most beautiful when the lotus flowers bloom in July and August. The floating gardens, known as Rad in Kashmiri, are one of the stranger aspects of Dal Lake. They're composed of matted vegetation and earth, which are cut away from the lake bottom and towed to a convenient location where they are moored.
The waters of Dal Lake are amazingly clear. Nevertheless, one is advised not to go swimming in the lake although the swimming houseboats, equipped with diving boards and chutes, are moored in a deeper part of the lake, 'upstream' from the concentration of houseboats. Swimming here can be quite refreshing, especially on a hot afternoon.
