Khajuraho has been recognized by UNESCO as a place of world heritage on account of its magnificent temples.The temples of Khajuraho are generally divided into three groups: Western, Eastern and Southern. The Eastern group mainly consisting of Jain temples.There are total 34 Jain Temples. But from architectural point of view the Parshwanath, the Adinath and the Shantinath temples are relatively more important and noteworthy. Shri 1008 Lord Shantinath temple is the main temple with 14 ft. high colossus in the standing posture, the highest idol of all idols (deity images) of Khajuraho. According to an inscription on it, it is installed in Vikrama-Samvat 1085 (1028 AD). This temple is an assemblage of the fragmnets, pillars and images from older temples and is built around a courtyard. This temple also contains a picture-gallery, which exhibits photos of prominent Jain monuments of India. The Parshwanath temple is famous in the world as it contains some of the most excellent sculptures of Khajuraho e.g. figures of Lakshmi-Narain, Balram-Reoti, eight Dikpalas (i.e. Indra, Agni, Yama, Nirriti, Varuna, Vayu, Kuber and Isan), Ambika, Kamdev Rati, Ram-Sita along with Hanuman. This temple is also privileged to possess the best art pieces of Sura- Sundaris (Divine Nymphs) in various attractive postures. The temple is rectangular in shape with few star - like projections that add so much variety to the other temples of this period. The Parshwanath Temple has a porch on the east side that leads into the mandap and sanctum. There is also a projection on the west side, apparently added later, containing a small shrine. Third is the Adinath temple located on the right of the Parshwanath, is a beautiful - though small shrine. It is noted for its simple but well- ornamented 'Shikhar' (spire) and the three bands of sculptures on its semi-circular outer wall containing figures of Gandharvas and Kinnars and Vidyadharas, various Yakshas and Apsaras. The figures of Govadan (Gomukh) - the attendant Yaksha of Lord Risabhadev have been conspicuously carved-out. This temple has got the rare sculptures of sixteen Digambar Jain Vidyadevis with their 'Vahanas' (vehicles) and 'Ayudhas' (weapons) and the necessary 'Parikar' (background).
Shantinath Temple Khajuraho - A Famous Jain Temple
Shantinath Temple, a Jain temple in Khajuraho, was constructed around 1028 AD. Khajuraho is a famous historic town in the Chhatarpur district in MP. The temple lures Diagmber Jain pilgrims and devotees all the year round. There is a Dharamshala also near the temple which provides fine lodging. People who worship here with full faith and devotion get their desires fulfilled.
Famous for the 14 feet high idol of 16th Jain Tirthankar, Adinath, in the standing posture, this temple has great religious significance. This massive idol was installed in the Vikrama Samvat 1085. The idol is believed to possess supernatural powers. According to one incident that occurred about 400 years ago, some invaders came to break the idol. As they made their first move by applying the hammer on a finger of the idol, milk started pouring out of it. At the same time, a dense flock of honey bees came out and attacked the invaders who ran away from there hurriedly. These and many other such incidences prove the miraculous powers of the idol.
At the corners of the temple, there are some small side chapels. The walls of the temple are creamy yellow. Unlike the Hindu Temples, this temple is roofed only around the edges and open from the center portion. An important place with great religious significance, this Shantinath temple is a must see on your Khajuraho trip.
Shantinath Temple Khajuraho -- A Sanctified Space
Shantinath Temple is a Jain Temple which is located in Khajuraho. Khajuraho is a historical town in the Chhatarpur District of Madhya Pradesh. The temple is famous for a 4 and a ½ meter high statue of the Jain Tirthankar, Lord Adinath. The idol depicts the lord in a standing posture. It is believed that the statue was constructed in 1028 AD.
All through the year, there is an inflow of Digamber Jain pilgrims to this sacred Jain shrine. Accommodation is also not a problem for tourists coming here as the Dharamshala near the temple provides good lodging facilities. This Shantinath temple is quite an important place for the Jain devotees. The temple is a unique example of great religious harmony and sanctified spirit of devotees displayed in the highest manner.
The massive idol for which the temple is famous for is believed to have miraculous powers. According to one known incident in the past, around 400 years ago, some invaders came to break the idol. As they applied the hammer to the little finger, milk started flowing out. Then honey -bees came out and attacked the invaders. The invaders ran after seeing the dense flock of the honey -bees. Owing to this and several other such incidences, faith of people has been augmented here. It is also believed that the desires of devotees coming here with a pure heart are fulfilled after they recite their prayers.

The most famous of the Jain temples in the fort is the Shantinath temple, which was built before 862 AD. A Image of Bhagwan Shantinath (height of the figure 3.73mt.) is standing inside the sanctum.The shape of this idol, in this temple is based on religious and ethical background. Thousands of Jain sculptures are seen embedded in both sides of the walls surrounding the complex. A special style of Gandhar facsimile can be found on Jain idols.
The Parshvanatha jain temple (Khajuraho - India)

Parshvanatha temple (IAST: Pārśvanātha Mandir) is a 10th-century Jain temple at Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh, India. It is now dedicated to Parshvanatha, although it was probably built as an Adinatha shrine during the Chandela period. Despite the temple's Jain affiliation, its exterior walls feature Vaishnavaite themes. The entrance has an inscription with a most-perfect magic square. It is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with other temples in the Khajuraho Group of Monuments.

Khajuraho, India: The Eastern Group of Jain Temples
Once again, I apologize for consistently mispronouncing Khajuraho - kept putting a Khoo in it. What can I say...duh.
The Eastern Temple group is small and only two Jain Temples make it worth visiting. Parshvanatha Temple, built between 950-970 AD with beautiful sculptures on its exterior and Adinatha Temple, names for the first Jain Tirthankara,Adinatha. Some of the other temples are active while still more are in deplorable shape. It won't take you long to visit this area and from here, it was on to Orchha, the once capital of the Bundela Kings, One of the most powerful kingdoms in Central India.
Adinath Temple Khajuraho (Part 1)
As the name suggests, Adinath temple in Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh is dedicated to Adinath the Jain saint. This is the last of Jain temples built around here. The temple is magnificently decorated with different sculpted figures including those of yakshis.
The Adinath temple is situated adjacent to the Parshvanatha Temple, which is the largest of all the Jain temples in Khajuraho. This Adinath temple has been partly repaired over the centuries. This temple is quite similar to the Hindu temples in Khajuraho. Though a Jain temple, it looks more or less like a Hindu temple owing to its architecture and designing. A black image inside the temple gives the indication of it being a Jain temple. The temple has very fine carvings on its 3 bands of sculptures.
Adinath temple is towards the north of the largest Jain temple, the Parshvanatha temple. It is a small temple; its 'shikhar' is simple with a graceful and elegant auspicious pitcher on the top of it. The temple's sanctum is simple as well and it seems that the altar had been built at some time later than the construction of the temple. The roof is constructed beautifully with lotus like stone, which adds to the beauty of the sanctum sanctorum.

Khajuraho is located in the Bundelkhand district of Madhya Pradesh. In Khajuraho, Jains people mostly inhabited the eastern parts of the town. They built a number of Jains temples there some of which are still present.
Though there are nearly 31 Jains Temples in Khajuraho, some of the chief ones are the Adinath Temple, the Parshvantaha Temple and the Shantinath Temple. Almost all the Jains Temples are presently encloses within a large compound wall which was constructed in the early twentieth century. Ghantai Temple is an exception.

Journeys in India: Khajuraho and Varanasi
Religion plays such an important part of India’s past and present that it is integral to its culture. But it is the diversity of religion that is most impressive in this massive country. There are huge populations of Muslims and Hindus. The majority of Sikhs, Jains and Parsis live here as well and there are large minorities of Christians and Buddhists. Just about every sect you can think of is here, but the core and majority is Hindu. It is to two of this holy places in Hinduism and Jainism that we venture today, but that’s not all. We will also visit one of the birth places of Buddhism as well. So join us today as we visit Central India—Land of Pilgrimages.
We will start our visit in one of the most beautiful and probably controversial UNESCO religious sites in the world—Khajuraho.
These mostly non-erotic statues are located on a series of temples near the present day city of Khajuraho in the state of Madhya Pradesh in north central India. It is easily reached by air with daily flights from Delhi, Varanasi and Mumbai.
The temples are quite impressive. Built between the 10th and 11th centuries by the Chandela dynasty of Central India, but they were he religious core of the time. With the fall of the dynasty in the 1200’s, the temples were abandoned and hidden under dense palm forests. The name Khajuraho is derived from Khajur—the Hindi word for palm.
The temples were rediscovered by British army engineer TS Burt centuries later, but by then only a quarter of the original temples still existed. But this was still left 22 unbelievably carved temples—some Hindu and some Jain to marvel at today.
The temples are open to the public—many restored to fully appreciate their architectural and artistic detail, for instance, on the Shiva Temple, there are over 500 different hair styles on the statues. These exquisite carvings depict the growth and maturity of women. This is one of the erotic temples.
Khajuraho was made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986. That means the site is so important that it should be protected by the world for all of mankind. But of course it is the womankind that is most predominately featured.
The temples are grouped into three geographic divisions: western, eastern and southern. Made primarily of sandstone on granite bases, they were held together not by mortar but joints and gravity. Many of the massive columns were carved out of huge stones weighing over 20 tons. The region around Khajuraho is rich in strong but carvable sandstone which lent itself to the incredible work done on the temples. Many historians and architects have called the carvings the best in India and maybe the world.
Any complex this large has many secrets and mysteries—Khajuraho is no exception. In front of the western Hindu Lakshmi Temple is a statue of a lion eating a person. It is not there to intimidate or frighten would be pilgrims, it is in fact the symbol of the Chandella Kings who built the temple. Ok, so maybe the kings picked it as a symbol to intimidate and frighten but that is another story.
The eastern temples are Jain temples. Jain is a religion that you might say is a reformed Hinduism. It was begun in the 6th century BC as a counter to strict orthodox Brahmanism. Jains also believe in open mindedness to others beliefs and ideas. Though the Jain’s lifestyle—vegetarianism and nonviolence-- may seem hard for some to imagine, the ideas of world peace and tolerance are not just catch phrases but everyday actions. As one stark reminder of their beliefs, no one wearing leather may enter their temples….so if you plan to enter a Jain sanctuary, stick to cotton, polyester and plastic.

Southern Group of Temples, Khajuraho
Built in AD 1100, the Chaturbhuj Temple is also known as the Jatakari Temple and is counted amongst the Southern Group of Temples in Khajuraho. The shrine stands 3 kilometres away from the Eastern Group in the Jatakari Village and is popular for its impressive architecture. It has an entrance porch, sanctum without ambulatory, mandapa and vestibule.
This temple is one-of-its-kind in the whole complex as it is the only shrine without any erotic carvings on the walls. Dedicated to the Hindu Lord Vishnu, the shrine houses a 9 feet tall idol in His Chaturbhuj form (with four arms). This is the reason why the temple has been named as the Chaturbhuj Temple.
