Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls | Connecting Point | Sept. 10, 2018
Built as a trolley bridge in 1908, the bridge that spans the Deerfield River between the towns of Shelburne Falls and Buckland was converted to the Bridge of Flowers in 1929 after the railway went out of business. In 1983, it was completely renovated, at a cost of a half-million dollars, under the expertise of a local horticulturalist and several volunteers. The Bridge of Flowers blooms annually from April to October, Connecting Point’s Dave Fraser visited the Bridge during its peak season and brings us the story.
Day 2 Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts
Bridge of Flowers Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts
On August 28, 2011, rain runoff from Hurricane Irene (at that point a tropical storm) flooded the Deerfield River and engulfed the Bridge of Flowers. This video was filmed weeks before that event. The Bridge of Flowers is a garden of flowers that covers the bridge in the small town of Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, free and open every day from April 1 until October 30. Enjoy this video stroll across the Bridge.
Antoinette Burnham came up with the idea of transforming the bridge into a garden
You too can enjoy the Bridge of Flowers from Bulb Season, to Dahlia Season and every bloom season in between. Thousands of bulbs, perennials, annuals and flowering shrubs come into bloom over the course of the year.
Sit in the sun on the Buckland side surrounded by bright plantings before you even step foot on the Bridge. Pause for a few moments in the middle of the Bridge to take in views of the river and flowers, continue on and then enter the cool shade of the Shelburne side where you can enjoy the Wishing Stone Spring.

Titled: Shelburne Falls The Town of Tumbling Water
Shelburne Falls is not a town, but a village contained within two towns Buckland and Shelburne. It is located in Franklin County, in the western part of Massachussetts, along Rt 2 or The Mohawk Trail.
Major attractions are The Bridge of Flowers, an old trolly bridge transformed by the womens club of the town to it's present state. There is a Trolly Museum, where you can ride in the historic No. 10 Trolly! The Glacial Pot Holes, carved by nature during the last ice age.
Shelburne Falls is also the site of two recent movie productions: Labor Day and The Judge!
Bridge of Flowers & Glacial Potholes of Shelburne Falls
Bridge of Flowers & Glacial Potholes of Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. The Bridge of Flowers was once a trolley bridge built in 1908 by the Shelburne Falls & Colrain Street Railway. As the nearby Iron Bridge had only a 20-ton weight limit, the five-span, 400-foot concrete arched trolley bridge, connecting the towns of Shelburne and Buckland, was constructed to help deliver heavy freight from the Shelburne Falls railyard to the mills on the 7 1/2-mile line along Route 112 North to Colrain, as well as passengers and local goods, such as milk, apples and cotton.
The trolley was a social and commercial connection to area residents at that time. The railway company, however, was unable to keep up with progress, such as the invention of the automobile, as goods began to be hauled by truck and the company eventually went bankrupt in 1927. The railway's treasured history is maintained by the Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum.

Hi, CORVAIRWILD here. A little about me and what I do: First, I love my wife of many years, she is a wonderful lady. I call her Mrs CW. I can never go anywhere without her & my Dog Muggs! He's cool. You should have a dog like him too. Next, I am a landlord, NO, not a slumlord who does section 8 apartment rentals, but I keep my properties up like they were my own...they are my own! Like I live there. I have lots of apartment buildings, a farm out in the country and a house here and there. I am always doing something, driving rehabbing, you name it! I want to include you, so I bring my camera! EVERYWHERE! Haha.
ENJOY.
Did I mention I am a car enthusiast! I can't get enough Covairs and Vintage Chevy and GMC trucks. They have great reliability...all of em' the best vehicle on the road ever is a Corvair Spider Turbo. Back to the trucks, I love the diesel trucks and suburbans, Blazers too. That's what I plow snow with. A fisher snow plow. I'm a busy guy, but I make time for you. Thanks! CW
