The Exotic Zoo Run by Prisoners | Freethink

This is not a normal zoo. Staffed entirely by prisoners, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm offers a place of sanctuary to the animals and inmates. Jean Selander, who helps run the zoo, has seen the experience transform the inmates. The work gives them purpose and being around animals seems to have a calming effect. Since she began working at the jail zoo, over 100 exotic animals have been rescued and the lives of dozens of inmates have been changed for the better. Jeanne thinks the zoo can change people’s perception about inmates and help them rediscover their humanity.

The Arrest of Chris Lagergren - Monroe County Sheriffs Dashcam Video 9/10/2011

Chris Lagergren was arrested in Key Largo, FL on 09/11/11, by off-duty Miami Police Sergeant Javier Ortiz, for alleged trespassing and criminal mischief at the Marine Mammal Conservancy. Chris had been a volunteer at the MMC, and was providing the FL State authorities with documented evidence of numerous County Code violations at the facility, just prior to his arrest. He was charged with 4 misdemeanor counts of trespass/criminal mischief/vandalism and an AETA-like Felony under the Florida Animal Enterprise Protection Act (AEPA) for allegedly attempting to free a pilot whale. Chris was released on a staggering $32,000 bond.

Two years later on September 16, 2013 Chris pleaded No Contest to one count of trespassing and one count of criminal mischief. Chris was ordered to pay a $500 fine to the State of Florida and probation for one year with the only term being stay away from the Marine Mammal Conservancy. The Marine Mammal Conservancy did not receive any restitution.

Thanks to everyone who has helped and supported Chris over the past 2+ years! The Marine Mammal Conservancy was shutdown in early 2014. In Solidarity!
