I just visited Shetland Islands, one of the hidden gems in Scotland. Shetland is group of islands located in Northern Isles of Scotland and can be visited by an overnight ferry from Aberdeen, Scotland.
North Link Ferry is the only company the operates ferry to Shetland Islands. You can book the ferry from Aberdeen to Lerwick, the capital of Shetland.

Shetland Islands have many beautiful, unexplored places and you can spends days visiting them. But, if like me, you only have a day in Shetland, then follow my itinerary.
Rent a car in Shetland -
One day in Shetland Itinerary
- Ferry from Aberdeen to Shetland arrives in Lerwick by 7.30 am.
- Have breakfast at the ferry and start by 8.30 am.
- Drive to Sumburgh Head, the southernmost part of Shetlands.
Visit the Sumburgh Head Lighthouse and enjoy the nature reserve. You can sight some puffins if you are visiting in summers.
- Moving north towards Sumburgh Airport, you will see Jarlshof Prehistoric Settlements. Explore the 4000 years old site and learn about Viking history.
- Head towards south-west coast to visit St.Ninian's Isle. It's a stunning island attached to the mainland by a strip of land. On a sunny day you can find some locals kite surfing here. It's a stunning island; enjoy some beach time.
- Move towards North Atlantic Coast to visit largest island in Shetland, Scalloway. See the Scalloway Castle and Scalloway Museum. Scalloway Castle has free entry. You can get the keys for the castle from the museum or nearby Scalloway Hotel.
- Enjoy lunch in Scalloway
- Return to Lerwick and visit Shetland Museum and Archives. Learn about fascinating history and culture of Shetland islands.
- End your day by exploring the Lerwick city.
- Board the ferry back to Aberdeen - 17.30 pm (for Kirkwall and Aberdeen) and 19.00 pm (for the direct ferry to Aberdeen).

Lerwick is the main port of the Shetland Islands, Scotland, located more than 100 miles off the north coast of mainland Scotland on the east coast of the Shetland Mainland. Lerwick is about 210 miles (340 km) north-northeast of Aberdeen, 230 miles (370 km) west of Bergen in Norway and 230 miles (370 km) south east of Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands.
Lerwick is a busy fishing and ferry port. The harbour also services vessels supporting the offshore oil industry. Significant buildings in Lerwick include Fort Charlotte, Lerwick Town Hall, the Böd of Gremista, Shetland Museum and Archives and Clickimin Broch.
Because of the historic nature of the area, some scenes from BBC's Shetland (TV series) were filmed in Lerwick. Lerwick is served by the Tingwall Airport located a few miles away and Sumburgh Airport that is further south and flies all year to some Scotland destinations.
Northlink Ferries operate a daily overnight ferry service between Lerwick and Aberdeen, regularly calling in to Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands. The Shetland Islands Council operate a ro-ro ferry service to Out Skerries and Bressay from a terminal in the centre of the town. Lerwick has three schools; Bell's Brae Primary School, Sound Primary School and Anderson High School.
Lerwick has strong ties with Scandinavian countries, particularly Norway (Lerwick has a friendship agreement with Måløy in Norway), and this is reflected in the street names of Lerwick (e.g. King Harald Street, King Haakon Street). Lerwick is the focus of most events in Shetland, including the largest of the annual Up Helly-Aa fire festivals which takes place on the last Tuesday of January every year.

Old Photographs Of Unst Shetland Islands Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Unst, one of the North Isles of the Shetland Islands, Scotland. It is the northernmost of the inhabited British Isles and is the third largest island in Shetland after the Mainland and Yell. Its main village is Baltasound, formerly the second largest herring fishing port . Uyeasound village takes its name from the neighbouring strait of the same name, which looks over to the Isle of Uyea. Uyeasound is home to Greenwell's Booth, a Hanseatic warehouse and Muness Castle which was built in 1598 for Laurence Bruce of Cultmalindie, half brother to Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Orkney. Earl Robert was succeeded by his son Patrick in 1593. The building may have been constructed under the direction of Andrew Crawford, Earl Patrick's master of works, who also oversaw construction of Scalloway Castle and the Earl's Palace at Kirkwall, Orkney. In 1627 the castle was burnt down, and may never have been fully repaired. St John's Church in Baltasound, the largest settlement on the island of Unst was built between 1825 and 1827 with local labour. The Springfield Hotel, later to become the Baltasound Hotel, was well known to many servicemen from RAF Saxa Vord a radar station operated by the Royal Air Force. RAF Saxa Vord was further north than Leningrad, and on the same latitude as Anchorage, Alaska, America. The station was named after Saxa Vord, which is the highest hill on Unst at 935 feet. It holds the unofficial British record for wind speed, which in 1992 was recorded at 197 mph, just before the measuring equipment blew away.Thomas Barclay, born June 1792, died 23 February 1873, was a minister in the Church of Scotland and Principal of the University of Glasgow. He was born in Unst, and studied at King's College, Aberdeen, the predecessor institution of the University of Aberdeen, graduating M.A., and relocated to London, England, to work as a journalist. He later returned to Scotland to become a minister in the Church of Scotland.Burrafirth is where the shore station for the Muckle Flugga Lighthouse was located. The name Haroldswick comes from the Viking King Harald, and is reputed to be the first landing point for the Vikings on the Shetland Islands. For many years, Haroldswick Post Office was the most northerly in the UK and visitors could get a special postmark. Since the office's closure in 1999, this record is now held by the post office in Baltasound

Single Shot Scotland - Sunrise at Lerwick Harbour
At the crossroads of the North Sea and North-east Atlantic, Lerwick’s modern harbour is Britain’s ‘top’ port and the most northerly working harbour in the country. The deep-water port sees over 5,000 vessels berth and depart from the harbour each year, bringing in essential supplies as well as delicious fresh seafood and produce that you can find in local restaurants and bars.

The Shetlanders - The Happy Nurse
Vicky Schofield moved to Shetland from Chester four years ago to pursue her “perfect job” as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner at the Lerwick Health Centre, in Shetland’s capital. But while the job offered clear benefits — more time with patients, the chance to study for her Master’s degree, a generous relocation package — she also had to think about her husband, Martin, and her children Charlotte and Reuben, now nine and six.
“Of course, there were a lot of questions,” she says. “Would we fit in? Would we like it? Was there a brass band? Charlotte was really worried that we wouldn’t have the same furniture, so we spent a lot of time reassuring her that the furniture would be coming with us.”
Four years later, Martin works as a Conservation Officer for RSPB Scotland, primarily monitoring bird populations across the islands. Both he and Vicky play in the Lerwick Brass Band and help with everything from swim classes to rugby training, which means they’re almost as busy as Charlotte and Reuben, who swim, play rugby, go to Beavers/Brownies and spend a lot of time racing along the street on bikes.
And the job that looked perfect to Vicky when she saw it on the NHS Scotland website, “is still perfect”, helped by having a ten-minute walk along the seafront to work, and lots of banter with colleagues. “We have been really really happy with how we’ve been welcomed into the community,” she says. “Everybody’s always been very happy to see us, and very happy that we’ve come as a family. This is our home now.”
