Skyscraper Video #291: Yantai Shimao No.1 The Harbour
Sorry! From now, I will post skyscraper videos that are located in China on every Saturday and Sunday. Just like the UK Season that I made a few months ago.
Yantai Shimao No.1 The Harbour is a residential, hotel and office building in Jiefang Road, Yantai, Shandong, China. It had the height of 323 metres | 1,060 ft and 59 floors. The building contained 100 units of apartment and 396 hotel rooms. The construction started in 2008 and completed in 2015. By then, it is the 84th tallest in the world, 48th tallest in Asia, 40th tallest in China and the tallest in Yantai. The building featuring a five star hotel, apartments and commercial office buildings with expansive sea views. The design of the complex reintegrates the local area with the waterfront while creating a skyline identity for the coastal city. The signature Number 1 building is linked to a shared retail podium with 3 other residential towers and rises to 59 stories. The uppermost floors are made up of a series of setbacks forming a crown which culminates into a single spire. The structure is a composite featuring a concrete core with perimeter columns and floorplates framed with steel. The tower is then clad in a sleek curtain wall of blue glass. The tower has a hexagonal form with a longer orientation facing towards a waterfront park, maximizing ocean views.

CE visits Shenzhen (20.7.2018)
Chief Executive Carrie Lam visited Shenzhen today to meet government officials and promote co-operation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
She met CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee Secretary Wang Weizhong and Shenzhen Mayor Chen Rugui.
Noting this year marks the 40th anniversary of the country's reform and opening up, Mrs Lam said she plans to lead a delegation to Shenzhen later this year.
She invited local officials to come to Hong Kong for the opening ceremony of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link, given Shenzhen authorities’ tremendous contributions to the project.
Mrs Lam also visited Ping An Technology and was briefed on the company's application of technology in its insurance, healthcare and city management businesses.
She later stopped by Longgang District to learn about the development plan of the Shimao Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Center project.
The project kicked off in March and is expected to be completed in five years.
It will include a Shenzhen-Hong Kong youth entrepreneurial and startup centre, an innovation and technology experience centre, and facilities for international conventions and performing arts.
Mrs Lam also toured the Software Town of Shenzhen Universiade, a science and technology innovation industrial park in the district.
A Shenzhen-Hong Kong youth innovation entrepreneurship base was set up there last June for budding entrepreneurs.
She wrapped up her visit at the Institute of Robotics & Intelligent Manufacturing of Chinese University’s Shenzhen campus.
The institute is dedicated to both scientific research and industrial services.
Secretary for Innovation & Technology Nicholas Yang, Secretary for Labour & Welfare Dr Law Chi-kwong, Secretary for Food & Health Prof Sophia Chan, Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Patrick Nip and the Director of the Chief Executive's Office Chan Kwok-ki also joined today’s visit. (
There's a new contender for world's second tallest skyscraper
Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Center is part of a wider development by AS+GG(Credit: Adrian Smith+Gordon Gill Architecture)
We've reported on a lot of Shenzhen skyscraper announcements lately, but this one may well prove to be the most important. Poised to become one of the world's tallest buildings, perhaps even the second-tallest, the Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Center, by Adrian Smith+Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG), will rise to an impressive height of around 700 m (roughly 2,300 ft).
As things currently stand, the Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Center's height will make it the world's second-tallest building, behind the 829.8 m (2,723 ft)-tall Burj Khalifa (which was also designed by Adrian Smith during his time at SOM). That said, it could well drop to third or even fourth place if AS+GG's Jeddah Tower and Santiago Calatrava's Dubai Creek Tower are finished first.
To put its size into perspective, the building will be over twice the height of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, and around the same height as nine Boeing 747-8 airliners, stacked nose to tail.
The Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Center is part of a larger development by AS+GG that will include office space, apartments and a hotel. The tower itself will boast one of the world's highest observation points, as well as a swimming pool, restaurant, and nightclub. Its design consists of a complex sculpted facade that is likely intended to help mitigate the brutal wind forces at such heights – the same reason that the current world's second-tallest tower, the Shanghai Tower, twists so dramatically.
The Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Center is anthropomorphic in its character, representing and honoring in an abstract way the athletes that train and struggle to have the opportunity to perform in the world-class stadiums, arenas, and natatorium directly adjacent to and integrated into the overall AS+GG master plan for this project, says Adrian Smith. In this way, it adds a subtle layer of contextualism to the activities that these performance spaces contain. The result is a muscular expression in high-performance glass with layers of texture that define the elements of its shaped form.
The Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Center is slated for LEED Platinum certification (a green building standard) and will include high-performance glass to reduce heat gain, natural ventilation, rainwater collection and a focus on natural lighting.
As of writing, we've not received confirmation that the project is definitely going ahead, however earlier this year reports circulated that the building – then without an official architect being named – had begun construction, with an expected completion date of 2024. It's being developed by Shimao Property Group.
