Shimokitazawa (下北沢 ) is a commercial and entertainment district in Setagaya, Tokyo. Also known as Shimokita, the neighborhood is well known for the density of small independent fashion retailers, cafes, theaters, bars and live music venues.
The neighborhood is often compared with the backstreets of Ura-Harajuku and Koenji; smaller shop units and restricted vehicular access has limited its appeal to larger domestic and international fashion merchandisers, enabling independent retailers to survive. The district consists of the streets immediately surrounding Shimo-Kitazawa Station, where the Odakyu Electric Railway and Keio Inokashira Lines intersect. The neighborhood has long been a center for stage theater and live music venues; serves as a home to the historic Honda Gekijō theater and holds theater festivals throughout the year. With numerous cafes, secondhand and vintage fashion and recorded music outlets, Shimokitazawa remains popular with students and followers of Japanese youth subcultures.

I tried walking through the shopping street starting from the south exit of Shimokitazawa in Tokyo.
Shimokitazawa is a town where access is easy because the Odakyu line and the Keio line are connected stations.
Shimokitazawa's shopping district has many restaurants and there are plenty of shops that enjoy drinking.
People were enjoying a lot of shopping because it was evening.

Evening walk in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo - 4K 60FPS
Shimokitazawa is often mentioned when tokyoites rank the best places to live in this sprawling megalopolis.
Despite being located just a few minutes away from both Shinjuku and Shibuya - two of the most important mass transit hubs in Tokyo, the vibe here is much more akin of a small town.
Local bars, cheap restaurants and a high density of vintage clothes shops, records shops and live venues, has helped to make this part of town particularly popular with the young and arty crowd.
In this video, I walk around Shimokitazawa for about half an hour, both at the north and the south side of the station.

Walking in a residential Japanese neighborhood in Tokyo - Setagaya - 4K 60FPS (No Sound)
In this video I will take you on a walk in a quiet and relaxed residential area somewhere in Setagaya-Ku (Tokyo) near the Tamagawa River. Unfortunately, I was using an external mic while recording this, but I didn't notice that the batteries had run out, so there's no sound in this video. I didn't think I would publish it at all at first, but then I thought that there might be some of you who will enjoy it anyway, so I decided to get it out there.
Tomorrows post will have sound, I promise!
This was filmed on a weekday in November 2018, with a Fujifilm X-T3 in 4K 60FPS. The lens used is a Laowa 9mm f2.8, and the camera was mounted on a Zhiyun Crane gimbal for stability.

Night Walking in Setagaya, Tokyo - Shimokitazawa to Sangenjaya - 4K 60FPS
The first few minutes of this video is slightly out of focus. Apologies for that!
Sangenjaya is a cosy neighbourhood located just five minutes from Shibuya on the Tokyu Den-En-Toshi Line.
This area has more bars and restaurant than one can count, and many of them are very popular among the locals. As you can see in this video, the nightlife establishments are centred in a few pockets of older buildings, surrounded by newer high-rise structures.
I highly recommend checking this area out at night, as it has tons of charm and personality, and the people tend to be very friendly and down to earth. Compared to busy Shibuya or other well-known entertainment districts in Tokyo, Sangenjaya still consists of a crowd of primarily local people.
The movie starts and ends at Sangenjaya Station, I pass most of the major nightlife areas while circling the entire area.

Shimokitazawa Walk, Tokyo, Japan - Virtual Trip
Shimokitazawa is located in the Setagaya district, west of Tokyo, Japan. We are here far from the skyscrapers of Shibuya or Shinjuku, yet only a few minutes away by train. Like many areas of the city, we stroll here in an interlacing of small shopping streets, with many shops with pretty storefronts. First appreciated by intellectuals and writers in the early twentieth century, the district has retained its charm over time and still attracts a youth who cultivates here a certain artistic spirit, offbeat, bobo and relaxed. We can read everywhere that the places are oriented fashion and thrift, but in reality no more than elsewhere. There are all kinds of shops, small supermarkets, cafes, restaurants and it's a great place to end your day in Tokyo. There are theaters like the Honda Theater next to the train station, the Tollywood, which is a small art and experimental theater a little further south, jazz or rock bars, a few rare department stores like the 3 or 4 storey building of Uniklo. Otherwise for the rest, they are only neighborhood shops and small low buildings.
