Shinjuku Historical Museum / 新宿区歴史博物館 [Shinjuku Tube]
#shinjukutube #shinjukuwalk #新宿チューブ
Shinjuku Historical Museum located in about 10 minutes walk from JR/Metro Yotsuya station.
It preserves and inherits the cultural relics and history of Shinjuku and has a popular permanent exhibits like the scale model of Naitou Shinjuku post town and the model of city tram.
This is a good place to learn about Shinjuku from ancient times up to now.

Samurai Museum in Shinjuku, Tokyo
A video and photo documentary of my visit to the Samurai Museum in Shinjuku, Tokyo. I was really pleased to see that most of the artifacts on display in this particular museum were authentic and very old. We were even allowed to touch, handle and wear some of these ancient artifacts! Our museum guide was thoroughly impressed with my knowledge of Japanese military history and told me that I should be working there at the museum as a guide, ha! Without a doubt, it is one of the best museums that I've ever visited.
Tokyo's Yakitori Alley: Shinjuku 360 ★ ONLY in JAPAN
One of Tokyo's most famous food alleys is at Shinjuku's West gate where loads of yakitori and motsunabe restaurants date back to the late 1940s. It's a street food paradise where you can see and smell the grilling and frying -- hungry, you will be!
In this episode, John and Shingo visit OMOIDE YOKOCHO (思い出横丁) or Memory Lane. Have a look around the alley and shops in 360 VR!
Food featured:
★ Yakitori / やきとり
★ Motsunabe / もつ鍋
★ Ramen / ラーメン
★ Yakisoba / 焼きそば (fried noodles in sauce)
★ Yukhoe (Korean based dish of seasoned raw beef with egg)
※ Best seen in 4K (2160p) / change the settings and watch with WIFI on for super clear views.
Omoide Yokocho is most famous for motsunabe (stewed giblets) and yakitori. Why?
THE HISTORY:
Following WWII, flour was a government regulated good and ramen / noodles weren't available to street stands. Instead, restaurant owners turned to non-regulated ingredients like pig and cow enthralls which were readily available and cheap from American servicemen occupying the city. From this, motsunabe (stewed giblets) and yakitori (from enthralls) were born.
It's much better tasting than it sounds! About 20 shops in Omoide Yokocho still serve motsunabe like they did back in the mid 1940s.
The alley retains its old Showa period charm despite all the modern new buildings surrounding it. It's like entering a world trapped in time and definitely worth a stop on anyone's trip to Tokyo.
This place used to be called Piss Alley but who'd want to eat at a place with piss in the name? It was changed to Memory Lane which is simply more appetizing although I do make a trip to the toilets to see if they are modern washlet style or totally Medieval holes int he ground.

Edo-Tokyo Museum in Japan (江戸~東京の歴)
Breathtaking museum of the history of Tokyo during the Edo period. It was established in 1993 and is a must-see during your trip through Japan. Complete guide with photos:
Wonderful place that showcases permanent exhibitions of Tokyo during the Edo period and has additional exhibitions of the World War II period.
What: Edo-Tokyo Museum
Where: 1-4-1 Yokoami, Sumida-ku, Tokyo 130-0015 [Map]
When: 9:30am until 5pm (Monday closed)
Price: ¥600 Yen ($5 USD)
Why: History of Tokyo in the Edo period (1603-1868)
Tickets: Available at door
Notes: Located next to the Tokyo Skytree & Ryogoku Kokugikan (Sumo Wrestling stadium) in case you want to visit another attraction closeby.
Similar: Edo Wonderland
The main features of the permanent exhibitions are the life-size replica of the Nihonbashi, which was the bridge leading into Edo; the Nakamuraza theatre; and scale models of towns and buildings from the Edo, Meiji and Shōwa periods.
The museum is located in Ryōgoku adjacent to the Ryōgoku Kokugikan. It was designed by Kiyonori Kikutake.
The distinctive elevated shape of the museum building is modelled after an old storehouse in the kurazukuri style. One of the center pieces was a drawing of a Dutch vessel in the harbor of Nagasaki which intrigued me.
It also had a copy on display with the official seclution theory which was put into place by the Shogun, isolating Japan from the rest of the world, except for Holland (the Netherlands).
During the French Revolution and the take over of the Netherlands by Napoleon, the little Dutch island Deijima off the coast of Nagasaki, Japan was the last piece of Dutch territory left not under French rule. I found this fact to be quite surprising, to think that Holland was only officially in Japan.
There is a lot to see, so take an entire morning + afternoon to browse through all the items on display. Please keep in mind that the museum closes at 5:00pm.

Exploring Edo-Tokyo Museum | Japan 2016 | Episode 26
Our trip was quickly starting to wind down, only 3 days left. And of those days we’d only have a bit more time to sightsee as we had a bunch of shopping to get through before heading home.
Our main sight for the day was one which we had visited in the past, but I missed out on because I became very ill while there. I was able to rest on a bench giving Nicole some time to explore, so we knew enough that it was worth a proper visit.
This was the Edo-Tokyo Museum, which is an amazing museum detailing the history of Tokyo from the 1600s to the present. This is primarily during the Edo period when Tokyo was called Edo and Japan was ruled by the Tokugawa shogunate. The museum exhibit is outstanding and this is one of my favourite places to visit in the Tokyo. Even the building itself is very cool, a huge slab of a building high up on huge concrete pillars, a very long escalator taking you up into the belly of the building.
After our museum visit we decided to get our Karaoke fix in. We headed to Shibuya for a lunch of curry rice at CoCo and then an afternoon of poorly reproduced songs at Echo Entertainment, a Karaoke chain.
The day wound down in the Omotesandō area with a little shopping and a great dinner at an interesting posh food court we discovered in a subway station.
