Japan Trip 2019: Nikko (4K 60FPS)
After a few days in the big city, it's now time to go back to the countryside. My favorite! On the way to the north, Nikko is a small city known for its shrines, temples and mountainous landscapes. It is also part of the Japan Romantic Road. Let's take a good visit!
First thing we did early in the morning was go cross the sacred Shinko bridge. Crossing it gives good luck to couples, love and marriage. The sight was amazing with a view of the river and the mountain in background. At the end of the bridge there is a little box where you can pray and give a bit of money and wish for good luck!
The next thing we did was go walk on to the world heritage road which will lead us to thr many shrines and temples. Rinnoji temple is one of many on the road and one of the most important ones. It was in reconstruction at the time of my visit, but the bright red colors of the temple were beautiful. From there, we go to our main destination: Toshogu shrine.
If you've followed me on my previous trips, I love visiting shrines. They're all different, and this one was probably the most beautiful I saw yet. At the left of the entrance, there is a five story pagoda. The decorations on it were beautiful, decorated with representations of swans and dragons and more. To actually visit inside the shrine, you need to buy a ticket. With it, you gain access to all the temples inside it as well as great sightseeing spots. The memorable ones are the three monkeys carvings, Yomeimon gate, the Crying Dragon float, the Nemurineko sleeping cat carving and finally the inner sanctum. The monkeys are a carving representing see no evil, speak no evil and hear no evil. The Yomeimon gate, in particular, was really beautiful with its gold ornaments and decorations. Definitely one of the best looking ones I've seen yet.
After going through the gate, we saw the main shrine building and visited the insides of it. A small praying ceremony occured. Then, we went to sleeping cat carving, which is looking over everyone to protect them. After crossing the sleeping cat gate, we go up about 305 rock stairs, and get into the inner sanctum mausoleum which is the resting place of the late lord Tokugawa Ieyasu.
To end the day, we went a bit further down the Shinko bridge road to visit the Kanmangafuchi abyss. It is along a calm and soothing rivertrail. Near the end of it, you can see about 70 stones statues of Jizo split in three different group. Jizo was Bodhisattva who cared for the deceased.
This ends the visit to beautiful Nikko. I've learned a lot from my visit. Next stop is the Samurai city of Aizu!

The Japanese Overseas Migration Museum in Minato Mirai is an institution dedicated to collecting records on Japanese migrations overseas and showing the history of those emigrants; about how they set up roots and became important members of those countries (their new homes) yet keeping their identity as Japanese.
The history of Japanese migrations in the modern age started in 1885, when 945 Japanese left Yokohama for Hawaii islands for three years of labor in January 28, 1895. After that, many headed to the Hawaii islands as important hands in growing sugar cane and then to North America looking for highly paid jobs. Emigrants migrated to South America after the United States closed its door in 1924. Over the last 100 years, some 760,000 went overseas and now some 2.5 million nikkei, or persons of Japanese ancestry are living all over the world. They are living in North and South America countries such as the United States, Canada, Columbia, Paraguay, Peru, Brazil, Bolivia and Argentina. This museum shows the history of those emigrants and the hardship they faced and how they set up roots in these new worlds through its exhibits.
A real size model of a float crafted by Japanese migrant farmers for a Festival in Oregon welcomes you at the entrance. A lot of pictures, models, and items actually used by migrants are displayed all over the floor. Through them you can imagine how they lived in these new places and created their communites. A heap of luggage in the center of the floor reminds me of a display of luggage at Elis Island Museum in New York. I heard from a museum guide that some brought a picture of the emperor and empress with them in their luggage. We can learn the culture of those days through them.
Those who migrated boarded a ship from Yokohama or Kobe. There were government migration training centers in both cities, where migrants learned languages and get necessary information for a few months before setting sail. Yokohama functioned as a gateway for their destinations until the last group of emigrants left Yokohama in February 14, 1973.
I also learned from the guide that many Japanese descendants of those who left from Yokohama have come to this museum as a part of their journey of roots searching. Exhibit materials are written both in Japanese and English.
Three to four times a year, special exhibitions are held at the exhibition hall to focus on particular topics. When I visited the museum this August, it featured Japanese towns in the Americas, where they continue to be the center of their communities.
The museum is located in the JICA building across the street from World Porters, a large shopping mall, in the Shinko area. JICA is the Japanese version of the U.S. Peace Corps. It is on the same street as the Nissin Cup Noodle Museum, which is just a few minutes away on foot. At a restaurant on the third floor of the building, they serve meals at a reasonable price.
JICA's trainees from Africa, Asia and the Middle East use the restaurant and give it an international atmosphere. Views of the Redbrick warehouses and harbor beyond are nice.

Video and images of Japanese ports. Sefco Japan maritime series 3s (2010)
Video on Japanese Ports This series of short videos by SEFCO EXPORT includes images taken in and around both Yokohama Bay and Tokyo Harbor.
As an island nation, Japan has along history as well as current focus on maritime activities.
Its port museums reflect this history and interest; thousands of students go on tours of the museums which help stoke interest in and appreciation for maritime science ad commerce.
Included in this series, one can see: Lift-van crates stored in transit while on the docks at Yokohama Bay, covered by a large canopy, on the dock and out of doors. (Which leads us to the question: would your LCL cargo be well enough protected, to withstand the elements which dockside or in transit? Export packaging is crucial element to safe transport of sea-going cargo.)
Container ships staged at the docks andd working their cargo (loading/unloading) while on Yokohama port and Odaiba port in Tokyo Harbor.
Japanese customs house facilities, current location and past history of their operations; port control facilities run by the Japanese Coast Guard. Japanese SDF self defense force videos. Port wind & water turbines.
Historical perspectives: on and off board the Nippon Maru sailing training vessel; Yokohama Port museum, symbolic statuary for the sister port relationship between Yokohama and Vancouver ports,
dockyard photos - past and present, the Minato No. 1 Bridge - built 1906 by the American Bridge Company of New York.
Be sure to return to our web site to see additional videos and presentations, on the subjects: international trade and commerce, export and import operations, overseas moving and shipping of both personal and commercial cargo, roll on - roll off ships, container ships, LCL lift-van cargo, export packaging, international freight forwarding agent facilities,

Japanese Urban Gardens
If you live in a Japanese city, space is a rather limited commodity. That in no way stops people from having really cool little gardens in front of their houses or apartments. I've seen far more elaborate than this, but thought you might like a peek!

Repair of old AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) PCB.
A look at an old AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) PCB that I was asked if I could fix. these devices are used in generators to regulate the output voltage, which they do by varying the DC excitation of the rotating (rotor) central core of a generator. A generator works by spinning a polarised magnetic field inside an external (stator) group of coils to induce current in them as an alternating AC waveform. By varying the magnetic field of the internal rotor by applying DC current via slip rings, you can adjust the voltage generated.
In this case the AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) is powered by the output voltage and also uses it to monitor voltage and frequency. It doesn't regulate the frequency, since that is done by the device rotating the generator, but it can detect if it's dropping too low and stop applying excitation for protection against high current flow. It monitors the voltage and compares it to a set value to determine if DC excitation of the rotor is required, and if it is then this unit uses a thyristor to switch the power to the rotors excitation coil on one half of the output waveform.
The operation of these generators generally requires a residual magnetic field in the rotor to even start producing electricity, so if a generator has not been used in a long time and that field has diminished too low to induce enough current in the output (stator) windings to provide its own excitation current, then it is sometimes necessary to disconnect the excitation windings and apply a DC current briefly (often from a starter battery) with the correct polarity to put in a base magnetic field to get the system running again. This is called flashing.
This video also shows how some fairly innocent passive components can fail as opposed to the more common active components. In this case it was a resistor that was being used well within its rating, but failed in a manner that left no obvious sign of the damage you normally see with less passive resistor failure.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
