My day 3 in #Georgia country: visited from #Jvari #monastery; #Shio monastery; #Samtavro monastery; #Mtskheta city; #Svetitskhoveli #cathedral; #freedomesquare; #clockleaningtower; #puppet #theatre
At 10:00 in the morning rode to Jvari (means #Cross) monastery. It is located at the rocky mountaintop that confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers. There you can see the Mtskheta town (overlooking). It is listed as UNESCO World Heritage site.
About 32 minutes of approx 23.8km from Jvari, we rode to #ShioMgvime monastery but it was closed that time due to lenten season. Shiomghvime means 'the cave of Shio'; Shio means priest.
So instead there, we went to Samtavro a 4th-century built monastery and there is a cemetery as well. There you can see the burials of King Mirian and Queen Nana at the entrance of the monastery.
Next we went to Mtskheta city and roamed the souvenirs market. Then we proceed to Svetitskhoveli Cathedral - just a walking distance from the market. Svetitskhoveli cathedral is the 2nd largest church in Georgia in terms of building next to the Holy Trinity cathedral (Sameba). There you can find many tombs of kings and leaders buried inside the cathedral. Svetitskhoveli means the 'Cathedral of the Living Pillar'. Also known as the burial site of Christ's mantle and listed as #UNESCO #World #Heritage #site.
For lunch, went to #Salobio #restaurant and ate #lobio with Georgian #cornbread. It was nice one of Georgia's traditional #foods. There I met a Filipino who at first I thought the guy is a Japanese. hehe, they were great - thank you both of you. Thank you too to Miro for introducing this food to me. In the afternoon, back to hostel then I roamed the old Tbilisi by myself. I was looking for the leaning clock tower or the Rezo Gabriadze Theatre. But this time I didn't made it to witnessed the puppet show it's daily schedule is only twice a day by 12nn & 7pm. Been to freedom square and found a catholic church just few minutes walk from the hostel.

The Shio-Mgvime monastery (Georgian: შიომღვიმე, Shiomghvime, literally meaning the cave of Shio) is a medieval monastic complex in Georgia, near the town of Mtskheta. It is located in a narrow limestone canyon on the northern bank of the river Mtkvari (Kura), some 30 km from Tbilisi, Georgia's capital.

Согласно исторической традиции, первая монашеская община на этом месте была основана в VI веке монахом Шио, одним из тринадцати ассирийских отцов, которые прибыли в Грузию в качестве христианских миссионеров. Святой Шио провел свои последние годы, отшельником в глубокой пещере возле Мцхеты, впоследствии названной Шиомгвиме (Пещера Шио).
Самая первая постройка - храм Святого Иоанна Крестителя (построен в 560-580 годах). Это крестообразная в плане церковь , очень проста и строга по своей конструкции. К тому же времени относятся и вырытые монахами пещеры и сейчас видимые вокруг монастыря и вдоль дороги ведущей к монастырскому комплексу. Церковный купол опирается на восьмиугольный барабан и покрыт конической крышей. Внутри храма был размещён богато украшенный каменный иконостас со сценами жития преподобного Шио, находящийся сейчас в тбилисском Государственном Музее искусств Грузии. Колокольня храма возведена в 1733 году.

Верхняя церковь (Земо Эклесия) названная в честь Божией Матери является центральной частью Шио-Мгвимский монастыря и построена на рубеже XII века по приказу царя Давида IV. Первоначально купольная церковь, она была впоследствии уничтожена иностранным вторжением и восстановлена в 1678 году, как базилика.
Трапезная построена между XII и XVII веками и соединена переходом с пещерой святого Шио. Небольшая часовня XII века, украшенная средневековыми фресками стоит отдельно на близлежащем холме.
Монастырь был несколько изменен в XI и XVIII веках, но во многом сохранил свою первоначальную архитектуру.
Археологическая экспедиция 1937 года показала, что воду монашеской общине поставлял 2 километровый водопровод протянутый из соседней деревни Схалтба и упомянутый в летописи 1202 года, как построенный епископом Антоном из Чкондиди, министром царицы Тамары.

In this Episode we hitchhike from Georgia's capital Tbilisi to Georgia's old capital Mskheta. On the way we visit Jvari Monastery where we get some amazing views of Mtskheta. We struggle to get a ride into town, but finally make it and we have our first Georgian lunch this journey. We decide to try our luck hitchhiking up to Shio-Mgvime Monastery to check out the caves and find a secluded camping spot, and so we do, next to a small little church from the 12th century. And, check out that view!!!
