Wild SHANGHAI STREET FOOD in City God Temple + Yu Gardens Tour | Shanghai, China
In April of 2019, I had the pleasure of visiting China for the second time in my life. I spent 12 days exploring and eating my way through the cities of Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou. I had the time of my life and I can’t wait to share my adventures with you!
Newman Tours:
My second full day in China continued in Shanghai when I met up with my friend Daniel from Newman Tours. They offer incredible tours in cities all over China. We started our adventure in the Old Town of Shanghai at the beautiful Yu Gardens.
Our journey began at a replica of one of the four original entrances of the old town. We saw a statue of a mythological creature with a very interesting backstory outside of a jewelry store.
Our first stop was a place selling deep-fried local crabs. There are salty and spicy varieties. I went with the spicy one and dug into the meat in the middle. It was really nice and crispy. They were so meaty and delicious. I could eat everything on it, but the middle had so much meat in it!
Then we headed off to try the original xiaolongbao from 1900. To get there, we had to pass through a temple and marketplace area. We passed lots of street food vendors along the way. These xiaolongbao contain crab and pork. They’re much bigger than the regular xiaolongbao. You have to pop them with a straw to drink the soup before you eat them!
The soup inside was so hot. There was a lot of it inside! Then I grabbed my chopsticks and dove in. They’re huge and much thicker than the other xiaolongbaos I’d had, but it was so delicious!
We continued on to Yu Market, which has been around since the 16th century, and Yu Garden. It’s very clean and feels like an open-air mall. The temple architecture is stunning and there are so many things to see!
We headed on to a restaurant that sells over 100 dishes, including sweet and sour soups, dumplings, sticky rice, snails, pot stickers, eel, squid, and much more!
I went with some glutinous sticky rice balls with red bean paste inside. It was too hot and was super sticky and kind of slimy on the outside. I loved the red bean paste inside. Daniel brought me some coconut juice from Hainan Island near Vietnam. The juice was delicious and refreshing. It was straight coconut juice!
Then we crossed the zigzag bridge, which zigs and zags to lost ghosts, which were traditionally thought to only be able to travel in a straight line. I love learning about history. Ahead of us was a tea house.
There was a statue of the goddess of the lotuses. You make a wish and try to toss your coin onto the lotus pad she stands on. If I get it, I get two wishes. I got one inside and wished for a million subscribers!
Next, we went into Yu Garden, which was beautiful and dates back to the Ming Dynasty. It’s thought this temple was built using stolen money from taxpayers! There’s also an ancient rockery or rock garden, which is quite beautiful! I learned so much from Daniel!
There are lots of doorways in the garden. We reached an area where the path forked; long ago, one path was taken by the men and the other by the concubines! Newman Tours provides an audio guide for Yu Gardens that really helps you out!
Coming here is like taking a trip back in time. It’s one of the few areas where you can see things that were built in the 16th century. There was a gorgeous gate with two huge dragons with three fingers. From there, we fed the fish. There are lots of carp there and they’re really big!
We also saw a large rock that was meant to be a gift to for the emperor, but it fell into the river after it was placed on a boat to be transported to the capital. It was fished out hundreds of years later and moved to the garden.
To wrap up, Daniel gave me the opportunity to see my future by using some ancient Chinese fortune sticks. You shake the container containing the sticks until one comes out. On the stick is a fortune that corresponds with one in a booklet. You only want one; if two come out, it means the gods are laughing at you!
I made a different wish and shook out the number 9. It told me to be honest, straight, and true if I win success in life, otherwise I would fail!
I hope you enjoyed my wild Shanghai food tour and Yu Gardens visit! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel!

China has a free 72 hour transit visa for flight layovers in major Chinese cities. I had a 22 hour layover in Shanghai (Pudong Airport). Here’s how I made the best use of my time exploring some of Shanghai's top attractions.
Note: As some recall , I lost a lot of China footage early this year. While I was unable to salvage my Beijing layover challenge, I’m glad I got to share Shanghai.

ULTIMATE Shanghai STREET FOOD Breakfast Tour in French Concession | Shanghai, China
I love China. I first visited Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai back in 2015 with my father. I fell in love with the food, culture, and history then, so I jumped at the chance to go back in April of 2019. This time, I visited Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou for a deeper dive into this unique place. I can’t wait to share it all with you!
Follow UnTour Food Tours on Instagram:
On the morning of my second full day in Shanghai, I met back up with my boy Li from UnTour Food Tours. He took me on a mouthwatering street food breakfast tour! Come along with us as we explore more of Shanghai!
We started by watching people do tai chi in a park in the center of the former French Concession.
From there, we stopped at an old-school diner-like eatery with communal seating. We got 4 dishes, including soymilk; a sticky rice ball with shredded pork, duck egg, and vegetables; an oily Chinese churro; and a sweet Chinese flatbread.
I dipped my churro into the soymilk at first. It tasted like the churros in Spain, except without sugar. Then I tore up the rest and let it soak up the milk. It was fantastic!
Next was the dense sticky rice ball, which contained lots of spice, egg, and pickled vegetables. It was really filling!
I finished up with a bite of the crispy, biscuit-like flatbread. It was delicious, but I held off on the rest.
I watched them prepare and fry the churros outside. There were also fried empanada-like dumplings!
Next, we visited a hole-in-the-wall restaurant for a thick, savory, seven-layered pancake with a sweet, red chili sauce. It looked like a dish I’d had in Greece. I loved the crispiness on the outside and softness on the inside. The sauce was really rich and had some spice that snuck up on me!
Our next spot at least 20 varieties of sweet and savory buns for 2 Yuan/roughly $0.30 each. There was a long line, so we’d come back later.
Then, we grabbed my favorite Chinese breakfast food, jianbing. It’s a type of crepe that contains egg, vegetables, a cracker, and sweet and spicy sauces. It was packed with flavor and had a great balance between sweet and spicy! I loved the cilantro!
Next was shepherd’s purse and pork wontons. It contained a delicious soup and was topped with spring onions. It was so juicy and delicious!
Then I had a pot sticker containing soup and sesame oil. You take a nibble and suck the soup out because it’s so hot. The soup inside was so good! I added some chilies and waited for it to cool off. I loved it, especially the crispy bottom!
We also had two steamed buns: one with black sesame and one with egg custard. The black sesame almost tasted like chocolate while the egg custard was super sweet. I liked the egg custard more.
We were getting full, so we took a break from eating. Outside, I watched them prepare the pot stickers and grabbed some coffee. I got a cold brew with coconut water, which was so different and tropical. I loved the natural sweetness!
Then, we saw some lane houses, which are have black gates, huge frames, and courtyards. There were lots of different architectural styles in the area. They were beautiful!
Next, we passed through a popular wet market, an open supermarket where they sell lots of veggies, meat, poultry, and seafood. Then it was time for some hand-pulled noodles, which are always a spectacle!
Our next spot was a 24/7, family-run restaurant. The noodles were covered in a sticky sauce. I added some chili sauce, which was pungent but not too spicy. So good! They were some of the best noodles I’ve ever had!
Next was a tofu bamboo stir-fry with green pepper red onions. It consists of soymilk skin, which has a texture similar to bamboo. I loved the peppers!
Our final dish was xiaolongbao, or soup dumplings, at Loushi Dumpling Shop. They contain ginger. You dip them into black rice vinegar, nibble a corner, and suck out the soup so it doesn’t burn your tongue. They were amazing, but I was so full!
I hope you enjoyed this epic Shanghai street food tour of the French Concession! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel!

Shanghai Yu Garden Info:
Yu Garden or Yuyuan Garden (simplified Chinese: 豫园; traditional Chinese: 豫園) is an extensive Chinese garden located beside the City God Temple in the northeast of the Old City of Shanghai at Huangpu Qu, Shanghai.
This garden is accessible from the Shanghai Metro's Line 10 Yuyuan Garden Station.
A centrepiece is the Exquisite Jade Rock (玉玲珑) a porous 3.3-m, 5-ton boulder. Rumours about its origin include the story that it was meant for the Huizong Emperor (Northern Song Dynasty from 1100-1126 AD) at the imperial palace in Beijing, but was salvaged from the Huangpu River after the boat carrying it had sunk.
Yu Garden was first built in 1559 during the Ming Dynasty by Pan Yunduan as a comfort for his father, the minister Pan En, in his old age. Pan Yunduan began the project after failing one of the imperial exams, but his appointment as governor of Sichuan postponed construction for nearly twenty years until 1577. The garden was the largest and most prestigious of its era in Shanghai, but eventually its expense helped ruin the Pans.
The garden was inherited by Zhang Zhaolin, Pan Yunduan's granddaughter's husband, and then passed to different owners. A section was briefly organised by Zhang Shengqu as the Academy of Purity and Harmony (清和书院, Qīng-Hé Shūyuàn) and the Ling Yuan (灵苑, Líng Yuàn, lit. Spirit Park), today's East Garden, was purchased by a group of local leaders in 1709. A group of merchants renovated the increasingly decrepit grounds in 1760 and in 1780 the West Garden was opened to the general public.
The gardens suffered damage numerous times during the 19th century. During the First Opium War, the British army used the Huxinting Teahouse as a base of operations for several days in 1842. During the Taiping Rebellion, the Small Swords Society ran its headquarters in the Dianchun Hall; by the time Qing troops recovered the garden, the original structures had nearly all been destroyed. They were damaged again by the Japanese in 1942 before being repaired by Liangshun Han appointed by the Shanghai government from 1956 to 1961. They were opened to the public in 1961 and declared a national monument in 1982.

Shanghai City Tour With Jennys Tours
This was my first trip to China, and with help from Jennysshanghaitours.com I had a couple of eventful days - and nights in Shanghai.
Peggy was my first city guide in Shanghai.
On my first day, The first stop with Peggy was the Yuyuan Garden Bazar….. Hundreds of years old…. and yes…. VERY touristy, but that’s apparently no recent thing - you see, the gardens here have attracted visitors for many years, and where there’s visitors, there’s always an entrepreneur ready to make a quick sale!
After the bazar, it was into the gardens themselves…. set up by a rich and powerful family of Shanghai hundreds of years ago…. they remain one of the oldest and most beautiful parts of the city, and a great area to get some peace away from the hustle and bustle of high-rise shanghai.
After our morning at Yuyuan garden, it was onto the Shanghai metro to our next stop - I have to say I was really grateful to Peggy and Jenny’s tours at this point as without them, navigating this vast network would have been rather tricky for a first timer!
We soon arrive at Xintiandi - part of the city’s french concession which was lovely. Another older part of the city with narrow alley, low european style houses and plenty of shops…. plus some great restaurants and cafes, perfect for our lunch stop. Naturally - the menu was all in chinese so I was glad of Peggy’s help when it came to ordering! Dumplings is a local dish, which I had to try - and I loved!
The next stop on our tour was only a short walk away and one of my most favourite stops on the tour. Mainly because it was so personal to Peggy and somewhere no guide-book would ever have told me about. A pet market. more specifically a cricket-market! Crickets in shanghai are kept as pets - Peggy had one as a child… to remind the residents of the countryside. They’re also bought by adults for sport - and maybe gambling although no one wanted to admit to that - and bought as fighting crickets to be pitched against other fighters in cricket fighting tournaments. If crickets aren’t your thing - there’s plenty of other animals looking for a home too!
Before long if was onto the metro and onto our last stop for the day…. and this one was another fantastic place that only someone with local knowledge would really know about! Underneath an apartment block in the centre of the city is a a small museum set-up in someone’s garage called the Chinese Propaganda Art Museum….. which paints a fascinating picture of Chinese history as the government wanted it to be seen - obviously though, you can read between the lines and take away from this your own interpretations.
Day 2 in Shanghai, and today, I was exploring alone…. but armed with plenty of tips from Peggy, I made my own way to Fuxing Gardens….. I was told that retirees of shanghai sometimes visit here to take part in local exercise classes, dance meetings and other hobby groups…. I however, didn’t expect it to be such a popular place among the local OAP’s and I was genuinely moved at how much enjoyment was being had by the visitors to the park, and at how welcoming everyone was to a lone tourist turning up with his camera. This was a lovely place to spend a morning and I felt very honoured to be allowed to spectate from the sidelines.
Later in the day, It was time to ride the world’s fastest elevator….. I wanted to visit the world’s second tallest building - The Shanghai Tower. This was something else I did alone as it was easy enough to find and navigate my way to the top - and the reward…. stunning views of the entire city, 126 floors up!
In the evening, I was met at my hotel by Celine, my next guide from jennysshanghaitours.com who had an amazing night planned…. a trip on a boat along the bund to see Shanghai light up at night.
The boat trip was stunning… but certainly helped build up an appetite, so with Celine's local knowledge we headed to local food streets near by and spent the rest of the evening tasting some brilliant local dishes. The perfect way to end my short trip to this fascinating city.
With thanks to Jenny's Tours
