Japan Travel: Shorenin temple beautiful garden with giant camphor tree, Kyoto
Shorenin is a temple of the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism standing at the base of Kyoto's Higashiyama mountains. It is one of the city's monzeki temples, which are the temples whose head priests originally belonged to the imperial family. Taking a winding route, visitors find themselves in Shorenin's various temple buildings and gardens.
Shorenin's close relationship with the Japanese imperial family started with the temple's founding in the 12th century. The Emperor Toba was a follower of the Tendai sect, whose head temple is Enryakuji Temple in the mountains of northeastern Kyoto. The emperor's son studied under Enryakuji's head priest, and built Shorenin as a residence for the two of them in the city. In the course of time, the residence was converted into a genuine temple. An interesting turn of fate made Shorenin once again serve as a residence during the 18th century when a fire forced an empress to use the temple as her temporary home.

“Shorenin Monzeki” (head priest of Shorenin temple), one of Tendai sect’s three Monzeki Temples (a temple in which the head priest was traditionally a member of the Imperial Family or Regent Family). In addition to the light-up that takes place in the spring and autumn, the stunning gardens of the landscape gardener in the Muromachi era and the spectacular view from the grand stage on the precincts make you want to take photos unintentionally.
At “Shorenin Monzeki Temple”, the garden is lit up every spring and autumn. 1,000 large and small lighting fixtures illuminate the precincts of trees, bamboo forests, moss gardens, and so on.

Shoren-in Temple [4K] The Garden of Kyoto Japan
The garden of Shoren-in temple was created at the base of Mt. Awata. It is believed that this tranquil and overwhelming garden was designed by Soami during the Muromachi era. The garden on the east side of Sokaden, known as the Garden of Kirishima, was designed by Enshu Kobori and has beautiful flowers in varying colors, including azaleas that cover the entire slope alongside the Kobuntei, interspersed with flowers such as cape jasmine and the Japanese andromeda. One corner of the Kobuntei offers a completely different environment. Undoubtedly, this is one of the most beautiful Japanese gardens that effectively utilizes its surrounding natural beauty.
Since the Shorenin temple is a venerable temple closely associated with the imperial family, its entire structure is elegant due to its gracious appearance.
In the central part of the garden, there is a pond, Ryujin-no-ike, surrounded by the three buildings—Kogosho, Kachoden (guesthouse), and Kobuntei. To the south of the pond, there is a basin of a waterfall, Sensin-no-taki, which flows down from Mt. Awata. On the eastern side of the garden, there is a small, mildly curved hill. This hill is often found in the drawings of Sotatsu or in those of the Tosa school of painting. The Kobuntei is located on the northern side of the hill.
On its southern side, the rim of the pond stretches to the south, between the base of the mountain and the building, running under the roof edge of the Kogosho. Across the narrow part of the pond near the Kogosho, there is a semicircular stone bridge known as Koryu-no-hashi, which is built from two types of granites. The design of this stone bridge incorporates several innovative ideas.
Located at the centre of Ryujin-no-ike is a big stone; its shape gives the appearance of the back of a dragon bathing in the pond. On the western side, facing the waterfall and basin, there is a big blue stone used for worship.
In front of the connecting corridor near the Kogosho, there is a basin created by a straight line-shaped natural stone. This stone basin, symbolizes valiance and well known as Ichimonji-Chozubachi; it was donated by Hideyoshi Toyotomi.

Kyoto, Japan, Temple Gardens: Fushimi-Inari-Taisha, Tofuku-ji, Maruyama Park
Kyoto is Japan’s majestic city of ancient temples, serene gardens and superb cultural treasures. Your most enjoyable activity will probably be strolling through artistically designed garden landscapes with their winding paths, tranquil ponds, stately trees, lush vegetation and traditional wooden temples, including Fushimi-Inari-Taisha, Tofuku-ji and Maruyama Park.
The sublime gardens unfold as you walk along paths that lead through changing vistas around each bend, where you can stop frequently to absorb each new perspective looking left, right, up and down. The different views are enhanced by small statues, foot-bridges, bamboo railings, temple back-drops and glimpses of distant mountains, all exquisitely arranged to be appreciated in moments of reflection.
Kyoto was ranked as the number one visitor destination in the world by the readers of Travel and Leisure magazine for two years in a row in 2014 and 2015, quite an honor.
More than 50 million visitors come to Kyoto each year, most of them are just staying for the day then moving on, but about 1 million of them do spend the night in a local hotel -- there are lots of accommodations of all price ranges -- and most of the visitors are Asian. No doubt with the growth of Chinese travel these numbers are going to continue increasing.
These crowds of visitors could very much interfere with your appreciation of Kyoto’s heavenly gardens. So, try to visit during the less-busy late fall or early spring in order to properly experience the tranquil garden atmosphere.

The Garden of Emperor Goshirakawa: Jōnan-gū!
Jonangu Shrine is a beautiful shrine with an extensive history. It was originally established by Emperor Kammu when Kyoto became the nation's capital. At the end of the Heian period, it became home to retired emperor Goshirakawa. As a result, the beautiful Rakusui-en Garden was constructed. There are four different types of gardens representing the respective styles of the Heian, Muromachi, Momoyama and Heisei periods (from the 10th century to the present). It consists of the Spring Hill, the Garden of Heian, the Garden of Muromachi, the Garden of Momoyama and the Garden of Jonan Imperial Palace.
