Why Ocean Shores Beachcombing is a BLAST
Collectors at this year’s beachcombing fair in a Washington town had something surprising to put on display.
At 19, Alan Ramer was heading out to a Hawaiian beach one day in 1970 when the hotel concierge stopped him and asked where he was going. Ramer told her he was off to look for seashells. “Oh honey,” she said. “You don’t want to look for seashells, you want to look for glass bubbles.” The bubbles, she told him, were Japanese glass fishing floats. Handblown and tied into nets, some broke free of their rope cradles and rode the Pacific currents until they snagged on the Hawaiian Islands or North American coast.
Ramer went searching and never really stopped, becoming an avid glass ball collector. He eventually befriended a worldwide network of collectors. In 1983, he and some of his friends began the Beachcombers Fun Fair in Ocean Shores, Washington. In March 2019, he’s the emcee of the 32nd iteration.
Collectors of many coastal commodities are here from across the country admiring the displays of treasures spit up by the waves. There are “sea beans”—hardy coin-sized seeds from South America and Africa that litter the Atlantic coast—messages in bottles, and piles of 2011 Tōhoku earthquake debris.
This year, there’s a startling new addition to the fair. Chunks of unexploded anti-aircraft ordnance from the Second World War have been washing up along the broad white-sand beaches of Ocean Shores and the surrounding area with sudden and unexplained frequency. The area was an important navy base during the war, and unused munitions were likely disposed of in the area after peace was declared. Some mysterious oceanographic or geological quirk has uncovered them now. Residents are less riled by these new “sea shells” than by their disposal: they’re collected into piles on the beach and destroyed by the US Army in large—and loud—explosions.
Back in the hall, the county sheriff conducts a question-and-answer session about munitions safety, but most beachcombers seem unperturbed. Explosive potential aside, the strange chunks of ordnance are just another symbol of the ocean’s mysteries. Every piece here, no matter how small, ragged, and storm tossed, represents a connection to another person, another place. And that connection is what keeps pulling Ramer and others like him back to the beach.

HORSES, KITES AND FLAGS AT OCEAN SHORES, WASHINGTON
Ocean Shores, Washington is just off the coast from Highway 101 along the Pacific coast of the northwestern United States. A unique beach where bathing suits are not the norm but horses, cars, all terrain vehicles and kites can be seen on any given day (with a touch of unique patriotism added to the mix!).
Cascadia Subduction Zone - Ocean Shores Inundation
Credit: NOAA / PMEL / Center for Tsunami Research
The NOAA Center for Tsunami Research modeled tsunami inundation from a great Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake for the coastal communities of Long Beach and Ocean Shores, Washington. A high-resolution numerical model was used to estimate tsunami propagation and inundation along the outer coast of southwest Washington. The tsunami source is based on prior work by Walsh et al., (2000) that simulates a great Mw 9.1 earthquake with an asperity off the coast of northern Washington. Details of this scenario and the model results are provided in Venturato et al., 2007. These animations depict wave propagation and inundation at each location.

Review: Skatepark Rules in Ocean Shores, WA; Conclusion: They look fair.
Every Skatepark I see has this huge skatepark rules sign in it. it is quite fascinating. No where have I seen so many rules posted for such a unique setting.
All the skateparks may word their rules a little differetly depending on what they got. Like this skatepark for instance, doesn't have a bowl, so no rules apply for that particular activity. Lots of people have problems with bicycles in the bowl.
If you don't build a bowl, then you will prevent particular problems. I'm not sure if the design of the skatepark is up to the skaters who want it, or what feels convenient to build instead. Either way, the look and feel of it will influence how the skaters react to it.

Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park is a 4,027-acre camping park with 73,640 feet of freshwater shoreline at the foot of Dry Falls. Dry Falls is one of the great geological wonders of North America. Carved by Ice Age floods that long ago disappeared, the former waterfall is now a stark cliff, 400 feet high and 3.5 miles wide. In its heyday, the waterfall was four times the size of Niagara Falls. Today it overlooks a desert oasis filled with lakes and abundant wildlife.

10. The Lost Sea
Located deep inside a mountain near Sweetwater, Tennessee is the Lost Sea. The Guiness Book of World Records calls it America’s Largest Underground lake and it is the world’s 2nd largest non-subglacial underground lake. This enormous lake is part of a cave system known as Craighead Caverns.
The visible surface of the lake measures 800 feet (240 m) long and 220 feet (67 m) wide. That’s as far as we can see with the naked eye. The rest of this extraordinary natural landmark is below the surface and currently being explored by divers. The exploration has covered a further 13 acres and they have found a series of mysterious rooms. Artifacts show that the Cherokee used to use these spaces and the first white settlers also used the rooms to store food and gunpowder. The divers and researchers aren’t sure if these caves were carved out by an ancient group of people or if they were formed naturally.
The lake is filled with trout and the area is known for its cave flowers. Cave flowers, or anthodites, have a needle-like structure and the ones by the Lost Sea are very rare. There are daily tours where you can take a walk and boat ride around the cave. It is definitely on my bucket list!!
9. Sea Life Tsunami
A more recent strange discovery is the arrival of new organisms popping up on American shores. Animals native to Japan are showing up in America after the earthquake and subsequent 40 meter (131 ft) high Tsunami in 2011.
The earthquake created devastation on an epic scale, but no-one could have predicted the effect the tsunami had on Japanese sea life.
In locations such as Washington State and Oregon, all kinds of items washed up, from tiny pieces of plastic to an entire dock. These items have carried a reported 289 species across the water from one nation to another. Some of their journeys have taken as long as two years. The species include mussels and a group of striped beakfish. In fact a specimen of the beakfish was kept and named the “tsunami fish” because of the incredible way it was raised aboard a fishing boat set out to sea by the earthquake.
There’s a worrying element behind this fascinating development. With big infrastructures on the world’s coastlines, the amount of stuff that can be washed away by a tsunami is pretty massive. Much of this material is plastic and highly durable. Combine that with the enormous pollution in our oceans and sea life has a selection of ready-made transport to choose from. It is kind of scary how all kinds of plastics and metals have made it easier for invasive species to travel across the ocean.
These transports are unlikely to decay anytime soon, since plastic pretty much lasts forever. More unexpected things could arrive on US shores over the coming years and the US ecosystem could get entirely out of whack.
8. Manganese Balls
A group of German scientists discovered something very unusual on the Atlantic Ocean floor in 2015. They were using an epibenthic sled which is a fancy name for a sample-collecting apparatus which is dragged along the bottom. To their surprise the sled collected a payload of manganese nodules. These objects are mainly ball-shaped and are formed when metal ore crystallizes onto things like fossils and rocks.
You would normally see balls of that size in regions like the Pacific, so to find them in the Atlantic was quite an eye opener. They carry important archaeological and geological information because they are thought to form over millions of years. They can be as small as a golf ball or as big as a bowling ball. As well as manganese, the balls contain other metals such as zinc or cobalt. But that isn’t the end of the story.
The scientists found a huge number of the balls, forming an enormous field. This is great news for tech companies because the metals are a vital element in the manufacture of things like smartphones. Next time you’re using your phone, think about what it takes to get that device to work the way it does!

Skatepark Rules for Raymond, WA; Not as many rules needed here to follow
With all the effort put into the half pipes, it seems that they could have almost made a full bowl. I'm amazed at how every skatepark looks very different from the next in each city.
A lot of these skateparks are relatively new.in cities. It takes a lot of work to put together the funding needed to get them going. Also, there is a lot of debate on where and how to build them.
In the end when they are made, they still don't seem to stop skateboarders from skating where they feel like. There are plenty of videos around that show them breaking rules and making adults angry.
I think the noise from the slapping and cracking of wheels on pavement is too alarming to ignore. Even the rolling of wheels on pavement is very loud at times. They really draw a lot of attention to themselves based on the sound they project alone.
