Japan Day 8 Shibuya, Senso-Ji Temple, Ginza, Tokyo Tower! || CEBUANA ADVENTURES
We dedicated this day for a tour of the city! We had breakfast in Shibuya, went to church, went to a temple, visited Ginza, Looked for the Tokyo Tower, and then had wagyu in Shinjuku!
APOLOGIES for the shaky take. I'm starting to stay away from the stablizer on my editor since that tends to zoom into the videos. Still getting a hang of taking videos. They will be better in the future! On the other hand, you can choose to look at my pictures instead lol

New Years Eve in Shibuya Crossing! Japan Trip Episode 1 - Yokohama and Tokyo
For our annual end of the year trip, Shawn and I traveled through Japan for 23 days. We bought the JR Rail Pass, first class tickets so we could take the bullet trains all over the country in comfort. It wasn't cheap, but it was very convenient and nice to not have to pay for each individual trip.
We landed in Haneda Airport and took the train to the Yokohama Station right near our hotel for two nights. We ate at my favorite places in Yokohama, Wako Tonkatsu and Yoshimuraya Ramen. We also went to the Cupnoodles museum which was just ok. We met up with my friend Beverly and she showed us around Chinatown and had some Chinese food for dinner.
Next we took the train to Tokyo and stayed for three nights. We went to the digital art museum, met up with my friends Suki and Hiro, also Shawn's friend Gisele, we all went to the Asakusa Temple, Ueno, and Shinjuku. For New Years Eve Shawn and I met up with some of his friends at Shibuya Crossing to celebrate the New Year.
It was a very busy first five nights in Japan, but so much more to come.

The title says it all. This is just around the corner from the Tokyo Tower. Very cool place.
Kyoto Walk - Kodaiji Temple (高台寺) - 4K
In this video we’ll show you Kodaiji Temple (高台寺), Kyoto.
Kodai-ji Temple is located north east of Yasaka Hokanji Temple at the foot of Higashiyama Ryozen Mountains in Kyoto. It is officially called Kodaiji-jushozenji Temple. The temple was established in 1606 by Kita-no-Mandokoro (1548-1624) in memory of her late husband Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-1598). Kita-no-Mandokoro was also known as Nene. She later became a priestess and assumed the name of Kodaiin Kogetsuni. In July 1624, Sanko Osho from Kenninji Temple was welcomed as the principal monk and the temple was then named Kodai-ji. Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616) (the first Tokugawa shogun) financed the construction of the temple, resulting in its magnificent appearance.

Kyoto's Golden Kinkakuji vs Silver Ginkakuji ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Kyoto is Japan’s cultural capitol and home to over 2000 temples & shrines to visit, but it’s hard to know which ones to see when you only have a few days. This time, Kansai resident Kevin Riley and I debate two of the most visited zen Buddhist temples: Kinkakuji vs Ginkakuji
▶︎ KINKAKU-JI (1397)
Kinkakuji is called the “Golden Pavilion” or Golden Temple and is the more popular of the two because of its iconic gold leaf exterior. It was built in 1397.
★ PROS: It’s one of the famous scenes in Japan
★ CONS: It’s too crowded except for the first 15 minutes of the day. The surrounding gardens are kind of boring compared to other temples & shrines and there isn’t much to do in the area. Few shops and restaurants. There is no subway or train nearby. It can take up to an hour to arrive by bus from JR Kyoto Station when there is traffic.
● Google map:
▶︎ GINKAKU-JI (1490)
Ginkakuji is called the “Silver Pavilion” or Silver Temple and is located on the East side of Kyoto and the start to the famous “Philosopher's Path” which eventually gets you to Kiyomizudera. Ginkakuji was supposed to be covered in silver foil but the Shogun who was building it died before it’s completion and the decision not to complete it give it a wabi-sabi aesthetic to it. It has a sand garden and a hilltop view.
★ PROS: Less crowded than Kinkakuji and the building is surrounded with tree giving it a more zen-like feel / connection to nature. It’s on the East side of the city meaning there is more to do, a shopping street and loads of restaurants outside. The grounds are well groomed, not paved. Lovely moss. Sand garden and small bamboo outcrop near the restrooms.
★ CONS: It’s slightly more expensive than Kinkakuji. The walk from the bus station take 10-12 minutes to arrive on foot.

How to get to Kinkakuji:
Take the bus in front of JR Kyoto Station. Take bus 101 or 205 (220 yen / $2 / 40-50 minutes)
* There is usually a long queue to ride this bus after 10am.
Take the JR Sanin Main Line to Emmachi Station (2 stops) then grab a taxi (900-1000 yen / $9-$10 / 7 minutes) Total time: 25-30 minutes. You can also take the Metro Karasuma Line from JR Kyoto station to Kitaoji then grab a taxi.

Kunozan Tosho-Gu - Shizuoka - 久能山東照宮 - 4K Ultra HD
Founded in 1617 on top of Mount Kuno (216m) by Suruga Bay, Kunozan Tosho-Gu is a Shinto shrine and the original burial place of famous Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616) who brought a long period of civil wars to an end and united all of Japan. Having spent the last decade of his life at the nearby Sumpu Castle, Ieyasu expressed his wish for a mausoleum on Mount Kunozan, the site of an ancient Buddhist temple named Kuno-ji dating from the early Nara period.
While accessible via a ropeway, Kunozan Tosho-Gu main approach is actually located by the sea and involves a considerable climb of over a thousands stone steps up to the mountain, which also gives you an impressive view of the Suruga Bay itself.

Kamakura - Jason in Japan
EDIT 3/21/11: The north-east coast of Japan was severely affected by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami. Please consider making a donation to the Japanese Red Cross Society to help the victims of this natural disaster:
---------------------
Kamakura is a small city located 45 minutes southwest from Tokyo. It provides a close escape to view various shrines and temples without having to deal with huge crowds found in Tokyo. This small city is home to a few temples. This video explores a bit of Engaku-ji and Kencho-ji, which are within short walking distance of Kamakura station. Unfortunately, I was unable to reach the Daibutsu in time.

☆Bits of knowledge〜Jizou〜
Zojo-ji Temple sits just under the Tokyo Tower and this contrast of old and new is impressive. But for me, the most beautiful, saddest and unique part of the temple is the rows and rows of clothed and decorated jizo statues, situated to the right of the main temple building.

Toshogu Shrine - Nikko - 日光東照宮 - 4K Ultra HD
The Toshogu Shrine in Nikko is a very popular tourist attraction for both Japanese and foreigners alike. It is the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate that ruled Japan for over 250 years.
The shrine consists of more than a dozen buildings located in a beautiful forest outside the main city. The design and complexity of the shrine’s decorations are unique, and a marked contrast to the typically simple and understated shrines in Japan. The architectural design of this shrine spread to other locations such as the Nezu Shrine in Tokyo or the Toshogu Shrine of Ueno.
For those who are adventurous and don’t mind climbing some stairs, you can follow the path to the tomb of Ieyasu. There you will find Nemurineko, a famous carving of a sleeping cat. While the tomb isn’t as spectacular as the shrine, the surrounding forest gives the tomb an eerie mystic feeling, making it worth your walk to get there.

Japan Trip 2014 Tokyo Gokoku-ji
Gokoku-ji (護国寺) is a Shingon Buddhist temple in Tokyo's Bunkyō.
History
This Buddhist temple was established by the fifth shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, who dedicated it to his mother. It is notable for surviving the American air raids during World War II, whereas most other historical sites in Tokyo were turned into rubble.

- Wikipedia -
Kanda Shrine (神田明神 Kanda-myōjin?, formerly 神田神社 Kanda-jinja), is a Shinto shrine located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan. The shrine dates back 1,270 years, but the current structure was rebuilt several times due to fire and earthquakes. It is situated in one of the most expensive estate areas of Tokyo. Kanda Shrine was an important shrine to both the warrior class and citizens of Japan, especially during the Edo period, when shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu paid his respects at Kanda Shrine.

Yanaka Cemetery, in the Yanaka district of Taito ward, is one of Tokyo's most famous graveyards and has the feel of a park with its profuse foliage, including a beautiful alley of cherry trees: a very popular spot in spring when the overhanging branches are heavy with bright blossom. Yanaka Cemetery is also a beauty spot in autumn, with its many deciduous trees, including numerous gingkos.
Kanagawa Kamakura Yabusame Matsuri - 流鏑馬 - 4K Ultra HD
Kanagawa Kamakura Yabusame Matsuri - 流鏑馬 : It was in the 12th Century, that Kamakura quickly became a city of both Japanese politics and culture, as influential as Kyoto, with the iconic Tsurugaoka Hachimangu temple at its center. Because of its influence, Kamakura gathered a powerful army and as such had to train its troops and samurais in the latest combat techniques with “Yabusame” or horseback archery at one of the main disciplines.
Created and perfected in Kamakura, during what historians call the ‘Kamakura Period’ (1185-1333), Yabusame came from the alarming lack of archery skills of Shogun Minamoto’s Yoritomo samurais. Made mandatory for its skilled warriors, Yabusame became one of Japan’s martial arts as well as a part of its cultural heritage with Yabusame events taking place all across Japan every year.

Shogun's Procession in Kawaguchi, Japan [iPhone 4S/HD]
Route 122, which connects central Tokyo and Iwatsuki, Saitama and is also known as Iwatsuki Road, was once called as Nikko Onari-Michi that literally means Nikko Shogunate Road. During the Edo Period ruled by the Tokugawa Shogunate, the successive shoguns made processions along the road. It was to visit Nikko, where Ieyasu Tokugawa, the first shogun of the shogunate, is enshrined. The procession took place 17 times from 1617 to 1843. Although it was initially frugal, it increasingly became glamorous to show citizens their dignity. The procession held in 1728 by Yoshimune Tokugawa, the eighth shogun, was made up of 133 thousand people consisting of the shogunate family and their retinue. Some of shoguns were not able to cope with the cost of making a procession and had to give it up.
The road passes through my city Kawaguchi, located in just north of Tokyo. There were once two inn towns in the section where now the city is; Kawaguchi Inn Town and Hatogaya Inn Town. The first several processions went along Nikko Road, a more easterly route. However, Iemitsu Tokugawa, the third shogun who was known as a gourmet, changed the route to have his first day's lunch of the four day trip to Nikko, at a temple in Kawaguchi Inn Town. The temple might have served good lunch.
Nikko Onari-Michi Festival was held on an autumn Sunday in Kawaguchi City, to re-enact the historical parade. The festival had two sites; Kawaguchi Inn site and Hatogaya Inn site, and the parade moved the one to the other by subway. It was probably the first shogun's procession in the history which took a train. A few big names, including Ken Matsudaira, a famous period drama actor, and Rino Sashihara, who was once a member of the pop group AKB48 and is now a member of HKT48, also joined the parade and excited the crowd. Although the number of the people making the procession was quite smaller than the ones which took place several hundred years ago, 180 thousand spectators gathered at the sites to see the old but new procession, that was more friendly than before. They did not have to kneel but cheered when the procession passed by.
