Daibutsu at Seiryu-ji Temple in Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture
A very cold and windy day in April 2016 we drove from Misawa to Aomori to visit Seiryu-ji with friends Minori and John Baker.
There are over 20 large Buddha across Japan, each one having its own special feature. The Aomori Daibutsu, built in 1984, sits at 21.35m, and weighs 220 tons. Its insō, or hand positions, symbolizes the state of meditation. Ryuko Oda, a Buddhist priest and founder of Seiryu-ji Temple petitioned for its construction as a reminder of gratitude to those who died during WWII and as a symbol of Buddha’s teaching: the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path.

Afternoon in Aomori
The guys are hungry for some ramen and go searching for a very popular restaurant in Aomori with a special dish: Butter Ramen!! An Aomori specialty and damn is it good! Then the guys head over to the visitor center by the famous Aomori bridge for an unobstructed view of the city from the observation deck. After a full day of hangin' out, they grab a quick beer and board the train back to Misawa. This is the final of a 3-part Aomori episode.

Japan's Great Buddha ☆ Tochoji Temple Daibutsu, Fukuoka ☆ 福岡の東長寺大仏 ☆ Japan As It Truly Is
Tochoji has Japan's mammoth wooden Giant Buddha! This Daibutsu is 10.8m tall, weighs 30 tons, took 4 years to carve and was completed in 1992. Tōchōji is in the Gion area of Fukuoka City and is the oldest Buddhist Shingon temple in Kyushu. And seeing the Great Buddha (大仏, Daibutsu) is just 50 yen!
The temple was founded by Kukai in 806 AD.
This Tochoji Great Buddha is also a must-see, although the Todaiji in Nara and Kotokuin in Kamakura are much more famous.
Even so, this temple is mostly unknown to the tourist guide books, self-proclaimed experts, and even many of the Japanese nearby. It is never crowded with tourists, and easily accessible from the Fukuoka City Gion subway stop (Exit #1). Aside from the Great Buddha, you can see an expansive prayer area, pagoda, and small historical graveyard that has Kuroda 3 lords who ruled the area.
Be sure to go through the pitch black tunnel in the back and try and find your way out.
Open 9 AM - 4:45 PM.
There is a 50 yen charge to see the Buddha.

Chosho-ji - Aomori - 長勝寺 - 4K Ultra HD
Choso-ji is Horisaki’s second most important temple and as such is worthy of your consideration. Choso-ji was built in 1629 by the second Lord Nobuhira. Located in a unique district of Hirosaki and also known as Zenringai, the temple is surrounded by 33 Zen Sotoshu temples, most of which are not accessible to the public. Choso-ji stands out from the crowd thanks to its gorgeous 16.2m high sanmon and a hall filled with wooden statues of the 500 disciples of Buddha!
