What to See
Located near Lyon, the Sanctuary of St. John Vianney contains several sites of interest to pilgrims and tourists alike. It has two churches: the old 12th-century church (Église) where St. John Vianney preached, and a new basilica (Basilique) that displays his preserved body in a glass case. The saint's heart is enshrined in a smaller separate building, the Shrine of the Cure's Heart.
Pilgrims can also visit the home of the Curé of Ars, which was preserved the way he left it. It contains the very bed set on fire by the devil as well as the saint's rosary, breviary, library and other personal items. Other sights include the Underground Church designed for large groups of pilgrims, a film on the life and work of the saint, a wax museum, and the orphanage founded by the Curé (La Providence).

Curé d'Ars marks saint's 150th anniversary
Ars-sur-Formans is a village settled in the beautiful landscape of the Val de Saône, in France. With a current population of approximately 1200 people, its destiny was radically changed by the Curé d'Ars.Its shrine became an important destination for pilgrims in France and from all around the world. Pilgrimages began while Jean Marie Vianney was still alive and, before he died, the number pilgrims that visited every year had reached 100,000. He was canonized in 1925 by Pope Pius XI, who proclaimed him the patron saint of parish priests. For Fr. Antoine Hardy, the current curé (or pastor) of Ars, the center of the pilgrimage is the encounter with the saint in the Chapel of the Heart, where a highly symbolic relic is preserved. It is a very significant relic for us because it is not a finger or an eye; it is truly the heart of the Curé dArs filled with love, the heart of a pastor filled with love for all his parishioners. And we must try to make our hearts beat in harmony with the heart of St. Jean Marie Vianney, which was very close to the heart of Jesus. At the beginning of the 20th century, the body of the saint was exhumed. Since then, his body has remained intact. It was exposed in a reliquary with his face coated with a layer of wax a manner worthy of the saints spirituality given the sobriety that characterized his life. Here also remains the history presbytery that now accommodates a museum. This presbytery may be considered unimportant; it is obviously less important than the church. However, it did witness a spiritual struggle. There are passages struggles with the devil that he called 'grapples' that occurred within these walls. We perceive that it is a place of poverty, meditation and spiritual struggle.During his visit in 1986, John Paul II said that to edify the Church, this is what the Curé d'Ars did in this village. A century after his death, the Church of Our Lady of Mercy was built a modern structure with the capacity to welcome more than 1500 people. Current estimates indicate that 400,000 thousand pilgrims visit the shrine every year.

Travel through time to the 19th century parish church of Ars, France, in this dramatic presentation of Vianney Speaks, performed by Leonardo Defilippis. There you will witness firsthand the inspiring sermons and intimate prayers of Saint John Vianney that vividly illustrate the human frailty, humility and fervor of the patron saint of parish priests. Born on the eve of the French Revolution, John Vianney witnessed the intense persecution of the Church, and the heroism of the priests who risked their lives during that era to deliver the sacraments.
Ordained a priest himself against all odds, he spent the rest of his life as the pastor of the tiny village of Ars, where, through his personal holiness and sacrifice, he converted not just the entire population of the town, but countless pilgrims from near and far. A hundred thousand people a year came to Ars just to be in the presence of a saint, to have their sins forgiven through confession, and to hear him preach.
Vianney Speaks is a cinematic presentation of the historic sermons and prayers of St. John Vianney, including a full orchestral score.

Incorruptible Body: Saint Jean Marie Vianney
Certain Saints, at the time of their death or many years later after they were exhumed, were found to be incorruptible. That is to say, their bodies did not decompose. There are more than 250 incorrupt bodies of Catholic Saints.
St John Vianney's Residence Ars, France
St. John Vianney's residence sits a stones throw away from the Church. Here I quickly walk through the door and: peek into his humble kitchen; go up the wooden staircase to see his room on the left; down the hall with two rooms on the right (the second room has the bed burnt by the devil, or as Vianney said, the 'Grappin', and the original coffin which he must have been buried in); and I exit down the opposite stair way.
The icon at the end of the video was painted by iconographer Marek Czarneckiis, and is being used by the USCCB for the 'Year for Priests.
The beautiful song, 'Sacerdotes Domini', is by the great Benedictine Sisters, Mary Queen of the Apostles. They have CD's for purchase at All proceeds go to help build their future priory in rural Missouri.
St. John Mary Vianney Patron of all the Priests of the World (SNS)
St. John Vianney, Priest (Patron of priests) Feast day - August 4 Universally known as the Cure of Ars), St. John Mary Vianney was ordained a priest in 1815. Three years later he was made parish priest of Ars, a remote French hamlet, where his reputation as a confessor and director of souls made him known throughout the Christian world. His life was one of extreme mortification.
Accustomed to the most severe austerities, beleaguered by swarms of penitents, and besieged by the devil, this great mystic manifested a imperturbable patience. He was a wonderworker loved by the crowds, but he retained a childlike simplicity, and he remains to this day the living image of the priest after the heart of Christ.
He heard confessions of people from all over the world for the sixteen hours each day. His life was filled with works of charity and love. It is recorded that even the staunchest of sinners were converted at his mere word. He died August 4, 1859, and was canonized May 31, 1925.
France: Paray-le-Monial
Paray-le-Monial is a commune in the Saône-et-Loire department in the region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in eastern France.
Paray existed before the monks who gave it its surname of Le Monial, for when Count Lambert of Chalon, together with his wife Adelaide and his friend Mayeul de Cluny, founded there in 973 the celebrated Benedictine priory, the borough had already been constituted, with its ædiles and communal privileges. At that time an ancient temple was dedicated to the Mother of God (Charter of Paray). The Cluny monks were, 999-1789, lords of the town.
The town is mainly known for its Romanesque church of the Sacré-Coeur (Sacred Heart) and as a place of pilgrimage. It was built from the 12th century as a small-scale version of the Abbey of Cluny. It was finished in the 14th century, while the cloister dates to the 18th century.
The Hôtel de Ville, in Renaissance style, is also one of the historical monuments.
Another major building in Paray-le-Monial, is Saint Nicolas' tower, built during the 16th century, which hosts different exhibitions but mainly mosaic exhibitions.
The river Bourbince passes Paray-le-Monial in front of the basilica.
