Salt Water Taffy To Become New Jersey's Official State Candy?
Nothing says the Jersey Shore like salt water taffy! In fact, it is so well known in the Garden State that a few elementary school students from Sayreville, New Jersey want to make salt water taffy New Jersey's official state candy.
These 5th graders from Sayreville mean business and they plan on getting their candy legislation put into law by Governor Christie.
Assemblyman John Wisnewski led the kids into a committee room where they stated their case for why salt water taffy should be New Jersey's state candy by law. The ambitious kids stated their reasons, and one of them even dressed up as Mr. Bradley.
I am Mr. Bradley, and legend has it that in 1880 I was a young candy merchant on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. One evening, a storm flooded my store and soaked all of my candy in salt water. A young girl came the next day to buy some taffy. I jokingly asked her, 'Would you like some salt water taffy?' and the rest is history, the 5th grader read while dressed up in character.

Go Local: Ocean City, NJ
Go Local lets you experience different areas of the great Garden State. We tell the stories you will not see on the news. The segments feature the people that help make each local area unique. In our first segment we head down the shore to check out the town recently named New Jerseys best beach community, Ocean City. We take a tour of a company that has become a local landmark and see how they make salt water taffy.
We focus on producing segments rather than full television shows. Each segment is a perfect fit as a plug-in for a news-wheel channel, on-demand or for web content. The segments have the feel of a full TV show, and could be combined to create a half-hour. Most of the content is not dated, and could be brought back into rotation time and time again. We produce these segments using talented Producers, who shoot, write and edit. This one-man-band or VJ approach helps to cut production costs without sacrificing quality. In this case, the Go Local segment was shot, written, and edited by one Producer. We did use a host for the track and standups. But our Producers can also track these stories or creat nat packages, using only the interviews they get and natural sound to tell the story.

Made in Our Hometown: Dollywood's Taffy Master
Master Candy Maker Linda Rice pre-dates the Sweet Shoppe where Dollywood's visitors come to see her every day. Rice says, I've been here since it was Silver Dollar City and this park has grown every year, this park just amazes me. That was 34 seasons ago and ever since, kids and adults have been loving her taffy.
I like doing this taffy, there is no other thing I'd rather do, than this taffy, this has always been my baby.
The colorful confection starts with a few ingredients: corn syrup, sugar, half a pound of butter and whichever flavor you are making. Today it's orange. And temperature is a top priority. We cooked it up to 249 degrees. Then we poured it out here on the table, cold water circulates through the table and helps cool it down.
The puller becomes the candy shoppe's main attraction, adding air to the mixture so it can get it's goo. After about eight minutes, the sticky sweet is ready for the next vintage machine, where the taffy is pulled, cut and wrapped. You get 20 pounds and that's a little over 1200 pieces when it's all cut and wrapped.
When they tell me they like it and tell me it's the best taffy they've ever tasted, that is really cool, Rice says.

Taffy Town Production Process
Watch how all of your taffy gets made from beginning to end! This video takes you through the cooking, designing, cut & wrap, quality control and packaging processes here at Taffy Town.
The Taffy Town Difference
For over 100 years we’ve been doing what we love—making candy. Originally known as the Glade Candy Company, our founder, James Glade, started a candy business that developed a variety of candy. Offering everything from hard candies to chocolates and more, we were a full-line candy manufacturer. Then in the 1990’s David Glade, his grandson, decided to change our name to Taffy Town, Inc. and focus all our candy-making efforts on total taffy excellence.
Never looking back, we’ve developed a process that is uniquely Taffy Town. Unlike other taffy makers who pull their taffy, we use a whipped process. Complete with a whipped meringue, our taffy is a softer and chewier piece than the traditional taffy. We aim for a fluffy taffy that’s easy to eat without leaving bits of candy stuck in between your teeth.
Along with our rare taffy-making process, we also have over 90 different flavors of taffy. With new flavors like maple-bacon and chili-mango, we’re constantly developing out-of-this-world flavors that push the status quo. Our new and exciting flavors are great additions to our taffy family, but our customers are continually loyal to our standard flavors like banana and peppermint.
Another new development we are excited about is our newest line, Simply Taffy. For the first time ever, we’ve combined our whipped process with real fruit puree for an all-natural, real-fruit taste. With 100% natural flavors and no artificial coloring, Simply Taffy has everything expected from Taffy Town’s gourmet saltwater taffy without any of the artificial flavoring.
Ultimately, the reason we do what we love is making our customers happy. It pushes us to improve our candy-making process, create new dynamic flavors and focus on the classics.
