The Battle of Nashville - Civil War - Shy's Hill (2017)
The Battle of Nashville was a two-day battle in the Franklin-Nashville Campaign that represented the end of large-scale fighting west of the coastal states in the American Civil War. It was fought at Nashville, Tennessee, on December 15–16, 1864, between the Confederate Army of Tennessee under Lieutenant General John Bell Hood and Federal forces under Major General George H. Thomas. In one of the largest victories achieved by the Union Army during the war, Thomas attacked and routed Hood's army, largely destroying it as an effective fighting force.

Images of Nashville, 1864
In 1864 Civil War photographers Jacob Coonley and George Barnard were in Nashville and managed to get some interesting images of the City of Nashville and surrounding area. On the 15th and 16th of December there is a battle going on when some of these images were taken.

Nashville 1864 : American Civil War
Photo Montage Music Video for songwriter Kevin Sysyn's American Civil War song Nashville 1864
The Battle of Nashville in 1864.... , historians agree, truly marked the beginning of the end of the American Civil War. With the loss at Nashville the CSA's military presence in the West melted away and the colossal Union armies marched East to the inevitable grim conclusion....
This slide show contains photographs from throughout the Civil War. I particularly wanted to show the fighting man and his world. This project was not a political statement. I let the pictures do the talking. It was difficult to find good images of Confederate life at war. The true identity location etc of a many photos is unknown. In most cases the where and who makes little difference. A few compelling scenes were of questionable quality, please forgive those shortcomings and the fact that I'm no genius when it comes to making music videos. I just hope you get the picture.
What I found in putting this together is that the plain people are the ones who suffered and died in the War. And I found that the CSA was so outgunned, outnumbered and out-spent that it was amazingly heroic that they fought on as long as they did. For example, looking at the photos you will instantly recognize the Confederate fighters by their lack of uniforms. The Union soldiers are all uniformed.
There were a million+ children affected by the war and families behind every man. I am particularly moved by that. The photo showing black children in front of two large caldrons was taken on an antebellum plantation. The very short young boy in the hat is said to be a Confederate in Nashville.
The last frame on the slide-show is of a drummer boy. There were very many soldiers on both sides in the 14-15yr-old range; drummer boys were often younger. And of course there were hundreds of thousands of orphans. I find the orphan girl with her Dad's picture heartbreaking and evocative of the tragic story of the children in war which is, though never told in history, the most horrific story of all..... And then there's the black girl lovingly holding the white baby.
The white woman in Antebellum dress was actually a Confederate spy by the name of Belle Boyd The frame following is of slaves picking cotton on a Georgia plantation in 1860; hence it's dubious quality.
The disturbing photograph of the severed limbs was taken off the end of the table in a Union hospital tis said.

The song Nashville 1864 I wrote on my first night in that city. I was in a motel room having just arrived and was wanting something to eat and when I opened the door to go out it was raining really hard; so I couldn't get to my car without being drenched. Trapped in the room to wait out the storm I put on the TV and looked at some local papers. One article I saw was about the Battle of Nashville Monument which had been restored. And I thought, I know something about that battle. I started strumming my guitar and the song came out. I put it on cassette right then and there. As I struggled with the lyrics I kept checking the weather cuz I was gawd-awful hungry. It continued to rain in droughts. And I thought When it rains in Tennessee it pours. When it Rains in Tennessee was the original title.
Later I found the monument people and was invited to a Nashville gentleman's home in Belle Mead and played it for him in his library. A few days later they paid me $300(?) to sing it at the re-dedication of the Nashville 1864 Monument. I renamed the song Nashville 1864.
That's as close to success as I ever came in Nashville.
I put the song on a C&W album at koolmusic.com
