We are talking about dozens or hundreds of buildings, specialists sometimes argue about this (number). But the key factor is not just the quantity, but also the coherence of this (constructivist) space.

6. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Igor Yankov, Historian:
Here, the creation of new world was taking place through these functional structures. Here, we can see a living area of different quality. And we can see various social services detached: that's a cafeteria, that's a club, that's a bathhouse, that's a laundry, that's a kindergarten and so on, and so on.

The Post Office, I found it a very striking landmark. Because it's obvious, it's located in the centre. It's such a great representative. However, also noticing this hotel, Iset. It's also great in the form like a half-circle.

When you remove plaster from the walls, there are wires going through everywhere. Possibly the Chekists' wiretapping (workers) sat here. Like in the famous Soviet poster 'No talking'.

14. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Ildar Zalessky, Tour Guide:
Why some (managing) companies do not want to let us into the Chekists' Town so we can show and tell about it? Because if you look at the ceiling and these old columns, you can see the condition they are in. Professional constructors who followed me through the Chekists' Town said looking at this (ceiling), that for 30-40 years it will be staying. After 50 years, it will collapse.

Here was some sort of dining, sitting room where guests could be received. Or a workplace could be located here. Then a transitional area in this part, here is ventilation, where a kitchen board was, so the place for cooking. And there was a bedroom where a bed or two were and some wardrobe, which could be under these stairs. And indeed, here was everything for living.

How to Tame a Fox and Build a Dog, Harvard Natural History Museum, April 2017
The New York Times Book Review had this to say about How to Tame a Fox and Build a Dog (
“Sparkling new book...Part science, part Russian fairy tale and part spy thriller... It may serve - particularly now - as a parable of the lessons that emerge from unfettered science, if we have the courage to let it unfold.”
For the last six decades a dedicated team of researchers in Siberia has been domesticating silver foxes to replay the evolution of the dog in real time. Lyudmila Trut has been lead scientist on this work since 1959, and together with biologist and historian of science, Lee Dugatkin, she tells the inside story of the science, politics, adventure and love behind it all. Like a set of Russian nesting dolls, How to Tame a Fox {and Build a Dog} opens up to reveal story after story, each embedded within the one that preceded it. Inside this tale of path-breaking science in the midst of the often brutal -35° winters of Siberia is hidden a remarkable collaboration between an older, freethinking scientific genius and a trusting, but gutsy young woman. Together these two risked not just their careers, but to an extent their lives, to make scientific history. If you go one level deeper, you find yourself lost in the magical tale of how some hardscrabble but openhearted humans and the wild animals who they domesticated developed such deep attachments to each other that both seemed to forget the species divide between them.
