GERMANY: Sigmaringen, city castle [HD]
Sigmaringen Castle dominates the skyline of the town of Sigmaringen. The castle was rebuilt following a fire in 1893, and only the towers of the earlier medieval fortress remain.
The modern Schloss Sigmaringen owes its current size and appearance to three construction periods:
- The medieval castle from the 11th to 13th centuries, built under the Counts of Sigmaringen-Spitzenberg and Spitzenberg-Helfenstein.
- The renovations and expansion of the castle under Counts of Werdenberg.
- The renovations to make the castle into a princely residence for the Princes of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen
The castle and museums may be visited throughout the year, but only on guided tours (in German only). The castle rooms, fully furnished, give the visitor a taste of the lifestyle of the nobility in previous centuries. The Hall of Weapons displays one of the largest private weapon collections in Europe.
Sigmaringen is located on the southern edge of the Swabian Alb, a plateau region in southern Baden-Württemberg. The castle was built below the narrow Donau (English: Danube) river valley.

Sigmaringen Castle, part 1
First mentioned in 1077, the former medieval fortress, perched high upon o cliff overlooking the Danube river, developed over time into the impressive castle we see today. Different architectural styles ranging from the Early Middle Ages to Jugendstil combine to form the imposing outer appearance of the castle.
Renowned as the official ancestral seat of the counts and princes of Hohenzollern since 1535, Sigmaringen castle has played a significant role in the chronicles of world history.
The Hohenzollern lineage is numbered among the oldest and most aristocratic in Germany.

Postcards From Germany: Sigmaringen Castle
Sigmarengen Castle on the Danube River in Germany is a wonder on the mount! It was first mentioned in the year 1077 in the chronicles of Petershausen monastery... and like pretty much any castle still standing, has a long history of expansions, renovations and uses.
I decided to share how I went about photographing this mighty spot - to get both the grandeur AND the more intimate side of it with my fab Fujifilm cameras and lenses. Fun!
Sigmaringen Castle, part 2
As a member of the German high nobility, Karl Anton needed a centerpiece of his elegant castle. To create this, in 1872 he had the Parisian architect Lambert rebuild the dining hall into the French Hall (German: Französische Saal). In 1877 he expanded the central keep, removed the old roof and topped the keep with a new pointed roof. In the following year, the Ancestors' Hall (German: Ahnensaal) was rebuilt.

This castle is beautiful, you can't miss it as it looms over the town. The entrance is a marvel in itself, full of trophies from hunts! You buy your ticket at the top of the entrance and then wait for your guide as a tour can only be done with a guide, the tours are in German but I was given a booklet to follow which explained everything about the various rooms. The inner courtyard is lovely, entering the castle takes you up some beautiful stairs and through rooms that have been used by a branch of the family Hohenzollern at one time.You even get to see the bathroom which was very modern.
A walk around the castle takes you through the town and past the Danube, the castle sits on a very high peak and it looks enormous as you view it from the riverbank.
This castle is well worth a visit.

Sigmaringen werd voor het eerst vermeld in 1077, toen Rudolf van Zwaben de Sigmaringse burcht belegerde. De stad werd in 1250 formeel gesticht en kwam in 1270 in bezit van de graven van Montfort. De plaats ging in 1290 over op de Habsburgers en werd in 1325 verkocht aan Ulrich III van Württemberg. Het kwam in 1399 in het bezit van de graven van Werdenberg en in 1534 van Karel I van Hohenzollern. Na opdeling van het gebied van de Zwabische Hohenzollern in 1576 werd Sigmaringen residentie van het graafschap, sinds 1623 vorstendom Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen.
Vorst Karel Anton stond zijn land in 1849 aan Pruisen af. Sigmaringen maakte hierna deel uit van het Regierungsbezirk Sigmaringen. In 1945/1946 werd de stad door de Franse bezetters bij de deelstaat Württemberg-Hohenzollern gevoegd, die in 1952 opging in Baden-Württemberg.
