Time Lapse Photography of Nomad Kyrgyzstan: Travelling Where Mother Nature Outdid Herself

Kyrgyzstan is a Central Asian country situated west of China and south of Kazakhstan. It doesn't get much attention in the news and not many people know exactly where it is, but Kyrgyzstan houses some of the most spectacular displays of nature in Asia that you can sample in this time lapse display.
The Kyrgyz Republic is best described as an alpine playground. The total area of the country is just under 200,000 square kilometers (125,000 square miles) and 90% of that area is mountainous. One quarter of Kyrgyzstan's population lives in the capital city of Bishkek, leaving a lot of the mountains sparsely populated except for some friendly, wandering nomads and their herds of sheep and horses. It's like taking a walk into the wild segments of mother nature, one of the few that are left.
Kyrgyzstan is not only saturated with mountains, but boasts over 2,000 lakes. Many of these are small bodies of water tucked away into the folds of the mountains, but some of the larger, more famous lakes include Lake Issuk Kul, Lake Song Kul, and Lake Sary-Chelek. Issyk Kul is the second largest alpine lake in the world, stretching over 182km (113 miles) in length.
Visitors that travel in Kyrgyzstan can also enjoy rivers flowing through and down the mountains, reservoirs, canyons, rock formations, breathtaking mountain passes, and natural walnut groves. Kazarman Pass reaches so far into the clouds that it is like travelling through a passageway to another world. The walnut groves in Arslanbob are the single largest location of natural walnut growth in the world (11,000 hectares, 27,000 acres).
Kyrgyzstan is a land of untamed natural beauty. The nomads of Kyrgyzstan say that when God made the world and was doling out beauty to different places, when He finished, he had some left over and poured it out in Kyrgyzstan. So if you're looking for a place to travel to that will inspire you, see the reason for the legends. Take a walk on the wild side -- try Kyrgyzstan.

Of all the Central Asia countries (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Afghanistan), Kyrgyzstan's terrain and natural beauty is the most lush, wild, and unforgettable. This winter time-lapse video gives you just a glimpse of how beautiful life is in Kyrgyzstan. It sits quietly east of China and south of Kazakhstan in humble beauty. However, once you lay eyes on this country, you'll never stop talking about it.
Kyrgyzstan is 90% mountainous and is nicknamed the Alps of Central Asia. In the wintertime, the mountains of Kyrgyzstan have a commanding, yet peaceful presence that seems to make time stand still. The only thing that will remind you time is passing are the clouds that drift lackadaisically across the mountain peaks of the Tien Shan Celestial Mountains and the rippling waters of its lakes and rivers. Kyrgyzstan has a population of about 5.5 million, most of which reside in 3 or 4 of the larger cities, so once you step foot into the countryside, it's like taking a walk in the wild, remote and unexplored.
Kyrgyzstan is also filled with crystalline alpine lakes. There are just under 2,000 lakes scattered throughout the country, the most popular of which is Lake Issyk Kul. Issyk Kul literally means Hot Lake in Kyrgyz, not so much because it feels like a hot tub, but because even in the winter, it never freezes. It's the second largest alpine lake in the world with an area of 6,236 km² (2,408 sq miles).
Kyrgyzstan's nature is spectacular both for just viewing and enjoying, as well as for winter sports and trekking. Life is Kyrgyzstan is beautiful, so whether you're just relaxing or taking a walk on the wild side and seeking out an adventure, you'll want a camera with you at all times. It's truly a diamond in the rough, or as the people of Kyrgyzstan call it, the Pearl of Central Asia.

Bukhara was an oasis in the desert for Silk Road camel caravans long ago, and still is for modern travelers today. In Khiva, the Old Town called Ichon Qala looks much as it did centuries ago, while Nukus is known for its once-banned avant-garde Soviet art at the Savitsky Museum.
07:56 – TURKMENISTAN
Turkmenistan is a country of tribal culture and camels as well as modern cities and transportation. We visit three UNESCO-listed sites: Khorezm's Kunya Urgench and Kutlug-Timur Minaret, Merv, and the 2,000-year-old city of Nisa. Drive on the ancient silk route of Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia!
15-22 May 2019
W: motorover.in E: bookings@motorover.in T: +91-8390345646
Kyrgyzstan is one of the best-kept secrets of Central Asia. It is a magical land of snow-capped mountains that disappear into the clouds, alpine lakes with turquoise water, stunning gorges, glacial rivers and vast swathes of velvety grasslands dotted with wild horses and cattle grazing peacefully.
Located to the north of India, Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country but has the world’s second largest alpine lake, the Issyk-Kul.
This weeklong guided self-drive road trip of the silk route in Kyrgyzstan will start and end in the country’s bustling capital, Bishkek. A MotoRover tour manager will be in the 'lead' car for navigation and the group will be followed by the 'sweep' car with a mechanic and first-aid kit on board to ensure that you get the support required to explore this foreign land.
All the paved roads on our route were part of the ancient silk route that was used for transporting silk and spices from China to the European continent. However, the real beauty of Kyrgyzstan reveals itself only when you venture off-road. Our route has a mix of paved and dirt road driving that takes you through breath-taking landscapes and mountain passes.
That’s not all. carefully selected sights like the Tash Rabat caravanserai and cultural experiences like the traditional Kyrgyz horse games, carpet weaving show, eagle hunting show and the folklore show will give you an enriching insight into the nomadic lifestyle of the Kyrgyz.

Nomad Tours in Kyrgyzstan: Cooking & Cultural Traditions
Order silk road tours online at:
During a tour of nomadic Kyrgyzstan, you'll notice that traditional nomadic dinners are not merely about cooking and serving good food, but are also linked with cultural traditions.
During a celebration in which neighbors and guests are invited to share a meal in someone's yurt, the host often lays borsok (fried dough) out as a snack or appetizer before bringing out the meat. Other foods the host may present could include homemade jam, cream, small candies, or a healthy salad of cucumbers and tomatoes to name a few. When a sheep is prepared and brought out for the meal, each portion of the sheep has certain significance. The eldest in the group and guests of honor are shown respect by being presented with certain/the best cuts of meat. The more honor is due; the better cuts of meat are given. This video details how you may see meat divvied up and served to different guests during your own nomadic travels.
One tradition during a holiday celebration or party is for the men to take cuts of meat, shave the meat with their knives and add it to a streaming, fresh pile of noodles. The dish is then passed around and can be eaten with the guests' fingers. This dish is called besh barmak and literally means five fingers. It is one of the most famous traditional Kyrgyz dinners.
During your nomadic travels, realize that nomads in Kyrgyzstan are largely muslim and as such, incorporate two different things into their meals. First of all, halal meat is served. Halal food has been killed and prepared according to Islamic standards. This includes killing the animal swiftly and draining all the blood from the body. Besides serving halal meat, another tradition muslims in Kyrgyzstan practice is to say an amen after the meal. After the meal has been concluded, a prayer is said by holding uplifted hands in front of the body as if trying to cup water in them. Then, they bring their hands over their face as if washing their face with water they held in their hands. No one can leave until the amen has been said. On their way out, guests are usually given extra food to take home that can be eaten later as a snack or another meal.
When you're planning a nomadic tour around Central Asia and find yourself wanting to enjoy an ecotour, healthy meals, and experience nomadic traditions while traveling on a budget, then Kyrgyzstan is the perfect place for your journey.

Kyrgyzstan is the untouched Olympus of the world. It rests quietly on the Silk Road in between China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, holding itself high above sea level. Eighty-five percent of the country stands at over 1,000meters and 40% at over 4,000meters. Ninety percent of the country is mountainous, resembling a large blanket of terrain that someone scooped off level ground, bunched up and dropped in Central Asia.
The main mountain range that runs through Kyrgyzstan is the Tian Shan, otherwise known as the Celestial Mountains for the clouds that constantly drift across the mountain peaks.
This time lapse video showcases why Kyrgyzstan's natural beauty makes it such a rare jewel in Asia. Its atmosphere makes for a truly surreal road trip.
While the Kyrgyz Republic is mainly covered in mountains, there's more to the nature in Kyrgyzstan than just that. Snuggled into the mountains are hundreds of alpine lakes. The country's most famous lake is Issyk-Kul. Issyk-Kul and is the second largest alpine lake in the world (6,236 sq. km, 2,408 sq. miles) and received its name hot lake because despite its high elevation, it never freezes over in the winter. Other popular lakes are Sary-Chelek, Ak-Say, and Song Kul.
Canyons, reservoirs, and rock formations also draw visitors from all over the world. Fairytale (Skazka) Canyon is famous for its rock formations that convincingly imitate the shapes of a dragon, the Great Wall of China, a hippopotamus, a snake, and a castle to name a few. Jeti-Oguz is a village overshadowed by the figures of 7 enraged bulls paused in the nearby rock.
Even though there are many destinations people specifically visit in Kyrgyzstan, the truth of the matter is that the entirety of Kyrgyzstan's nature is a destination. Mountains, canyons, lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and rock formations, Kyrgyzstan has everything necessary for an epic road trip on the Silk Road. Scenery and life is beautiful in Kyrgyzstan.

90% of the country is classified as 'mountainous' (i.e more than 1500 meters above sea level). So, if you're wanting to trip into the heart of the mountains, it often makes sense to take a few days over it. In the summer months (June, July and August), Kyrgyz Republic also boasts some incredibly stable weather. Blue sky dry days are the norm here and the elevation of the mountains takes the edge off the heat in the valleys.
Participating in the Asia travels and Asia cruises, you can enjoy the beautiful nature of Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyz people are nomadic people, so riding is very common in Bishkek and Kyrgyzstan. When it comes to riding a horse in Kyrgyzstan, basically anywhere is great outside of Bishkek and Osh. Visiting Karakol as day trip in Kyrgyzstan
After spending several days focused on the World Nomad Games in Kyrgyzstan we decided to take a day trip to Karakol (Каракол) for a change of pace. Our trip focused on visiting some museums, mosques, cathedrals, markets and having a traditional Kyrgyz lunch inside of a yurt. We had ambitious plans of hiking, visiting a waterfall and few other things but we ran out of time. If you're going to visit Karakol learn from our mistake and spend a few more days to really enjoy the outdoor adventure activities.

It is time for a day trip because we've been spending a lot of time at the World Nomad Games and it is time to get out and get to know the country a little bit. So we're taking a day trip to Karakol (Каракол). We're going to be doing some hiking, visiting waterfalls. Yeah, it is going to be really cool. I mean we've seen quite a bit of the country but we haven't been to that area yet so we're really excited about it. Let's go.
Okay, so we have been driving for about two hours and we've almost made it to Karakol (Каракол). Right now we're in the outskirts and we're stopping at the Nikolay Mikhailovich Przhevalsky museum and basically this was a guy who wanted to be a traveler. So I can relate to him. Um, he was from Russia but at the time Russian didn't have the permission to just you know go off and wander around on their own. So this guy decided to join the military and he proposed to be the first person to explore Central Asia and reach Tibet and his proposal was approved so he was funded by Russia and today there is a museum dedicated to his work.
After a short visit to the museum, we then continued on our drive towards Karakol (Каракол), where our first stop was the Dungan Mosque.
So in order to visit the Mosque you don't just wear a scarf. You need a full cloak. This will be interesting. Alright. Let's put this on. Fancy. It is like velvet.
The mosque gets its name from the Dungan people who are Muslim, but of Chinese origin. The building is quite unique because you can see the two cultures colliding; it contains elements of a traditional mosque, but at first glance it looks more like a Buddhist temple.
So now we're visiting an Orthodox Church and that was really close to the mosque.
We then went to the Holy Trinity Cathedral, which is in the centre of Karakol (Каракол). Just remember, girls need to wear a head covering and boys must take off their hats in order to go inside.
From there we continued to the Karakol Market in search of food. If there’s one dish the town is known for it’s Ashlyan Fu, a cold noodle soup with spices and jellies. There’s a whole alley in the market that specializes in this dish; so be sure to try it.
Alright so we've had a pretty busy morning of sightseeing. Now it is time for food. Yeah, we've worked up a pretty big appetite and the coolest thing is we're going to go eat inside of yurt. A yurt.
For lunch we had Dumlyama: a dish with potatoes, cabbage, onions, peppers, and meat. We also had boorsok: which are little pieces of fried dough that go really nice with jam.
So we've stopped off at this kind of cool scenic area that is called Jeti-Ögüz and nearby there is apparently some fantastic hiking. Yeah, and the name translates to seven bulls so I don't know do you see any bulls over there? You know I see in the rock formations. I think I see more than seven things.
We had really been looking forward to hiking along here, but unfortunately, this is the part of the tour where we ran out of time. This also means we didn’t get to see the waterfalls we had heard about, so if you do decide to visit Karakol (قاراقول), don’t do it as a quick day trip like we did!
Yeah, I think it is the kind of place where you want to give it a few days so you can see the surrounding areas and also that town is really known for hiking so if you're in to outdoorsy stuff go there and explore it properly.
Yeah, maybe spend like two or three days in Karakol (Каракол) see the surroundings, hike, trek and yeah really explore it.

Motorover’s weeklong, guided motorcycle tour of the Silk Route in Kyrgyzstan starts and ends in the country’s bustling capital, Bishkek. There will be a MotoRover tour manager on the lead bike and the group will be followed by the sweep car that carries your luggage and has a mechanic and first-aid kit on board to ensure that you get the support required to explore this foreign land.
All the paved roads on this tour were part of the ancient silk route that was used for transporting silk and spices from China to the European continent. However, the real beauty of Kyrgyzstan reveals itself only when you venture off-road. Our route has a mix of paved and dirt road riding that takes you through breath-taking landscapes and mountain passes.
That’s not all, carefully selected sights like the Tash Rabat caravanserai and cultural experiences like the traditional horse games, carpet weaving, eagle hunting, lunch in a yurt (traditional Central Asian round tent) and the folklore show will give you an enriching insight into the nomadic lifestyle of the Kyrgyz.
