Police in the Luohu district of China’s southern city of Shenzhen released a video “confession” on Thursday, November 21, 2019, in an apparent attempt to discredit claims by a former British consulate employee in Hong Kong. The video released on social media showed Simon Cheng Man-kit, who was detained by mainland authorities for 15 days in August after visiting the mainland city just across the border from Hong Kong. Cheng has claimed he was tortured and pressed for information about activists in Hong Kong’s anti-government protests.

A former employee of the British consulate in hong kong said he was detained and tortured by Chinese secret police. The 29-year-old sat down with NTD and the epoch times to recount the nightmare inside china’s detention center.
“I know this is the place where they execute the torture. The interrogator, he spoke mandarin with a northern accent. He said to me, ‘the consulate is openly a spy agency. So you should know what is going on right now.
In here, there is no such thing as human rights.’”

Simon Cheng, Shame on you
In August 2019, Shenzhen police arrested Simon Cheng, a former British consulate worker in Hong Kong, on charges of soliciting prostitutes and sentenced him to 15 days of administrative detention. Mr. Zheng told the media that he had been tortured by Chinese police during detention in Shenzhen and was questioned about protests in Hong Kong and the role of the UK in it. A number of Hong Kong and British media outlets took the opportunity to politicize the incident and hype it, questioning the accusation that the police violated human rights by not informing his family and lawyers.

Inside China's 'thought transformation' camps - BBC News
The BBC has been given rare access to the vast system of highly secure facilities thought to be holding more than a million Muslims in China’s western region of Xinjiang.
Authorities there insist they are just training schools. But the BBC’s visit uncovers important evidence about the nature of the system and the conditions for the people inside it.
The BBC's China Correspondent John Sudworth sent this report.

CHINA: BEIJING: CLINTON TO ATTEND CHRISTIAN WORSHIP CHURCH SERVICE
Mandarin/Eng/Nat
U-S President Bill Clinton is to attend services on Sunday at a Beijing church, and the Chinese government is determined to display an open attitude towards Christian worship.
Urged on by American religious leaders, Clinton has promised to convey the message that China's Christians, Muslims and Tibetan Buddhists should all be allowed to worship free from government interference.
At Beijing's Chongwenmen Church, a place of worship officially recognised by the government, preparations are underway to greet the U-S president.
But what he won't see are thousands of unofficial places of worships, many of them in private homes, where the vast majority of China's Christians prefer to worship.
APTV visited both the official and unofficial side of China's Christian community to see if they feel persecuted by the communist leadership.
During the radical days of the Cultural Revolution, this type of religious ceremony would have been unheard of in communist China.
From the mid-1960s to the late 1970s scores of churches and places of worship across the country were closed -- many even destroyed.
Beijing's Chongwenmen church, where President Clinton will attend a service on Sunday, was allowed to reopen in 1982.
Then about 700 people gathered for the reopening service, compared with the 2-thousand-500 who now pack the church each week.
Still, China's largest Protestant church remains a humble sanctuary.
No steeple marks the squat grey building, reached by walking down narrow lanes barely wide enough for a car.
The service is held in the Chinese language, Mandarin.
But when U-S President Clinton makes his visit here, he, like other foreign visitors can listen through a simultaneous English translation service.
Clinton has pledged to press Beijing authorities to show greater religious tolerance.
But many Beijing residents say religious persecution is becoming a thing of the past, and Chinese are flocking to churches around the country in droves.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I think the ministers in the (United) States would be jumping for joy if they had turnouts like this. It's amazing, it seems to me that in the churches -- there aren't a lot of them -- but they all seem to be filled to overflowing.
SUPER CAPTION: Vox-pop, American man, member of congregation
Each week at the Chongwenmen service, overflow crowds spill onto the grounds outside the church, or watch a television feed of the service in the cramped basement.
With 14 (m) million worshippers, China's faithful say Christianity is experiencing a mass revival.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
Especially young students and older intellectuals -- they've noticed that Christianity plays an important role in Western culture. So they are interested in Christianity and want to know exactly what it is. Of course, we acknowledge that Christianity has its own power. That's the decisive factor.
SUPER CAPTION: Reverend Wu Wei, Pastor of the Beijing Chongwenmen Church
Worshippers say part of the attraction of Christianity is the music and hymns which accompany the services.
But whatever their reasons for joining the church, Chinese worshippers are quick to point out that Christianity is not restricted by borders.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
Jesus doesn't belong only to the West. Jesus' innate gifts created the whole universe. We are all, and this includes Clinton, Christian brothers and sisters.
SUPER CAPTION: Vox-pop, old Chinese woman
The poor along with the new, more affluent middle-class gather side by side at Chongwenmen and other Christian sanctuaries.
Some say that gives the impression that religion is completely free in China.

British consular official in Hong Kong disappears while on trip to mainland China
홍콩 언론 영국 총영사관 직원, 중국서 돌아오다 실종
With tensions rising between mainland China and Hong Kong over the pro-democracy protests on the island,... a new twist in the story has emerged.
A British government worker in Hong Kong has gone missing during a trip to China.
For more on this and other news around the world, let's turn to our Kim Da-mi.
So Dami, tell us more.
Mark, the man in question is Simon Cheng, a 28-year-old trade and investment officer at the UK consulate in Hong Kong.
He was returning from a trip to Shenzhen in China on August 8th,...when his girlfriend lost contact with him.
She told a Hong Kong news website that the territory's immigration service informed her that Cheng had been placed under administrative detention in China in an unknown location and for unknown reasons.
The UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office is now seeking further information from authorities in Guangdong Province and Hong Kong.
China's foreign ministry claims it knows nothing about the situation.
Under administrative detention in China, Cheng can be held up for up to 15 days without charge.
According to his girlfriend, he has not participated in any of the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.
Meanwhile, the U.S. has made a firm stance on the China-Hong Kong dispute,...bringing up the potential for it to affect a possible U.S. trade deal with China.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told CNBC on Tuesday that it would be more difficult to reach a trade deal if the protests end in a violent way.
Pressed on what level of violence that might mean, he noted that President Trump said something like Tiananmen Square.
